firstly i need to bump this just cause it looks so freaking awesome and secondly i am really considering doing this now that i have seen it, screw the dominators, this is totally the way forward but i was wondering what you did with all the wiring that was behind the headlight? is there space that you can hide it in the back of the headlight like the 500e or is the F wired diff so you dont need to worry about that?

Danny500

Just tape it all up and cram it behind the headlight... fits like a glove.

Bumping this thread because a)I'm new to the board and this thread was the reason I found this site in the first place and b)I wonder if anyone has tried this with a GS500F 2009 or newer?

I recently dropped my beautiful, completely scratchless 09 F.  The top and right fairings are completely junked but all lights are intact.  I've toyed with getting this bike naked for a while so necessity has become the mother of invention and I am going to take on this project.

I've ordered the parts listed in the OP and they haven't arrived yet so I haven't removed the fairings.  However, in looking at the bike I noticed a couple of things that are different from the project in the OP and wondered if anyone had any thoughts/advice.

1. There seems to be a new piece of frame added since 2006 that sits right behind the headlight.  It doesn't appear that the headlight is mounted on it right now but shouldn't be too hard to mount the light on.  It does stick out about an additional four inches from the fork so the headlight would stick out a bit.  Anyone mounted a light on this?

2. In the OP pic, it looks like the wiring to the turn signals was insulated.  Was that standard?  My bike's turn signal wires are naked with no insulation and I assume I should buy something to protect that wiring without the fairing.  Any suggestions?

Awesome forum, by the way, and I am happy to have found such a great resource.

Thanks.

I did this mod a few weeks ago to my 09 F as well, I can try answer your questions.

1. That piece of Y-frame that comes up under the front fairings? If so then yes you can do it but it would look hideous, sticks out way too far. (I have some pics with the frame there (w/o headlight) but i remember holding the headlight in place to see and it looked FUGLY).

2. I went to a local electronics store and bought some heatshrink for $8, that did the job perfectly, then tuck it through the frame and zip tie it in with all the other wires.

1. Yes, I think we are talking about the same thing.  Does that Y frame come off easily?  I do think it would look bizarre to have the light on it.

2. Sweet, I will do that.

Thanks for the quick reply.

1. Yes, 2 Bolts. As for the fairings attached to the Y frame... well they are a pain in the ass. Lol, lots of little pop screws.

Just a noteworthy mention, I purchased 8mm Diameter heatshrink without measuring anything thinking it would be cool...  When I got around to using it I wished i had something more like a 12mm to fit the connections into too (not just the wires). It looks good though so I'm not bothered to drop another 8$
