Hey,

Thanks for going through such a great explanation on this. At first I was really wanting to do it but I'm not sure how much I like them being up that high. Do you think they would be able to go down lower and still have visability. I want a pair of mirrors that have the signals built in but the gixxer one's make them look even more like a bug's antennea!

Thanks,

Mate you could probably mount them a little lower on the fairing, but your problem will be seeing past your arm, thanks to the GS's very high handlebars.

I fitted some 2003 gsxr indicators to the front of the bike (just used the stock gsxr backing plate on the inside of the fairing and screwed it down tight.

Doesn't look too bad. So there's another option for those considering what to do.

Next I'll be fitting these to the rear 9and hopefully there they will stay.

more pics soon.

I got myself another pair of rear 2004 GSXR turn signals, which I'll use temporarily as front turn signals. It's going to be much better than damn flush mounts which look sweet but aren't visible...
I'll try to shorten the stalks a little bit so they will be closer to the fairings.

PS. galahs you'll be glad you went with GSXR signals as your rear turn signals  :thumb: trust me on that one  ;)

Sure am mate they look awesome.

If I wasn't going to use the gsxr mirrors with the indicators I would have used them for the front too. They have such a bright crystal looking amber lens, they look sleek with their sharp styling and best of all, are dam well visible when operating.

I have also purchased some Clear Alternative lens' to try out on the gsxr rear indicators, but I don't think I'll end up using them. I actually really like the stock lens.

But I'll put them on and take some photos. A touch of community service to help out the GS community make up their minds.  :thumb:

looks GOOD to me  :thumb:

those fat stockers look soooo ugly in comparison to GSXR's signals  ;)

Ok my Clear Alternative CTS-0027 2003-2005 GSXR clear lens arrived, thankfully with 18W orange bulbs (I got told by clear alternatives that they would ship with 5W bulbs  :cookoo: )

5W bulbs just doesn't cut it IMO!!!

I was quite prepared to by some amber glass paint and paint my stock clear bulbs. But thankfully I don't have to.

Here's some pics.

Here's the location of the holes I drilled for the GSXR mirrors with the integrated turn signals.

As you can see, the two mounting screws require 11mm holes and a 7mm hole is needed to pass through the turn signal wiring.

great idea, btw for the OEm holes you could just a get a mirror block off plate (sv650 are identical measure as GS500 I beleive,  and not have that "hex bolt" look to it.

Otherwize looks very inetresting.... well maybe when I get more cash flow.

I have these on my 2007 and they are very bright.  The only way someone behind me wouldn't see them is if they just weren't looking.

I ended up putting Philips Silvervision Globes in to get rid of the orange, fried egg look.

looks great. so how do you like them after all??
do they provide good visibility??
do they vibrate?

cheers

Visibility is great but the stck gs500 mirrors are better as they stick out further. With the new mirrors you have to tuck your arms in a little to see directly behind you.

They do vibrate a touch more than the stock mirrors at freeway speeds but are still very functional in both day and night riding. The vibration isn't excessive and you can still clearly see whats behind you. It is imperative you wedge some thick rubber or wood in behind the mirrors screws and the frame to achieve a good result.

Its a great mod, but I wont lie and say they havn't slightly reduced the functionality of the mirrors compared to the GS's superb stock mirrors.

kml.krk

great description - thanks!
I think then, that I'll stick with stock mirrors for now, even though the gsxr mirrors look fantastic and they have turn signals built-in.
thanks again for sharing!

Yep they do look great but yes the stockers are functionally better on this bike.

Though I don't want to give the wrong impression, these new GSXR mirrors are as good as many OEM sports mirrors on Supersports bikes. Its just that the stock GS500F mirrors are one of the functionally better mirrors out there.

This is what I did before I had my GSXR rear indicators

Fenderectomy and Relocate the Stock indicators Instructions with Pictures!

Step 1
Remove the seat and everything under it (toolkit etc) and disconnect the indicator wires.
You will need to cut the cable ties holding the wires if they are still there.

Step 2
Remove the rear fender. Undo the:
- two screws at the rear of the fender (note the bracket that holds the tool kit elastic band will come loose)
- two 10mm bolts in the centre of the fender (they have self aligning washers)
- 1 screw at the front of the fender

Drop the fender down, gently pull out the Indicator wires with it.
The take the fender away to work on it.

Step 3
Remove the number plate, number plate bracket and stock rear reflector.
Unscrew the indicators (17mm spanner) from the fender.
With a hacksaw blade cut the fender straight through using the bottom of the tool box recess as a guide.

Smooth the edge with some fine grade sandpaper.

Optional Step 4
I left some of the rear panel so if I ever want to attach the stock rear reflector I can. You don't have to.

Step 5
Take the large washer used on the inside of the indicator assembly.
Push it into the bottom, back corner of the toolbox impression of the fender.
Drill a hole in the centre of the washer the same size as the washer opening

Repeat this on the other side.

Step 6
Re-attatch the Indicators into the holes you just drilled.
Use the washers. The external plastic washer has a recess so the indicator fits into it flush. Make sure you line it up.
If you use the internal washer (recommended to stiffen the fixture) the bolt wont have much thread for the nut to grab, so tighten as much as possible. I used some locktite to make sure it stays. Make sure your blinkers are oriented evenly/correctly.

Re-attach the fender.

I recommend using 2 or 3 washers on the 2 rear screws to give some extra clearance so the indicators arn't jammed into the bike as this pushes them down making them look "droopey". Position the washers above the "tool kit elastic band bracket"

Re connect the indicators wires

Put back the tool kit etc.

Put back your seat.

Step 7
Now place your number plate on the back of your fender, mark the screw points. Hopefully like the Aussie plates they fit on the plastic, otherwise you will need to make/use a bracket.)
Drill the holes
Mount the plates using the stock screw and bolts.

I then went and got some small red reflectors for the rear to keep me legal and safe!

ENJOY!!!
Better aerodynamics than stock, less weight and better looks! Win win win!

First things first...

Galahs,
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE HARD WORK ON THE MIRRORS!!  That info is priceless!

Thanks much to kml.krk too.  I wasn't sure if that style of flush mount was any better than the rest, so thanks for confirming it for me before I spent any $$!

Second,
What is the most recommended / preferred front turn signal alternative (not including the mirrors)?  I've been doing a lot of reading (including a lot of reading on GSTwins.com), but I haven't really felt "sold" on any particular style.  My biggest priority is practicality to make sure that oncoming traffic can still see me, short of having to stay with these gargantuan, freak of nature stalks that come OEM.

I'm open to any and all thoughts....

Mate I was the same way inclined as you.

Hated the stock indicators, but wanted flushmount lindicators that are still easy enough for cagers to see. In the end I couldn't find any I was really sold on so I went the mirror option.

But mate something like this would be more visible than some:

or this

type of design would be more visible than some of the flusher designs.

Check out ebay. There is a multitude of designs  :thumb:
