So it sounds like your park lamp is the problem. Are you certain you have a park lamp?

What year/country is your bike?  Older US models did not have a park lamp in the headlight assembly though it had a park position on the keyswitch.

More details please. With this we can point you to the correct information.

But in the event you are certain you have a lamp, here is a scan to from the OEM manual listing lamps (89 - 2000)...CLICK HERE

In the 2001/02 models the exceptions are E-03, 24, 28, 33 markets. The lamp is the same otherwise but called a "Position light".

In 2003, the exceptions are P-24, 28, same wattage and name.

In 2004, there were two wattages depending on your market. GS500/U have the same lamp as previous models. GS500F/FU  (I didn't make that up  ;) ) have 12 V/5 W.

In 2005 the OEM manual shows the same except the GS500/U is excepted for P-03, 24, 28, 33 markets.

So it could be that you have read three different values because it depends on the year and market the bike was sold for.

And to answer the eventual question of "What are E and P markets?"

Grawl (bike name-heheh) is  a 2006 gs5f.
I ordered the after market manual but I still haven't received it. Guess am going to have to call those guys and find out where my book is at.
I also read to check the connections with a meter, Ill do that shortly got to purchase one today and find out ASAP. As to "how to" use it correctly guess ill figure that out as far as settings go. heheheh

Thanks.

P.S. This is my first bike since 10 yrs ago; I stopped riding because I was young and stupid. So am really McLOVIN this bike apposed to a 650-800cc bikes. Suzuki sport bikes have always been #1 in my book.

Thanks

ok so now i checked the front light with the voltage meter and it took a cleaning and 2 bulbs to get the front to work but the rear light still will not work. hmh just not sure what else to look for. The info on the light wattage issue helped alot thank you. i just gotta figure out whats going on with the back side now.
this site sure is awsome.

Thanks again

You didn't mention the rear light before. What light are you referring to?

I made a simplified schematic of the GS wiring (pre 2003) that may help.
CLICK HERE  This is for lighting only.

I have a different one for the brake lighting.
CKICK HERE

We have several threads on using a meter for specific purposes, but none that I recall for just the lighting. Always remember the frame should be the negative side of the battery. The battery attaches to the frame via a cable bolted to the motor - yep not directly to the frame.

The wiring harness has the negative battery connection through a smaller wire that has a plastic connector leading into the harness.

yeah sorry i thought i mentioned the rear light. hehehh
so now its just the rear park light that will not work.
ignition in the on and park position not working (just the rear light) all else works

thanks much friend. ill let you know if that helps me out asap. I love riding so want to get this issue fixed.

The rear tail light is the rear Park/Position light on the GS.

The Park/Position switch circuit sends +12 VDC out a Brown wire to the tail light and the position light (in the headlight assembly).

You might be done and ready to ride.

Your tail bulbs are dual filaments. One for On, Park/Position, the other for the brakes. There are two bulbs also.

The turn signals only function as turn signals, nothing else. If someone has added some lights to your bike then...I would have no clue as to how they are wired.

but all is good aye. thats a noobie for ya heh

Thanks for your help.

Hello DLW! John Bates holds his own quite well electrically also but I thinks he rides his Harley now and may not even have a GS anymore.  He hasn't been here for a while.

I am happy to point people to the complete schematic when it seems they will not be overwhelmed with it. I have been tinkering with an online interactive schematic but haven't had the time to fool with it in a while. My workload has me way overbooked through the summer.
