Welcome, Randi!  I love to see
Posts: 1[/list:u]To me it says, "We got another one"!

Enjoy the stuffing out of your '89 - and keep posting.  If you have questions, we (usually) have answers.

    Or at least opinions!   :thumb:

    WreckZ

I'm WreckZ... AKA Ronn.  Known for tossing my bike (always unintentionally) and testing riding gear, I've been riding on and off for about 12 years.  In all actuality, I'm a Cager at heart, but in the last two years, my love for bikes has really grown.
I am a 'full time' Air Force reservist.  I did 10 years active duty, then jumped out to do the SAME THING as a civilian.
I live in SoCal (southern California) and primarily ride a Kawasaki ZRX1200.
I'm 6' 2", and about 250 lbs.  (yup, that's ALOTTA weight for this poor bike to haul)
But, I will be using it as a track bike/custom show piece for my mechanical talents, which are totally new to bikes!
You'll often find me hangin' around with LilBrat (on here, I think she's MistressBrat, or some such connotation)
Pleasure to meet you all, and hope to ride with you someday!
    >>>ME<<<
    Crash! Club! (Crashing not Required!)
I'm just the mechanic/modder.  I'm not responsible for the outcome.

    pantablo

Randi and Ronn, WELCOME! Good to see more local SoCal riders here. I'm in Santa Monica and regularly get together with people to ride the various curvy roads round these parts...

Lots of good people and info here. Check out the links onthe home page here  and on my page as well...lots of info there.

    Enjoy!

    Hey, Im Dave.
Im a 24yr old Computer Programmer living in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
I've been riding for 5 years, and Ive been married for about 1 1/2 years to a beautiful girl who wants to learn to ride.

So, I am about to get my 3rd GS500e, her first.

Now, I'll be able to ride my SV650 without her on the back - just behind me!

    Here's what I've owned:

    93 GS500
    95 GS500
    98 Intruder 800
    99 SV650

    Hi all, I'm Todd.

Gonna be turning 25 this month (January), currently a student down here in Winter Park Florida (Orlando, sorta). I've got an associate of Comp Sci, trying to get a Bachelor, but Trig/Calc is owning me something fierce. It'd help, I think, if the Teacher knew Trig/Calc...

Anyway, I used to live up in Michigan. Worked on the PS/2 / X-Box game Alter Echo (I'm in the credits, yes I am! Er... ok, so it's as QA... sue me). I was supposed to get a job at the company on the next project as a programmer, but they closed down. Major suckage there.

So now I'm back at school. Single, quite the looker. Yep. No pics, so you all will just have to believe me on that  :thumb:

Never had a street bike myself, although I've owned a few dirtbikes and a few small roadbikes that I never got plates for. I'm hoping to pick up a GS500 for a first bike for commuting and such. I've always wanted a bike, but haven't yet been able to get one. That'll change this year, it's one of my resolutions. That, and to graduate and get a job.

Am always in the market for good deals and can usually come up with ridiculous amounts of cash in short amounts of time...

Hello, my name is Nick and I'm a 25 y.o. from Sacramento, CA.   I'm a long time reader of the site, but just recently (and finally!) picked up a 1998 GS500.  First bike for me.  This site is fantastic - it's the resource of this community that made me pick the GS500.  See you on the forums.

    joefromsf

Joe from San Francisco here. 47 year old motorcycle, rock climbing and whitewater rafting enthusiast. And a software engineer during the day.

I am currently using the EX500 as my daily bike. The GS500 is for my wife Sherry and I am currently performing a serious overhaul of it. When I'm done I will give her the choice of which bike she wants and then I will sell the other and probably buy a Suzuki V-Strom 650 for myself.

The GS500 was purchased in late 2001 for $1200. It had 23000 miles, was dirty, had a few minor scrapes and a small oil leak.

Work done after I bought it:
    - decent washing and oil change
    - replaced right side engine cover gasket to fix oil leak
    - overtightened and sheared one bolt in side cover (did not remove)
    - stock exhast can fell off, replaced with Cobra F1 slip on
    - replaced tires with Bridgestones

Work I have done over last several weeks:
    - replaced pilot and main jets, cleaned carbs and replaced all rubber bits in carbs
    - adjusted valves
    - extracted broken bolt in side cover (also bought good torque wrench)
    - dismantled, inspected, cleaned and lubed about 3/4 of the bike
    - replaced various worn bits and missing bolts/screws
    - bought Progressive fork spings and Katana 600 rear shock on ebay
    - replaced fuel lines
    - replaced brake pads

    Still to do:
    - install new suspension components
    - inspect and clean front end
    - put bike back together

If the bike runs and handles as good I think it will when I'm done, then I'm pretty sure Sherry will want it over the EX500. If that is the case then I will also offer to paint the bodywork. There are quite a number of scratches and black is boring.

BTW, this site rocks as a resource for the GS500. But you all knew that.  :thumb:

I'm David..  no fancy nickname, sorry.  27 years old from Columbus, Ohio.  New GS500e owner; just bought mine this past fall.  1999, yellow, with about 8,000 miles on it.  It's my second running bike, fourth bike I've owned.  I've had:

1972 Honda CB175 - cool bike, free "back of the garage" find, never could get it to run reliably enough to ride.
1967 Suzuki B100p - 2-stroke, cute, parts not available.  Bought for $200, sold for $175, decided to get something newer that ran.
1987 Yamaha Virago 535 - did this one right.  Took the MSF class, bought a bike that looked great and was claimed to run well, $1200.  It didn't.  Took it to a shop, told them "Just fix it - I want to ride!"  $500 later and I got about a hundred miles out of it before it was crap again.  Took it to a friend.  $400 later and I got a few hundred more miles out of it.  Broke again.  Viragos are crap.  Sold it for $750.
1999 Suzuki GS500E - awesome bike!!  It starts every time and kicks the crap out of riding that Yamaha even when it ran well!  Put more miles on it in a month of riding than a year with the Virago.  Love it and plan to ride it a ton this year.

I work in commercial real estate, managing a multi-tenant office building.  (Accounting, legal, administrative stuff..)  I have an old farm house I fix and live in..  I'm married and feeling old.  My toys keep me young.. unless they're stressing me out.

Hey the 535 is the most ridiculously simple bike in the world... its also the easiest bike for a beginer (sorry GS dudes... the GS doesn't even make 5th on that list). The problem with the 535 was probably the moron that was working on it. I have had 2 535's (Only the nighthawks 3 running + 2 parts, GS'es 3 running + 1 frame out number it in my past and I never had 2 of those at the same time unlike my GS'es) and both 535'shave just been rock reliable. It doen't have the problems of the other virago's, doesn't rust like the GS tends to, and everything in that bike is external, jets, valves, starter, alternator etc etc... The one design flaw was... its regulator is too close to the muffler collector. But neither of mine burnt up... but in theory it can. The GS doesn't even come close.... of course the GS is faster, handles a whole lot better at high speeds, carries enough gas to actually make work and back wihtout a fill up and has that beautiful blaht blaht blaht noise with a pipe... If you still have it I'll bet I can make you 535 sing like the fat lady again...
    Cool.
