33 Year old in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Sydney.
I've only just recently gotten my license. This month, I get my unrestricted license!

The 2001 GS500 is my first bike, and I reckon is the best choice to introduce biking.
Its done several of the spurs (tight roads around the mountains outside of Melb). Its done the Great Ocean Rd. I've ridden it the 1000klms from Sydney to Melb (in 42c degree heat btw)
Before I sell up, I plan on taking it to a track just to see what I can do with it.

Cheers

Bruce

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Hey, I'm Scott from Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm 24, married, have an 8 month old. Haven't been riding very long.... just passed my MSF course and got my motorcycle license, actually, and I'll be going to the dealer for my 06 GS500 on Tuesday. Hoping to have a great time and learn a lot (and not die, that might help).

mike, living in seattle. took the msf course 6 months ago and bought an '89 gs500. paid too much for a bike that needs front and rear brake and suspension work, but at least the engine runs well! very useful info on this site; i've been lurking for a while.

Glad you realize that your riding habits will change.  It's funny how responsibility and duty to spend time with family have an effect on your riding habits.

I had a similar problem, mildly addressed by taking the GS500 along on family trips:

Ive been lurking on this site since I bought the bike. Already did the ignition advancer to the bike. Now I plan on hopefully doing a list of whats on this site

Hi gus,

I'm Paul. I live in Wellington, New Zealand. I ride a GS500 K1, which I use for all year round commuting and the occassional weekend blat.

This is my second GS. My first (97E) was written off when I was hit by a car. Fortunately apart from two broken hands I was ok, and got enough insurance money back to purchase my K1.

I've been riding for 30 years now, so I've lost the urge to have the fastest and newest (mostly) and the GS suits me well. My GS has a Givi A755 screen, Hagon replacement rear shock, and i'm running BT45s.

It's good to see so many other riders who are so keen on the mighty GS500.
