Hi Everyone,

I'm Leo, 23, from Victoria, BC, Canada.  Finished my computer engineering undergrad last year and now working on my masters in the area of developing software for those with disabilities (one of my volunteers is a Scot with a brain injury from crashing his bike, makes ya think!).

Got into motorcycling this spring, when a friend of mine had to leave town and left his '83 GS400 in my care for a few months.  I passed my skills test on that, and rode it for a couple months.  When he took his bike back, another friend lent me his (an '03 KTM LC4, beautiful bike) because he didn't have time to ride it much so insuring it himself wasn't worth the money.  Had lots of fun on that, all the while keeping an eye out for bikes to buy.  Well finally I found an '89 GS500 in pretty good condition for only $1200CAN and have been riding that since.   It runs pretty nicely, but I'm eager to learn about fixing it for the inevitable things that will go wrong.   Up next is valve clearance check, fuel filter installation, clutch adjustment, carb cleaning, float adjustment, and some paint touchups.

Leo,

Thanks for rescuing an example of the first-year issue of the GS500.  You'll find there are a lot of after-market accessories for it.  Get yourself a Clymer manual for it -- less than CDN$30 from Chapters.

Wander around this site -- use Search to ferret out what you're looking.  Enjoy the site.   :)

Thanks RedShift.  I love that bike.  Plenty enough power for me.  The guy I bought it from actually gave me a Clymer manual along with it.  Obviously he never used it, because there were some pretty basic things that should have been done on the bike when I got it.  I don't have a clue about fixing bikes, but it's lots of fun to learn.  I've been leafing through this site trying to understand some of the quirks of the bike.  It likes to stall at lights after riding for a while, and the left float height is 3mm high, so I'm gonna take the carbs apart and try to fix that.  Lots of great info on this site.  Thanks to everyone that posted pictures and instructions!

My name is Peter,
Ime going to get myself a gs 500 e  this weekend in Rio the Janeiro,. anyway its not my first, my last one was the SV 1000 N, excellent bike sorry I could not take it to Brasil because of custom/import restrictions. actually the 500 is pretty light for me after the SV with 124 Hp and a faser 600 with 100 Hp Ime curiuos how this one will handle.
I have not much interest in speed, but I love the curves, and ocasionally touching ground, fortunately we have lots of curves here  ( i live in Salvador de Bahia Brasil )
My car is a V6 suzuki vitara ( marvelous engine ) my first Bike was a Suzuki GT 550 two stroke, then a Kawasaki 750 twin, a Yamaha 500 twin, a Suzuki 450 twin a Yamaha 900.
I made a long trip to Greece, and my last long trip was from Chicago to Mexico city fantastic trip one big adventure,..
anyway Ime happy as a child looking forward to give the GS 500 a spinn.

greetings to all from Brasil

Peter

Welcome Alan.

Your story shows a couple that are well traveled, motorcycle-wise.  Glad your significant other has chosen the GS500 -- quite a polite and pleasant "around town" ride.

Please browse the postings via the Search tool.  Lots of useful information here.  Enjoy...

Hi all,

My name is Mark, 30 yrs old and proud owner of a '89 GS500E. After years of riding 2strokes, i'm trying my luck on a 4stroke to get me to work and back. ;) It needs some TLC, but she'll turn out just fine (although she looks like s**t).
It's quite a step from a yamaha RD500 to the GS5 but comfort and reliabilty are getting more and more important for me. Changing plugs and filling up 2T oil isn't much fun at 6 am :icon_confused:
Your site really convinced me to buy the bike and i hope to enjoy my GS5 for many years.
I can't help it. I'm lazy by nature..

I'm 30, female, and live in the Greater Vancouver area of western Canada - >10mi from the US border. I was born and raised here. I play ice hockey in my free time and I have a pretty good job and good friends.

I just purchased a 2007 GS500E. I bought the naked version because I found the F version of the bike to be a bit large looking - plus I love the European/Streetfighter style of bikes. I got my bike new because I am not mechanically inclined by nature, so I think I will learn as I go - for safety reasons.

My brother and I got our bike licenses last month and already I have put 1000km's on my bike in less than a month. I am loving it so far and look forward to seeing how I can mod my bike a bit to make it a fierce machine! haha

Hello all!  My name's Matt, I was born, but not raised here in San Diego, but I've been back since graduating highschool trying to pursue an engineering degree.  I found out about this forum through a coworker, who also introduced me to the GS500.  I've been riding a CBR600F4 and CBR600F4i for the last 4 years, but recently picked up a 96 GS500.  With a little work it'll become a keeper, to be used for commuting and random hooliganism.  I'd recently been bitten by the streetfighter bug, so that's the direction my new bike is headed in.  I hope to find out a lot of good information here and look forward to meeting some of you.

Hey 20 year old male from Staten Island, New York.  I am processing for the NYPD right now.  Bought a 2001 GS500 for my first bike although I was clearly sold a P.O.S.  I'm rebuilding the bike now and will hopefully get all it's major kinks out before the end of the season.  But when it does want to run.....what a sweet ride!

Hello everyone, Eric 34 year old married, father of one in Moscow, Idaho

Recently purchased a 2007 GS500F and have put about 750 miles on it so far.

I have been riding on and off for 20 years, but I haven't owned a bike since I totaled mine over a decade ago when a police officer pulled out in front of me in a classic left turn scenario.

I have been reading this board for several weeks now, and I have to say I have enjoyed what I have read and hope I can contribute in the future.

Hi Everyone.  I'm a 24 year old male living in Nevada.  I just picked up a '91 GS500e from a buddy who used it as his starter bike (now prefers his wife's Shadow).  I've been looking over this website daily for about a month now, and glad to be a new part of the community!
