Some of you might know that my bike had goat's and needed a rotor, starter clutch assembly replacement. It is back to normal now. The strange 'clunking' noise from the left side of the crank case is also gone. It sounds sweet now. I just want to make sure that the rehab process goes on smoothly now.

I was going through a lot of past posts on bikes which had goat's and realized that a frequent oil and filter replacement is recommended. On my bike, the goat's wasn't severe and the magnets were all intact, just that 50% epoxy was not be seen.  I do understand that the epoxy should be hiding in the oil strainer. Do you think it is necessary to remove the strainer and clear the garbage or is it just sufficient if I do a 150 mi oil and filter replacement for the next 300 miles. BTW, when i drained the oil, I did not see any epoxy pieces. It was normal used dark black oil. Also, the filter had one of the fins damaged.  :icon_rolleyes: I hope that is hiding in the strainer too. I can post a picture if needed.

What do you think? Oil pressure is fine, there are no issues with it. I am asking this because it is a pain in the ass to reach those strainer bolts and get that off. Sigh! also needs the exhaust removed.

here is the picture of the filter that was sitting in my engine when it had goat's on it. Is that a problem?  :dunno_white:

In addition to oil changes every 100 miles for the first 1000 or so miles, I also take off the pan a few times and clean the filter screen.
You can use the same gasket a few times, cos you dont care if it leaks a little ... a little is OK, not enough to dump it all out in 10 mins ...
Cool.

I hope you are kidding about the "oil changes every 100 miles for the first 1000 or so miles". I just thought I could get away doing it a couple of times at 100 mile intervals
Will also try the pan off. Was trying to avoid it, but looks like i will have to do it

Is that oil filter normal? the Buddha thinks it is fine?  :dunno_white: I thought it is a pretty bad thing. That means the impure oil would be circulating all around the engine right?

The Buddha

Well that filter is OK, the outside is always dirtier, inside it is the cleaner side.
I think I did oil change 6 times in the first 1000 ... see, first 25 miles (1 very gentle ride) then after 50 miles, then 100, then 200, then 400 and then 800.
Pan off and get all the magnetic and lacquer bits out. Very vital.
Cool.

The good thing is that you can use a cheap mineral oil (it this, what it's called).

No need to buy any fancy stuff.

The Buddha

Ooooo you can use transmission oil ... what kind ... dunno, there is a kind of transmission oil that is actually high detergent motor oil. Maybe like ATF ... except like make sure you dont use the crap that has the grit in it. However I used the 10W40 I normally use, the cheapo walmart kind. I use it cos its the best.
Cool.

lamoun and Buddha: I am currently using the 5quarts for 10 bucks castrol gtx 10W40 oil from walmart. I plan on using it during the rehab process. I am not planning on taking any vague chances with "high detergent motor oil".

and Buddha did you say "first few miles of gentle riding"  :icon_rolleyes: Heck! I raced it on the freeway already for 25 miles. shaZam!!

The Buddha

Dude, higher oil flow bypasses your oil filter ... definetly something you dont want.
In fact on my first 25 mile ride I believe I may have not crossed 5K. Stay under 5-6K, you definetly dont want to race it.
Cool.

Buddha: was wondering how many more miles you put on your GS before it's death after goat's? Just curious.

Can someone tell me WTF GOATS are, seriously....
Have you learned the lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you? Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed passage with you?

Astroaru:I run 8K more I believe, maybe a bit less, but it never died, It ran and ran and ran untill the day I sold it and delivered it to the guy on a freezing cold winter day 50 miles away. I rode it all the way and it ran great. 2 months later I saw him riding it without even changing a damn thing on it, Not even the primered and dinged up tank. Hope it made it and not have the clown ignore it to its death.
Fry: The alternator rotor comming in contact with the stator coil is called goats. You can get it by crashing (like se7enty7 did), by ignoring the starter clutch going clunk clunk and the vibrations ruin the rotor (like I did), by having the starter get carried by the motor cos the clutch is locked and its fragmenting throws crap into the path of the rotor (like starwalt's bike), or for apparently no reason at all like Goat did. Goat was the first user to get this and the rest of us all got it almost right after, proving that goats is the most communicable disease on the internet. There is prolly 2-3 more variations. Atleast.
Mine atleast was an easy fix once I diagnosed it, and se7enty7 also didn't have any issues fixing his.
Cool.

Initially I was stumped by these terminology as well. It took me some time to assimilate the meaning of goats, stalwarts, etc, etc.
