it seams to start, run, idel, shift, eccelarate, and shut off just fine

A loose valve tappet ticks at a high frequency but the infamous camshaft sideplay knock is more a heavy thud compared to a tappet tick and occurs at a much lower frequency.

Knocks only at idle, only when hot, and goes away if you pick up the idle speed to 1500-2000 rpm while sitting there in neutral.  No need to complicate it with wind noise.

If it is the camshaft sideplay knock it can be eliminated by camshaft shimming but is harmless if left as is.  Heard it off and on  with my 97 GS that I put 80k miles on and I heard it early on with my 02 GS but haven't heard it for a long time now with 63k+ miles on it now.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.
