I need a muffler for under $150 to as a temporary fix. In order to help My GS breath its getting a new intake (lunchbox, $35) and an exhaust but I don't have $300 for a yosh so help me pick between what I have found until I have the extra bank to give my GS what it wants. Thanks a lot guys!!!

There are some really short style reverse-cone mufflers on JC whitney... they look like the old Dunstall sytle ones on Triumphs. I had 2 on my old Honda CM200T and they were FRIGGEN AWESOME sounding...

I can only imagine they would sound even better on a GS. If you have to just cut off the old can and install a slip on, go with one of those... It'll be loud... but if it's TOO loud you can get extra packing for about 15 bucks at a dirtbike shop and quiet it down to a whisper.

Especially if this is a "temporary" fix, you don't wanna throw more than 100 at it.

You could just drill holes in your stock can... That's what a PO did to my bike when they put a lunchbox on it and everything runs just fine...

Thanks Danny500 for the suggestions. I'm probably get a supertrapp due to the "tuning" ability. To craftierod, $369 is waaay too much for me to justify spending on a muffler. What does a $400 muffler do. Unless it cooks me dinner or pays bills, I'm not sure its needed. If someone could list a couple benefits I'd be interested. To KML.KRK, Jets are in process of being upgraded. I wouldn't dare upgrade intake/exhaust without rejetting. Thanks ChargerCalvin for the suggestion, I'd post but I need it sooner rather than later. Most exhaust mods don't merit a jet adjustment. Especially if you're keeping the stock head pipes and just slapping on a slip-on. As long as you don't touch the air-box.

Once you start digging into the air system is when you definitely want to have a jet kit or the 'proper' sizes for your mods on-hand.

That supertrap is pretty expensive, but if you're for "tuneability" it can't be beat. Are you thinking a stock-location mount or shortening it up to a GP style? You could probably lob-off everything within a few inches of the Y collector and get away with enough room to mount it.

Where did you get a glasspack from. Any chance there's a link to go to? I'm curious about the construction. I found one with a 1-3/4" inlet / outlet with two wrapped 1-3/4" baffles and a 3" shell.  I need something that will not be too loud and not too restrictive. "Too loud" is when your neighbors have a cow if you pull in after midnight.  damn neighbors! Your a cool roomate to be giving away a bike. Got my bags packed, I'm movin in. Let me know how the glass pack works out. I'm very interested. If anybody has some extra #3 washers I could really use some. I went to three stores and nobody had any. They all had #4-#12. I even went to a store called Tacoma screw! They had a #3 machine screw. Thats like not finding pet food at Pet Smart. I got 4 of the smallest washers that fit the #3 screw but I have no way to measure the thickness.

back pressure maybe ?

you'll want to do a few plug chops to make sure you're not slowly killing your engine. the only real gain for changing pipes on the gs is to make it louder. not like you're going to see a huge torque increase.

if you really want a nice help in the lower end of the rpm range, try an ignition advancer and a 15t front sprocket.

but my curretn pipe is litterally ripping itself apart...

i'll post pics of that later lulz

im going to do a dyno run today then change the pipe and tune the jets to make sure it's all good then i'll dyno lateron also

Starshooter: I checked Lowes, Home Depot, and the previously mentioned Tacoma Screw. No luck, so if someone has a few extras, I'll paypal you $1 for shipping if you want. What's your current pipe?
Ohgood: I know getting rid of my back pressure will reduce my bottom end torque but I will compensate later with 15 tooth front. The main purpose of changing pipes on any vehicle as well as changing intake on any vehicle is to help the motor breathe. More fuel/air is more power. The GS is choking from the factory.

and i was running a stock pipe with 8 3/4 inch holes drilled in the rear of the pipe (around the outlet pipe)

and im not going to be putting a glasspack on...

this bike is out of commision for a while...

I understand how mufflers work in general but what are the GS mufflers contructed like? Are there deflection plates? Is it similiar to a staight through? I'm trying to determine if I should keep the exhaust and what the best method of modifying is, not just blindly drill holes in the muffler.

i don't know why you'll need a new exhaust really. the lunchbox just gives it a neat intake tone, and is re-usable. you'll want to re-jet with it. the exhaust is just 'bling' or whatever people are calling unneeded items now.

will you gain 15 hp ? nope. torque ? nope.

switch to a 15 tooth front sprocket and feel the difference immediately !
