I see there is what appears to be three allen wrench screws holding the silver protector things that are right behind the foot pegs. But I can't get them to turn to save my life. It is counter clockwise right? Which size allen wrench is it. I have a set but one seems a wee bit too big and the other a wee bit too small. I hope they are not stripped.

Yes, counter clock wise.  And you need to use a metric allen wrench, not a standard one.  The right, "size" is the one that fits   :thumb:

Good luck, Bob!

Mary, Is that a heat guard?  I thought it was to stop you from kicking the rear brake reservoir!  And yes, counter-clockwise, and they're metric, like all the hardware on your bike.

I think that is what it is. If it were a brake reservoir would you need one on both sides?  I thought I saw it called that somewhere.

I just can't get the screws to move ARGH! These times I wish I were a guy with the big muscles and all!

If you need more torque just put a pipe on the end.  :D

The gaurd on your right is to keep you from kicking the brake res. and the one on the left is to "help" keeping you from running your foot through the chain and sproket, either way I'd leave them both unless you are gonna replace them with something else.

On my bikes it's a 4mm allen wrench or allen socket. If it's really stuck using and impact driver may help get them out easier.  Careful not to strip out head.

Blue locktite isn't so bad. Red is the one that will make you cry. I got my project GS for free because someone had used red locktite on the brake rotor bolts instead of blue. The previous owner broke three bolts and stripped two more before he gave me the bike. I used a mill to remove the old bolts and helicoil the wheel...

As for removing bolts held in place with red loctite, a creme brulee torch can be used to heat up the bolt, which softens the loctite.

Yeah, assuming the bolt isn't too close to something you'd rather not heat up a lot... On the wheel I had, I was afraid of destroying the bearings, so I just milled the bolts out. Probably took about the same amount of time and the mill did all the work, not my arms...

if your using a regular set of allen wrenches find whatever size box endwrench that will fit the allen size your using and you can use the wrench to give you more leverage to brake them loose thats what i did when i took mine off.

Cool I'll try that in the morning. I'm wanting to do the carbon fiber look on them hoping it would be a simple little job that I could mainly do sitting down. Still under the weather and weak but wanted to do something to the bike! I have a carbon fiber sun burst yin/yang on the tank and the carbon fiber tank pad, carbon fiber gas lid cover. I really like how this stuff is coming out and just wanted to add a little too it.

Another quick  :icon_question:  How do you guys keep your keys from scratching up the bar? I took a piece of the CF vinyl and wraped it around to keep it scratch free. was also thinking if they made any clear that would help a lot too!

at my work the guys will weld a t handle to the offending broken bolt/etc. and the weld heat loosens it right up, then they will turn out w/ the T handle.   Seen some ungodly broken bolts/taps/etc.  turned right out this way.
Attack but have a back up plan

webBikeWorld did a review of some paint protection film which included a piece for the top triple just for the key scratch.  http://www.webbikeworld.com/Reviewed-motorcycle-products/SheerMask/
As for me, I took my key off the keyring, since my jacket has a handy key pocket on the sleeve.
