gonna get pics as soon as i figure out how to put them on here.  will update as i do stuff.   i have three kids so it will be a kinda slow build.

1989 suzuki gs 500 E

Plans are:  modify exhaust using a slip on muffler, rejet on the carb (probably stage 1), open filters (individual), hopefully rebuild the motor, custom body work, paint, decals, possibly looking into wider rear tire.  nothing big but a little wider (info would be helpful)

Wasn't trying to make fun of your bike, the pics just make it look like more of a project than I'd take on.  You can melt a zip tie with a lighter to mend that side cover.  The wiring looks a bit hacked, do the lights and all work ok?

-Jessie

yeah all lights work, motor runs gears change

Yeah, it looks a little rough, but it looks like a good project, especially if you say it already runs well. I love the duct tape on the exhaust. Make sure you post pictures as you go along.

Baltimore, what's the method for the ziptie on the broken fairing? Do you just soften it up and mash it on, or are you melting it in a spoon like crack and pouring it onto the split in the fairing?? I've never heard that one before. I'd like to pick up a plastic welder someday for stuff like that, but I haven't needed one yet, so I haven't gotten around to finding one.

ok let me explain the duct tape situation:

me and my buddy were messing with the bike.  bike was located in his lower living room.  i got kicked out of the house by my 7 yr old daughter and her friends at her bday party.  went next door to my buddys house.   we got the bike started and got it to run untouched for about a min.   after it cut off we realized there was no ventilation.  we hooked up some dryer hose to run the exhaust out the door to be what we call safe.  duct tape was holding dryer hose in place.

and thats how we roll!  hahaha :woohoo:

get a jet kit from buddha. i think its like 30 bucks. and buy what you can from bikebandit. theyre cheap, and personal if you have a problem, and you earn bandit bucks towards other purchases

For OEM Suzuki parts I've had good luck with www.cheapcycleparts.com  (though I don't care for their revamped website).

The zip tie/lighter thing is pretty much a redneck plastic welder kit.  On the back side of the part you just line up the zip tie with the crack and use the lighter to melt it into the crack.  You can use a soldering gun instead of a lighter but the melted plastic will ruin the tip for soldering.  Once that is done you just use some glazing putty on the front side to cover up the crack.

bike bandit is far from cheap.  either WWW.cheapcycleparts.com   or www.cyclepartsnation.com    i do like that you earn the bandit bucks but the is a site called www.ebates.com   you sign up for free (if i refer you and i get $5 after your first purchase) and link through them to do your normal shopping online.  earn cash back on alot of sites. i recommend it to everyone.  i have received cash back.

well i have a small update:  picked up a 96 gs500e for $100.  not a full bike but has frame, rims and tires, almost complete motor (tho he left it taken apart outside and got rain in it), wire harness, most of the controls, and some other parts just cant remember right now.  and got the title with it.  picked up alot of the parts mine was missing.  will be selling whatever i don't use.  im almost sure ill be getting rid of the frame with title if anyone is interested.  gonna post pics of it soon

Awesome find on the 96. Most of the inside of the motor could still be good, depends on how long it was out in the rain. It's a good excuse to pull apart the motor and see what you can find.

to answer about the plastic welding situation, the magazine "Project Car" did a write up about it awhile ago, if you wanted to read that. otherwise, just google "plastic welding" and some crazy links come up that can help out.
