i have 2002 gs500 - about 4 yrs ago it started idling rough so i figure it was the carb and i cleaned them but didn't do much for the bike.  other than oil change i never serviced the bike. has 13k miles. and has been siting in back yard for four years without cover. today i tried to start it up but nothing happened what should i do next...... all input appreciated

i will change the battery , clean the carb, flush in gas and clean filter --> anything else you guys think of please let me know and i will do it.

i would to a vavle shim clearance check make sure everything is in spec.  if it has been sitting that long i would say new chain and sprockets, change brake fluid and bleed the brakes front and rear,  prolly goin to need new tires and i would check the bearings while the wheels are off as well. and post up some pics to show how she looks from sitting so long may give a better idea as to what else should be done.

that's what I call reliable motorcycle  :thumb:

+1 to whatever joshr08 said plus check the spark plugs, replace them if anything looks unusual - they're cheap.

I would do a general tune up, what the other guys said, plus replace the fuel lines while you have the tank off.  drain the oil, replace the filter, then put new oil in it.  oil likes to collect moisture

any electronic issues that might affect the starting - while i am at it i should fix that too.

make sure terminals are clean where they connect to battery, and dielectric grease on any connections that appear to have any corrosion on them

It looks fine to me, needs water, soap, and fuel... perhaps a valve check... and a working battery of course...
