Bought a '77 XS650 Project.

Pretty cool Yamaha.   Nice shape '79 "special" no title and a titled '77 "standard" frame.   Everything should switch over except I'll need to have a mount fabbed up for the rear disc master cylinder.
I think the wiring is fried on the '79 can't get a headlight or anything with a good battery (out of my GSe500).    Bike has brand new VM34 Mikuni's on it, motor not stuck or anything.   I work w/ the
guy who had it and he had it running 6 months ago.   We'll see what happens LOL.   Hopefully my minimal investment will be worthwhile.

Just wanted to share with you the 80G (this is the standard, not the Special) that I owned for about 12 years; sold about 3 years ago. Got real good at pulling the carbs and cleaning the jets; make sure you have an inline gas filter. MikesXS is a good source for parts: http://www.mikesxs.net/

Join the club ... 650rider died over christmas. xs650temp is around, but its weird and very cubby holed ...

Anyway I have one that's semi running and one that is a rephase ... crank is outside and the whole bike is .. .well not there ... frame and some bits ... rest I have to make up ...

No freaking kidding, back in 06 on my first XS I lost the left side relay pack runnign down the road on july 4th to see fireworks. Got there just fine ... its not needed to run, just to start ... there a few hours and several beers later - (and no it wasn't skunk beer, and no I didn't buy it at a fancy bar either I got some a few days before and stashed it at my office ... then I met up with friends from work, and hung around and drank) it didn't start. I pushed it to life, got it home and next day found a dangling wire ... I went WTF.

I got her cranked on the kick start this week!    Crazy vibration compared to the GS!  Cool bike those round slide VM Mikuni 34's are mean units!    She fired up on the first kick a few minutes ago.   Not smoking, no clattering noises.....motor seems to be a good one as the previous owner advised.   Looks like the starter solenoid may be the culprit on the electric start.

Prolly not the strater solenoid. On the left side if you remove the relay pack, you have to jumper across in that black plug, I will tell you which wire to which wire. In fact, those relays are notorious for dying. Better off removing and jumpering it.

That is why the GS 500 has a gear driven counterbalancer.. yet another reason I like it so much!

Good luck with that, it should be a lot of fun - I had an XS400 some while back as a project some while back, it was more in the semi-cruiser style. I had a lot of problems with the electrics and someone before me had replaced a lot of wiring with stuff that did not conform to the wiring diagram colours, 90% was black so it was an electrical nightmare but i got it going and eventually gave it to a mate to try and encourage him into the biking community and then he went and died! - his boy is working on it now trying for a complete restoration. Nice bike though but be carefull with the enormous rubber bushes.
