Hi,
I need to replace the front rotor on my 1994 GS 500. What other year models have a front rotor compatible with mine? In general, what is a good source to find whether parts are compatible with e.g.other years or models?

romulux

I believe all model years share the rotor.

Almost all components are shared among all model years.

You can look up your model year on bikebandit or cheapcycleparts and compare a part against a newer model.

I don't know anything about anything.  Follow suggestions found on the internet at your own risk.

lf2503,

If you're going to replace your brake rotor, do not go OEM. I'd strongly advise you to pickup an EBC or Galfer. The OEM stuff is very soft; racing, I've gone through 3 OEM rotors this season.

kman

Why did you buy the second and third oem rotor?

I got that info from http://www.metalgear.com.au/

Go there to cross-reference.

I heard that they rotors were changed when the caliper was changed. Not sure what year that happened though. I also saw that EBC lists a different rotor for the older models but the rear is the same, so Im pretty sure that you should get one for your year.

Kman,

I purchased a stack of 3 used OEM rotors from a friend for about $25.

Hi,
I need to replace the front rotor on my 1994 GS 500.

So If it lasted 16 yrs whats the problem with OEM?

pandymai

if there is a difference in rotors, it would have come about in 96 when they changed the caliper style. so any 89-95 rotor should be sure to work.

If this freshershest-thread-ever gets spoiled by petty fighting, I'm gonna be so mad.

I run a 96 caliper with a 93 GS rotor. It's fine. I wouldn't be concerned about the newer rotors.

If in doubt, check one of the aftermarket manufacturers parts list. They generally won't change a part for no reason... So, if they show compatible numbers across the entire range, the stock stuff is likely (but not guaranteed) to be compatible as well.

I just looked at EBC catalog, they list the same rotors front and rear for all years of gs500. the pads however are different for pre 96. so any gs500 rotor will work

Go down to bike breakers, show him ya old one and he may have one to replace yours.

dgyver

The caliper piston sizes changed... nothing to do with the rotor. The rotor carrier color changed (black & gold)... nothing to do with compatibility.
All years of GS500 rotors are compatible.
Common sense in not very common.
