Changed the oil and filter.  Pretty sure the bike has never had any of the scheduled maintenance done (2005 GS500f, 3k miles), so I am going to do all of it this summer before I have to go back to school.  Who knows, I might even get to bring her back with me.

Mine is in the shop... Exhuast work and Fuel Air mixture repair.

Busy day at the West Seattle Bike Cave.
First, tried to open up Juniors old busted engine and had nothing but problems. I wanted to see what went wrong last year and salvage parts for other members. There are parts UNDER the clutch stuff that have to be removed but you have to remove the clutch which you should do before removing all the parts that keep it from turning so I learned a lesson and gave up. That motor bottom will go to the trash if I can figure what trash it goes in.

Nortwestrider stopped by with Dora (previously Trey). Nice job! Getting her/him ready for the trip to Alaska.

Nonfiction stopped over. We replaced throttle cable. Decided to do fuel lines while tank was off. Then after cleaning the chain we discovered it, too, needed replacing so pulled a new one from the parts shgelf and plopped on a new chain, 14t front sprocket and a few other things.

BrianRC stopped back with Quin who is now called Audrey.

Here are pictures because it DID happen today! Quite a busy day in the Bike Cave.

Dora!

Nonfiction's bike: Crap under a clutch cover with MANY o-rings that should have been in the chain.

BrianRC with Audrey (formerly Quin) and Nonfiction's bike without a name. (Seat off because we also changed air filter)

New countershaft sprocket (14--there's some SNAP off the line now, and it wants another gear on the freeway, go figure), new chain, new throttle cable, new air cleaner, troubleshot fuel starvation issue :dunno_black: and got gently schooled by Adidasguy on a number of routine maintenance issues I've been neglecting out of breezy arrogance. Turns out it's good to know how much oil is in your crankcase, how much water is in your battery, how much air is in your tires. Oh yea, and fuel in the tank.. :embarrassed: (and once again)  :embarrassed:

Good little ride around on a balmy Seattle presummer eve, and I'm feeilng my bike likes me more than ever. So I rewarded it back, by crashing a little hooning about in gravel. Bad NonFiction! No harm, no foul, better than the time I dropped it by forgetting to deploy the sidestand at Backfire moto night. Dork.  :thumb:

Now I see where, as I've been typing this Adidasguy has been doing an epic post of his own... Most of all, enormous thanks to Adidasguy. Also met NorthwestRider and BrianRC. Lucky to have the WS GS community!

It is always fun to have people around and doing wrenching while having a beer.
Also we helped my neighbor unload his CBR from his truck. He has it almost all restored and back together - better than before he did that un-intentional stoppie that flipped the bike.

Scott: had fun! Glad to help you get your no-name bike fixed up. Now what are you calling your adventure bike?

We never did get around to any air gun target practice. Next time.

Pat, you need to move the motorcycle lift into the Bike Cave, bending over and squatting will make you old before your time  :nono:

Finished demolishing Junior's old bottom end. Also demolished a spare engine that was real crap. Word of advice: there is a bolt under the oil sump screen. Removing it makes opening up the engine easier. Without removing it sledge hammers had little effect - but were lots of fun to hit on it! BrianRC and I had some fun hitting it and got to vent some frustrations out on it (followed by some beers!  )

Now ready for the scrap yard. That high grade steel and aluminum will fetch a pretty penny. Actually, gave it all to friend doing new stairs in my house. He likes to sell scrap and it is a "thank you" for giving me the lead for the $400 1992 kawasaki EX-500 (which is running fantastic!)

Without these two engines in the cave, there is room to start another project.

Put the R6 shock in works great. Much better for two up riding. Going to up grade the front now. Also going to get the f frame and do a complete engine and everything swap into the newer frame.

Is that so? I've got an engine in my basement that needs to be either rebuilt or scrapped.

Yep - there is good stuff in them engines when they are no longer good to fix. I salvaged the crank and rods, magneto, stator and stuff for one member. Saved the clutch baskets. Saved the jugs.

My friend has a scrap license - which means he's legal to scrap anything and not be accused of stealing metal from houses and roads and park wiring. By taking in quantity, he gets a better price. Giving him a few rims, too. He says that fetches good money.

Bluesmudge

Finally got the special order Hepco & Becker rear rack in from Germany. A big thanks to Moto International in Seattle for getting me the part, although it did take them 5 months  :2guns:

The H&B rack is better made, and more sturdy than any other GS rear rack I have seen (it better be at almost $200). I got it because it interfaces perfectly with my side cases.

For the moment I have an old EMGO travel trunk mounted back there. I'm going to save up and eventually get Hepco's 55L Junior top case for massive storage but the EMGO does pretty good for now, as I have 90L of total storage. I'll post pictures soon. The bike looks like a tank with all that lockable luggage but handles as good as ever.

peteGS

Starter motor issues for me... two of the stationary magnets were no longer stationary...  :dunno_white:

Now with the help of JB Weld she starts better than she ever has, even when I got her back in '98  :thumb::
