So I am creating a new look for my old pile. Lol
Shaped the seat, trimmed the frame, and removed some "excess weight"
What do ya guys think so far?

I'm thinking that the subframe is gonna fold if you don't weld the lower member to the upper.  :icon_mrgreen:

Am in the works to get that lower part bent up and welded onto the upper. Just ran out of time for today to do it.  :thumb:

made some progress...

I still have a ton of work to do, but I rode it today. First time in years!
Let me know opinions.
Thanks, Sam

*waits for you to hit your first pothole and that entire seat bends down*

It was welded by a professional and load tested for 275 lbs, I weigh 125... it will be fine. Thanks for the concern.  :thumb:

125?! You need to eat a deep fried steak or two.......

I like what you've done. Any concern about your weight multiplied by the G forces of coming down from said pothole? Just don't want you to become "one" with your machine.

How about some more pics?

Lol, I try gaining weight and remain unsuccessful. I will shoot some pics in the daytime and post em up.
Its still far from finished. Front fender needs cleared, fork seals, exhaust work, and seat needs recovered.

I love the direction you are going with it as I had a similar idea for my bike. Currently making it a street fighter with white plastics/tank and a flat black frame and rims. Like I said, I like how its starting to shape up but the only thing that I can't seem to get past is the seat. With the rear section of the seat missing it just looks very strange to me and it bothers me. =/

ahh load testing...

lemme guess you put 275 lbs of weights or just a fat guy on it?

lets also assume that the "load test" didn't stress it at all where it could of started some stress fractures....

now we get into metallurgic variables... What happens when it starts getting old, starts oxidizing, maybe gets heated and cooled in the winter to a point it starts to slowly crack, then lets throw your weight on there + say 1-2Gs of you coming down on it from say a standing position or a pot hole or something, or you know maybe a rear impact.

Then theres the point where he welded it, thats a fun one because thats has been quenched. super heated then cooled by the welding... that causes the metal to be super strong... but super brittle.

Then lets assume it does eventually break... while your driving... whoosh there goes your seat right onto a spinning wheel of death...

My stock seat holds over 500 lbs... it holds 300+ at the back where the leverage is the greatest... put 500 lbs on your bike and see what happens.

I like the Idea... put some work into the design... at least weld a chrome moly rod under the seat or replace the stock frame with it so you are SOL when the time comes.

How can you judge a design you have no images of, excluding a 12' away angle shot in the dark with a cell phone? And it was tested with weights. This was done by a professional shop. Stop being a duck and enjoy what it is. If i risk my life on it, then its my choice. But do not disgrace its structural integrity.

I'm with everyone else. The GS frame isn't the strongest thing in the world and I wouldn't put my ass on a single piece of subframe without a brace. While it may be load tested for static weight on one point of the subframe, that weight changes with how far forward/back the applied weight is, g-force applied on downhill/uphill transition, shock load on bumps and eventual degradation due to corrosion or work hardening due to flexing and fatigue.

The fact the photo is shot with a cell phone has nothing to do with it. It has to do with the properties of metal after welding, fatigue and stress.

Don't get defensive if people criticize it, that's what happens when you post something online for evaluation or criticism. If you want only approval, you're in the wrong place.

That said, with work it will be a beautiful custom and you'll have something to be proud of. Keep it up.

I can see things in this bike that could be awesome.  I like the direction you're going in.  Keep us posted.

And maybe a move to the projects forum?
