I fixed the picture before I even saw your comment.  Out of habit I read my posts after I send them, so I caught it immediately.

It is a drumstick, nylon brush, made by Vic-Firth under the name of "Rock Rakes".  Very stiff bristles, they sound amazing on a high-tension snare-drum and have a little bit more punch than a steel brush on a typical drumset snare.  Handy for acoustic gigs when I need more volume on a rock-shuffle or something like that.

Yes, and no (I work with steel), but wrong object.


No, not a valve or a cap of any kind.  Completely unrelated.  When installed it is a more or less permanent fixture, doesn't turn or rotate or anything like that.

Correct, steel insert in a brass fixture.  Used as an assembly, so the two are one.

Brass bit is about 1.125x1.125 inches, about 2 inches long on the insert.

I doubt you've seen a piece like this, it's a prototype my company manufactured for a local entrepreneur.

That being said, I guarantee you've seen pieces with the same function.  Don't think about what it looks like, think about what it could do.


Brass fixture, steel insert, insert is threaded, the fixture does not turn, rotate, or transfer a substance, several of them work in tandem to accomplish a single task on a musical instrument, and the instrument is of a genre I have used on several occasions.
