I don't know but I SURE appreciate the heads up!!!

I owe you one.

I looked at the feedback history.
Apparently the "seconds" have only very minor flaws, several buyers said they could not see anything at all wrong with them. I am about to order a tall clear sport touring model.
Hmmm...I just found a thread here about the ZG shields. Having seconds thoughts. Those are no fun when you are trying to engage in good old-fashioned impulse buying. It's no longer an impulse. Now it involves a decision, a conscious one.
You see, I have this nice big, thick windshield "blank" I bought on Ebay a good while back specifically with the intent of taking the band saw to it and making a "barn door" for the GS. I made one for my V-Strom once and it was better than anything I could find for the bike at any price....until I knocked the bike over and broke it into a half dozen pieces.
It was very rewarding though, other than the last part. That just plain sucked.

Well, thanks anyway for the heads up. It might come down to a simple coin toss! Or maybe if I wait long enough there won't be any left! :-) Do you have one? If so,, which model and how do you like it? if it's the sport-touring model, how tall are you. I'm 6'2"

Again, thanks!

Hube, here is another thread posted a few weeks ago on them... A bunch of us picked them up, and I don't think anyone was dissapointed.

Inclusion

Again, I had to look hard for the inclusion (slight bubble, less than 1/4'') and you cannot see it after mounted on the bike, at all.

Yeah, 2nds and "blems" are almost always usable and rarely "bad". They just didnt pass QA.

I am 5-9 and have the Sports Touring (recommended by Addidas). If i tuck half way behind it, most of the wind is gone. If i bend all the way forward, it's real quiet. But leaning that forward to me is uncomfortable.

Hey, much obliged for the comments!

I've found some incredible deals on Ebay Motors over the years. I used to make the rounds of local thrift stores, same type of thing. If you're not there looking at the right time, you ain't going to find it!

I've also learned some tricks that help on Ebay. Their search engine is not that thorough AND people will often put things in the wrong category OR they have something which they simply do not know what it is worth. But I would have never found this one cuz I haven't been looking for one. Like I said, I have a nice big, thick windshield I bought specifically to cut down and make a large "touring" type shield for the GS. The one  I modified for use on the DL came from the Dennis Kirk outlet on Ebay. It was an OE replacement type for a 90's vintage Harley dresser of all things! Their catalog price on it was ridiculous, like $250-$300. I put in a bid of $30 and won it.  Very high quality. The aftermarket shields for 02-03 DL1000's were notoriously bad, of poor design, quality.

The "blank" I have now is a real head-scratcher. It says "Bates" on it. Bates used to (still does?) make leathers. I did a web search of the number that is stamped on it, no hits, no "Bates" windshields period. The guy who sold it to me ($20) had no idea what it is from. He had like 10 of them. They were in a storage auction lot. Real nice. Light smoke tint, thick, no scratches. It has 4 holes in it that are far enough out to either be used in mounting on the GS or cut away. Picture this (if you dare!)...I had it bungee strapped to the fairing/mirrors so I could fool around with lean angles/height and such! It was secure, don't worry, or I would not have plonked my butt down on the seat! Oh, and of course I had my large capacity milk crate on the back. "Function before Fluff", I could care less what anyone might think! If I can do grocery shopping and get+/- 60mpg vs. 12mpg with my tired old truck. Wow, that's a tough one alright.

Further picture. Indicated 105mph with lashed-on windshield. Nary a wiggle. Nice solid bike. I don't know how the front side fairings affect handling, I took them off the day I took possession of the bike. I was like, "hide that beautiful engine?" I should mention that the best handling mod I made (to my preferences) was putting a 110/80 tire on the front. Again, another hard earned killer deal from Ebay. After lots of searching. Pair of Michelin Pilot Activs from two different sellers. Came out to $90 for the pair, including shipping. Perfect tires, they rock! Turns out swapping the tires might have even saved my butt. The PO *destroyed* the inside bead on the front tire and scarred up the rim beading surface terribly. Looked like he used a claw hammer and a file instead of tire irons. Never saw anything like it and *none* of the damage was visible on the outside.

I'm so sorry to get waaaaayyyy off topic. Maybe I should start a thread with some pictures about the tire experience.

Let me go grab one of those clear sport touring shields before they're all gone! :thumb:

Thanks again,
Hube

Done!

I figure worse case scenario, if it doesn't work for me, I could probably sell it without taking too much of a hit at that price.  I'm 6'2", I have a set of "bar backs" on the handlebars. About a 2" rise, 3" back (est.) Done pretty much all I can to get a more upright seating position because my neck and shoulders won't handle a more "sporting" stance. We'll see.

Thanks again "ya'll".

"Think Spring!" :-)

Bluesmudge

Anyone else have a problem with their new screen buzzing? Mine makes quite the racket when the revs get above 4500, I can even hear it at 60mph on the freeway.

Do you have your side fairings on the engine? With mine off, my cowl will vibrate against the dash piece and make noise. Not my screen though
