Today started out good.  Just a telecommute day with a routine physical in the afternoon.  I casually mentioned an issue I was having with my eye.  Next thing I know the doctor calls an ophthalmologist and makes an appointment for right after ny appointment with her.

An hour at the eye doctor and they tell me I have a detached retina and I will have an appointment with a retina surgeon in a day.  Waiting could mean going blind.  I'm still like huh  :dunno_black: WTF just happened???

I should say that being told all this is NOTHING compared to being told you have cancer.  After that nothing seems horrible.

Oh snap. I hope that the surgery goes alright.

Into surgery rapidly. Ensure by discussing with colleagues/friends/medical advisors that you have surgeon with good reputation. Good luck.

I'm probably going to have this happen one day.  I already have lattice degeneration in both eyes, and very bad myopia.  Doctor said mine will likely detach before I'm 50.

john, I was diagnosed at 12 years old with detached retina. as a kid, it makes no sense. the surgery is very fast, out patient if no health complications preexisting.

the healing is wide ranging from light duty for a week to prone in whatever position as needed for weeks with only bathroom breaks.

the results, nearly no vision loss (rare) to a blurry curtain (common) effecting a percentage of the field of view.

over time, expect a cataract to form in that eye. its a long term side effect, easily repairable.

the worst I've suffered besides the recent cataract and loss of depth perception (stereo vision loss) is high contrast blurrs and migranes.

3D movies are worthless, as are some low light/ high spot situiations.

the good news is, there are dietary supplements to help prevent further weakening of the retina, and hardening of the sclera.

do everything your doctor suggests religiously, and seek another source for recommendations of prevention. it pays, in spades.

left eye here is legally blind, right eye is much better than 20/20 corrected (glasses), and everyday of vision is cherished. I'm riding as much as possible in my 40's, and expect one day to loose vision to the point of no more motor sports.

the pictures and videos you hold dear, look at them every week. baby pictures, kids faces, the wife... study. one day, poof.

:)

It turns out not to be a retina detachment, but a fluid cyst between the layers of the retina.  This is less dangerous and after some blasts from a laser today I am good to go.  It could get worse, but also could never change.  Man is my eye sore.

So good news I guess.  Though I am predisposed to have a retinal detachment down the road...but maybe not.

Man has it been a wild 24 hours.

John that is good news. A Main thing in specified dietary supplements Ohgood speaks of for eye health are zinc. Zinc tablets are an economic way of add to eye health and are recommended by many.

Honest to goodness, about 2 months ago I started taking Zinc and selenium supplements. No reason to stop now! Zinc is an important nutrient.  Who knows, it may have saved me from that detachment they were so sure I had.

And my eye is feeling better.  Did that laser ever burn .  Not fun.  My vision is not quite back in my left eye yet, but getting better.  I bet after a good night's sleep I'm good to go.

Trust me, the thought of losing vision in that eye, knowing what I do for work, was a bit worrying.  Man I got lucky.

Awesome news John!! ..  :thumb: ... hope you didnt lash out too early and get that pirate suit!  ;)

ive been taking Zinc tabs and magnesium tabs too for couple years .. for muscle aches and various other minor issues.... have you noticed that its not always that you notice the positive effects .. until you miss a day or so and you 'go back to feeling like before' ?

... and also... im investigating a personal theory here... taking Zinc .. i seem to have 'more of' & 'more vivd' dreams when i take the zinc ... or at least i remember them more... some of them are really 'real' too... you noticed anything like that? ... every one is different with reactions to various minerals etc .. just exploring the idea.

Anyway .. rest that eye up and feel better eh!! ... who knows when you might have to peep through a keyhole again?!  ;)

Insanity causes more vivid dreams!  That's your problem, your doctor is just afraid to tell you.  Honestly, I don't notice much of a difference, but it is vital, and any extra just gets peed out.  Every system is a little different, I do not doubt a particular vitamin can have more impact on some.

But the fact remains that this should have caused a detachment and it didn't.  Could zinc have hardened me up?  Why not.  It's possible.  Being told I am lucky is enough to keep me taking it.  It is believed to be helpful for macula degeneration, well that's part of the retina.

The only suck part is I guess I will always have this shadow in my periphery.  It is very distracting.  This is the one thing that makes the doc worried as I shouldn't be able to notice it.  Still I'm stoked that I dodged a bullet.
