Dipstick Level Span

I had to top up my oil yesterday, so I figured I'd be semi-scientific about it, so I got the oil to the 'Low' mark, which left me with ~850 ml of oil in the bottle (and so took ~100 ml); this was my starting point.

In between each step (except maybe after the first addition, based on color), I let the bike run for like a minute, then sit for a couple before I read the stick.

Also, please excuse the horrific photos - taking a one-handed shot of a dipstick with an iPhone is not easy.

0 ml Added - Low
It's low - what else can I say?

~200 ml Added
I added approximately 200ml, which seemingly brought it about halfway up the hashmarks.

~400 ml Added
I added approximately another 200ml, which looks like it only moved it half again up the hashmarks to the 3/4 point.

~550 ml Added - Almost Full
I added approximately another 150ml, which looks like it nearly made it to the top - I think there's probably room for another 50ml or so, if I had to guess - which I'm doing.

Conclusion
Based on what I did here - right or wrong - I would say that the distance between Low and Full on a 1993 GS500E is around 600 ml - about 2/3 of a quart - not a whole quart.  I would also say that at the halfway mark, I'm actually down about 400ml

Cool!   I always wondered about that...I figured it was less than a quart....now I know...Usefull in toping off oil without overfilling....

While I don't intend to let it get to the bottom again, I might try a different approach to this next time, hopefully with a bit less ghetto-guesstimating.

I check the oil every day...and during a long ride...in the middle of the ride...I guess I'm overcautious..1/2 way down the dipstick Min/Max and I top off....so now I know that's about 1/3 qt.  (10 oz.)
