Slippery tyre from being stored

My front tyre is very unnerving at corners. It's been stored on the bike for 5 years and has no visible cracks in sidewall etc. buuuuut it's quite slippery on the sides.

1. I SHALL REPLACE THE TYRE

2. it will be 10 days before it arrives and I have to get to work.

3. I've been told to take a rough file to the sides to take off the "glazed" part. Has anyone else done this? Or should I just commute very slowly as is until the replacement arrives?

I don't know where you are, but by your spelling I would guess the UK, where it is winter and the tyre would not get warm enough to get the best grip, coupled with the age cracks in the grooves, I would not risk riding on it.

As you state in your post, the amount of grip that you are getting is minimal to put it mildly. Abrading the sides will remove the "glazed" part but will not help the aged rubber to soften and produce grip.

Back on bikes and loving it.

I'm in south Australia and heading into summer
So twocool you've done this and I should commute slowly on it until the replacement arrives?

1) No I haven't done that.
2) I wouldn't do that
3) I buy new tires just about every year
4) I have a car to get to work when I don't take my GS

If the choice is getting fired, or going broke because you can't get to work...I would ride slowly to work.

5) Slow is a relative term  (some people think 60 MPH is slow...I think 20 MPH is slow and 15 in the turns.)

6)Find somebody to drive you to work

7)Don't they have bike shops in Australia?  Where you can go right in and get a new tire?

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a wiseass....

No I don't have a bike shop in my town. The nearest bike shop is approximately 250 miles away.

If i HAD to ride to work(no alternative) i would ride as defensibly as possible.
Keep in mind it's not just u at risk, there's other ppl on the road and their not aware of your limitations.
No big leans,no hard braking,no wild accelerations....no attract attention.
Sunday ride, street legal granny...and proud of it.  :)

The oem B'stone tires on my 97 GS that I bought new in 99 were cracked all over like you show and I put 8k miles on them in 4 months before changing them.  I rode like an old grandpa then because I was one.   :icon_lol:

Have a Dunlop Arrowmax going on today as that's the only brand that I can get in Whyalla SA. I'd never heard of duro tyres but Google helped me understand why it was in there. It's around $90 compared to $150 but rated for a 400cc bike. I'm sure having a rubbery tyre on the front will help and later in the year I'll swap the Bridgestone on the back to a Dunlop. To be fair most bikes front tyre wears out first anyway. This one has loads of tread but went bad from being stored for 5 years.

I've worn a front all the way down to the non gripping carcass , but on my super moto, where dropping the bike means nothing.

if you're not sure, get the tire up to temperature by repeated long stops from 30-40mph, and then look at it. more than likely you have nothing to worry about.

Full of cracks in the grooves of the tread. Was a cheap ass tyre but it just didn't stand up to being stored.  It still has the new green and red tyre marks.

Just give it shaZam!, and tip it in and you will wear the old rubber off. It aint a super bike. It'll be ok as long as you stay on.
Arrowmax might be a good choice for the GS. I used to run them on my RD's and they would let go under power out of corners quiet nicely. I have michelin street pilots on my GS but they dont let go under power, which i dont like about them.
No matter what i do to it, it's still a GS
It's not how fast your bike is, it's how long you are prepared to hold the throttle on.

Funny story. I went to drop off the wheel and the tyre mob hadn't ordered the tyre. Pissed off I went to the Bridgestone place that had taken ages to get back to me and they discovered a 110/70 17 front battleaxe?? So I've got Bridgestone front and back. They did notice the cracks in the tread but inspection from inside shows the tyre had lots of life left. So I'll see if it's worth $20 to someone who needs a legal tyre.

Not safe to ride on but safe enough to sell, eh?  I see how it is.

Daeouse

well, guess its a kind of win-win then. Maybe they'll do some light surface work on the tire before selling it. . . but I doubt it. Just don't buy used tires from there, I guess. :dunno_black:

Apparently it was safe to ride on. Needed a good clean.
