GS500F Zero Gravity not fitting!

Hello GSTwins

I just bought a 05' GS00F, and I love it.
I wanted to try and swap out the stock windscreen for a zero gravity, since I read around the internet that it makes a huge difference.
I went with the Sport Touring.

Today I recieved the new windscreen, but when I tried to replace it, I found that it doesn't fit propperly.
The holes are all the right places, but there it to much excess plastic around the holes.
It causes a problem with the lower pair of screws in the windshield, since this section crosses a piece of the fairing going inward. I have tried to outline the piece I am talking about:

Have any of you experienced something similar?
When reading around the internet, everyone seemes to experience a perfect fit?

What can I do about it?
Is it possible to cut/dremel/scrape material away from the windshield?

Pics would help a lot towards getting you the best answer possible. :thumb:

First things first: contact Zero Gravity and voice your concern. It may just be an error on their end, and they might send out a replacement or have a solution.

If tthere's no other alternative, you can cut the excess off. But do some research before hand - plastic (or whatever the actual name of the screen material is) can need special techniques to do it properly.

Is the picture in the link not worling?
Or do you need pictures of something else?

Bluesmudge

If I remember, you have to kinda lift the GS fairing so that it can lift over the part you have circled and then pop into the hole on the screen. If you just push the screen it will not go in.

I will have to try fitting around again, but here's some better pictures.

I was hoping for a pic of you fitting it to the bike itself. Then we could see where the issue was in the situation. However, Bluesmudge is most likely correct. . .

I will give it another try, if it doesn't work I'll try to make a video showing the issue :)

I gave it another try.
Actually, it feels like the whole thing is off measurements.

It seems to hard to force the screen to line up with the hole in the front, even though this hole is the only one that seems possible to get lined up.

The two holes in the side will never be centered with the holes in the fairing, although I imagine it is possible to force the rubber "holders" back into place. This does not seem right though, and furthermore, it lifts the nose of the screen up so that the front screw is now really forcing it into shape - this is not how the original sets in place..

Last I discovered that the upper most screws is also causing trouble. When they are in place (there's a "tap" on the inside of the fairing), the inner part of the fairing cannot reach and get back into place. There is sort of a "shelf" in the inner fairing where the shield is resting, and when it does, there is just no way that it can reach the holes to fit.

I have no ploblem at all fitting the original screen back into place!

I tried to make a video, but it was pretty hard to do one handed.

Ok, going to cross post this so its available both places.
1) Have you tried putting the bottom bolt in first (by the headlight), then the middle bolts, and finally popping the rear into place over the "posts"?
2) Have you contacted the manufacturer for assistance?

Yes to both.

(1), the first 3 can be forced in, but it seems wrong, the uppermost wont fit.

Odd. . . I'm at a loss, then. Maybe some of the other more experienced guys/gals have something that will help. . .

Yup it doesn't fit.  You gotta call the manufacturer and either get a replacement or break out the dremel and grind away the interfering bits.

dathudo

Thanks guys, Zero Gravity told me it needs to go back, but since their policy states that I will have to pay the shipping both ways, they recommended me to consider using the dealer for return. I have sent an email to sportbiketrackgear.com and asked what they recommend.

Did you try explaining to them that this a defective product not a return because you changed your mind.

If it were me I'd tell them they can replace it at no cost or give me a full refund, shipping included, otherwise I'll publicly review their products and discourage others from buying their products.

That they wouldn't jump on this and make it right is a bad sign...

dathudo

They've got the whole story. I'm guessing they don't feel 100% shure it's a problem with the shield.
But you might be right. I'm not good at being the "claiming-what-I-paid-for" kinda customer  :D

lucas

Do you think you have an aftermarket front fairing?  That could be it, if the thing was poorly made.

Know anyone else in your area who has a GS?  You could try fitting the screen on their bike to check it.

Janx101

I've got a clear touring screen and it clipped into place pretty easy! ...

Pics of the fairing insides and where the screen is fouling on the fairing would be helpful....

I did have to pull apart a reasonable amount of the top fairing assembly to make it an easy fit!

dathudo

Bought the bike second hand from a dealer so I don't know for shure, but I am pretty shure it's 100% original.

The stock screen is easy tofit back on. I don't see anything in the way or anything. I remove the rubber "holders" when disassemblying the bike, so it can almost slip right in.

The dealer agreed to replace it for now
