Shoei RF1000 lining disintegrating

I've never had this happen to me in a helmet, but this is my first shoei.
I've had it since 08 I think, never crashed, and in the last 4 yrs never even used much. I did use it a fair bit in the first 2-3 yrs I had it.

The lining on top - basically the piece of cloth with foam backing that would sit on top of your head has been shedding that backing foam for the last few days, I'd notice a little bit under the helmet, and didn't think much of it, but on the ride today it basically was raining grey foam inside my helmet, worse with the face shield down. And I get to work and try to see where its coming from and its basically completely crumbling and coming off in a goopy dust. This isn't the Styrofoam, that would be a structural problem, its the thin piece of cloth lining sitting between the Styrofoam and the top of your head.

My Bieffe's from the 90's which I will have to bring out and start using pretty soon never did this. One more case of having to buy a new one cos something tiny is giving up.

Cool.

Hey Buddah, Short version:
you're helmet is expired, get a new one.

Long version;
That black foam on the inside is the EPS liner and it acts just as a packing peanut would after a while. once it ages, it becomes brittle and will start to fall apart. On your RF1000 you should be able to find a manufacture, or birth date of the helmet. generally, around 5 years is where it will start to degrade. if you're lucky and don't use it hardly at all you can get about 7 years out of it.

And now, after re-reading your problem i realize it's the lining going bad, not the EPS. Good news is that should be replaceable, considering the age of the helmet you might be out of luck, unless it's the same as the RF1100. But I bet you could find them online somewhere.  Bad new.. that helmet is too old to be wearing regardless. I'd recommend a new one, but that being said, it's your head, not mine.

I know a place where you can get a nice new RF1200 though for around $440. =D But realistically. I'd just try to find a new liner if possible. should be a cheap easy fix if available.

I have 18yr old Bieffe that is intact all around.

Sorry, this is the Chinese crap they put in so you have to buy crap that may be actually worse than what you have.

I'll be putting in a towel onto the Styrofoam and maybe see if I can find a glue that will hold it in, in fact removing it to wash it is an option, so I shouldn't glue it.

8 years for a helmet is reasonable and Styrofoam can also disintegrate(my old AGV  >:() becoming unsafe.
Maybe it's a good excuse to get a new and better helmet....this time with minimal to none of that silly "built-in obsolescence".
