Can I simply just cut off my exhaust on my gs500e? New to riding...

So I have never tried to mod a motorcycle before but i want to Cafe/bob out my '93 gs500e. The first thing I was thinking of doing was cutting off the exhaust (or the big can at least). I just want to know what effects this will have on my bike? Will i lose power/speed/acceleration? And will I have to do any carb adjusting or re-jetting? I really want to cut this off like ASAP I just don't want to comepletely ruin my bike. Help???

It sounds like complete shaZam! when it's muffler less. My muffler weld broke so I took it off for fun. Welded it right back on.

For sure lol. I still want to try it just to hear it, I can easily weld it back on if it is crazy annoying though. Other than it being obnoxious were there any issues with it off like overheating or running too lean? I Just don't want to effect my bikes health haha just for a cut muffler and loud exhaust.

I think it might have an effect on the back-pressure the engine might need, but I'm not a mechanic. . .

I'll tell you the truth all around: it's a bad idea.

Every cop you roll past will be happy to have a chat with you. Every neighbor will hate you. You'll lose power from the engine at all rpm ranges (except for a very narrow band that you will never use). And lastly, there won't be anything else supporting the rest of your exhaust, so it can actually rattle itself to death.

Seriously, it's a terrible idea.

Yeah you're right... Taking all of that into consideration it probably isn't the best idea. But damn what should I do then I definitely want a shorter exhaust pipe, I think that looks better in general. Any muffler suggestions?

I'm cutting down the back end of the frame as well for just a single seat. This is all starting tonight after work lol...

They make shorty aftermarket mufflers, and I'd weld support tabs on somewhere. . .

You guys and your silly back pressure horse crap. You are clearly misguided in the realm of exhaust gas escape velocity. You can achieve zero back pressure with high escape velocity and make more power in way thats safe for the engine. Engines are air pumps! you want the engine pulses to leave the exhaust in an efficient manor.

If you're a drag-racer, yes. For every-day riding, you'll have no power, piss off everyone, lose all your hearing, and quite possibly have your bike impounded. But hey, its a free country (in America, at least), so do what you want. . .

Im not trying to start a war here. You are not correct in your statement. This is not racing technology. It is healthy engine technology. The only time the gs engine especially would benefit from back pressure would be in the 8000rpm range and above. For low end torque you would want free flowing fast escaping exhaust velocity. I run a properly jetted and debaffled exhaust and experience no issues with it what so ever. Plugs are the color of creamy peanut butter and oil always looks fresh as new.  People will do what they want to do. Research the engineering involved before making blanket statement about the subject. There is a natural step down in motorcycle exhaust in the collector and where the slip is. This is were your back pressure will come from. Removing the baffle on the later system is easier to compensate for as the Pulse air induction read valve helps the system out greatly. and can be modded very easily to add in reducing crank case vacuum.

Syntax, I'm curious as to what exactly you're talking about. I reread all the posts in this thread and it looked to me like the OP wanted to cut his muffler off, and everybody basically told him reasons not to do it.

Sure, back pressure was brought up, and it's a common mis-used term when it comes to exhaust flow. But I'm not understanding what got you worked up (for lack of a better term).

I've tried to research exhaust flow as much as I can (remember, I'm a machinist and not an engineer). So if you have more details about the science of exhaust flow / noise reduction / and horsepower, I'm all ears.

Your right. My bad. Was kinda trollish. Passion got the best of me. An electric butterfly right before the the slip would give you the best of both worlds although I doubt it could be jetted to accommodate both running scenarios.

Thanks to everyone who replied on this post... Seriously, helped my decision making a lot, so much appreciated!!

I have decided to keep on my stock exhaust until I just buy an aftermarket muffler. Probably the safest and smartest choice for a noob like me. I will be starting up my project here in about a week so I'll start a new project thread to show how it goes!!

But hey since I couldn't cut the muffler I had to cut something. So I shaved off the stock mudflap from the back end of the bike to make a ghetto DIY fendor eliminator (until I actually buy one haha).

Oh yeah and last thing, took my first spill the other night on her  ... The rain caught me on the way home, not fun... :bs:

That looks good Brax! I don't think they actually make a fender eliminator kit for the GS but I could be wrong... seems that everyone does custom like you and cuts off as much as they want  :thumb:

I went a step further and cut the whole thing. I made aluminum brackets for the license plate and mounted my signals (from an '04 gixxer... the GS ones were quite long!) up on the rear plastics.

I'm sorry to hear about your spill! You okay? My favorite thing someone told me when I first started riding was, "There are two kinds of riders... those who have gone down and those who will." Now that you've gotten that out of the way, ride on  8)

Keep us posted on what else you do to the bike!!  :thumb:
Superbike bars, '04 GSXR headlight & cowl, DRZ signals, 1/2" fork brace, 'Busa fender, stainless exhaust & brake lines, belly pan, LED dash & brake bulbs, 140/80 rear hoop, F tail lens, SV650 shock, Bandit400 hugger, aluminum heel guards & pegs, fork preload adjusters, .75 SonicSprings, heated grips

Thanks lol I'm glad you don't think it looks like complete sh*t ha! Yeah I'm alright I wasn't going very fast just wasn't expecting it to slip out form under me!! Good thing I had my guardian bell  haha. I'll most definitely keep everyone updated on how it's turning out! Thanks again for the concern!! Definitely woke me up a bit to riding lol.

I have a bell too..! My mom bought it for me  :embarassed:  :kiss3:

Had to "Google" that.

When I told my mom I bought a motorcycle she nodded and looked away from me. She turned back to me and asked, "What's a 'motorcycle'?"
