The gasket on my magneto cover is totally baked and brittle. Is there any magic I can work to make the job easier?

I've always used the 'razor blade and tons of patience' method.

I has almost rock solid gasket baked on so I had no choice but to use gasket remover. However I removed some paint from the edges of the stator cover because I did not know that it was painted to look like it's not painted. Doh, but it's not a big deal. Worth putting some high temperature sealant on the rubber grommet that is wrapped around the wires.

This always worked best with me as well.. I'm an airplane mechanic and we have tried all kind of chemicals and the only one that really works is patience and lots of swearing..

I ended up using a razor blade in the end as well. Bits of gasket went everywhere though, so I had to take out the stator and give everything a good clean.

I still find it hard to believe that professionals use this method, they work by the hour and this method would take far too long.

Mechanics probably have methods that work fast and are good enough. Razor blade also has a high potential to make a scratch that oil could leak through.
Its the best method for your own bike where you have the time and desire for the job to be done right (and airplanes too, apparently  :) )

I found that soaking the case cover overnight in gas or acetone softens them up to the point where they just peel off. Just replaced mine last week and after a soak in gas overnight it came right off. Be gentle with the razor blade so you don't gouge the alum case. I went over mine with 1500 grit sandpaper real quick to remove any burs caused by the razor blade.

Make little scrapers from bits of perspex, with a sharpened edge like a chisel. Avoid risk of scratching the alloy.

easy-off oven cleaner is pretty gnarly stuff and should help...but yeah i just split the cases on one of my cb750s and spent a couple hours cleaning all of the different gasket surfaces and the razor blade with a steady hand is the best bet. Good Luck.
