I'm back and with California bike questions.

So last time I posted here I was having issues with my bike bogging down really hard and if I didn't keep the throttle on the bike would die. The revs would raise but speed would stick. After over 11 weeks of being in the shop (because they dropped my bike and had to repair it)  they discovered two things; first, the shop I had previously taken it to had messed up routing of some tubes so I had a fairly large vacuum leak and 2, my bike is a California bike.

I don't live in California so it's not necessary, the shop told me that they could convert it to a 49 states bike for 500 bucks. Now I'm just curious what goes into converting it from California to a regular bike.

I'll take a stab at this, until the truly knowledgeable gurus step in.

I live near SF and have a  2007 bike.  As far as I understand things, it mostly has to do with the PAIR system which injects air into the exhaust system to help control emissions.  There are several other threads on removing the PAIR.  Its heart is the silver box under the gas tank, on the front left of the frame.
Also, on the top front of each 2004+ carb is a vertical white disc with ports which you can cap off.

Doing these modifications can help to eliminate potential sources of vacuum leaks, which seem to be gremlins for many carburated vehicles. 

There are a lot of parts to fiddle with, and done incorrectly can make your bike run even worse.  Even so, $500 sounds ridiculously expensive.  Even at $50/hour shop rates, it shouldn't take more than a couple hours.  Unless the mechanic spends the other 8 hours reading all our posts on this forum on how to do the job correctly...

"You remove the PAIR on a GS by identifying the vacuum hose that makes it work, disconnecting that and capping off the open fitting on the "T".  You disconnect the fresh air hose at the airbox and cap that (caps available at autozone and similar).  Then you remove everything else.  The open holes on the head are finished with small lauminum plates made for this purpose (ebay) and new, used, or gaskets made of high temp RTV.  Read "PAIR" system removal for Suzuki 1500 Intruder and others to get the basic idea. "

My bike is a non-california 2006 F model and it has a PAIR system. There is more to the california emissions crap than the PAIR system.

Send me the carbs, I'll Non CA it and jet it for $50. Sheesh, these crooks are the reason why I started doing this type of work.
Most of the $$$ is for jetting it, non CA crap is nothing, and free.

Really? I think I may take this up. I'm still debating on it because I also plan on selling the GS soon.
