Hello,

I bought a 2004 GS500F a short while ago. Previously I owned a Honda 1982 CM450E. Which is both considerably older and a completely different type of motorcycle. I am confused by something...

My bike wont start with the clutch in. Period. This is very weird for me as my old bike would start in 1st or N with the clutch in and N with the clutch out. Reading a 15 y/o thread I see that perhaps a PO has modded the bike. Can anyone confirm or offer any other reason for this? I would love to be able to start with clutch in as I occassionally stall it on hills at stops and it is a pain to take it out of 1st and put it into N then start it and put it into gear again.. Thanks!

sounds weird, its like.. its reserved, circuit closed when clutch out and open when clutch in, must be the switch? id check the clutch switch, maybe open it up and check the connectors, if you feel like you dont need it cut the wires and short em.

That is if the system works on closed circuit, counter that, if it works when open 😄 Cant be too complicated

Thanks! Much obliged.

Maybe I will just replace the entire switch with a new one. I am thinking someone bypassed switch as per the 15y/o thread... Which is what I think you are getting at with the open/closed. Then if I ever decide I want this feature.. I can swap them out.

I suggest you test it by jumping the wires at the switch, and see if she fires up. Yes, new switch, no, not a bad switch, necessarily.
