The GS500 Wiki is open for business! :thumb:
Password has been set to 'January2009'http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500 (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500)
Here's how it works...
- All articles can be edited by anybody. If you want to change something, from content to formatting to a picture, you can do so. No password is required.
- Because of this, vandalism may be a problem. I keep daily backups of everything, so the data is safe. If it's a problem, I will change the site to require a password to upload and edit, which will either be posted here or provided upon request to forum members.
- I am the only "moderator", in that I have the ability to lock pages, add or remove passwords if necessary, and restore vandalized pages. If you would like to volunteer to help monitor the site as a moderator, let me know.
- Editing is easy, though you will need to learn a few basic characters so you know how to add links, pictures, bullets, headings, etc. There are links from the front page of the site that tell you how, and a "sandbox" to practice in. You must put your name (your forum name is fine) if you edit a page.
- If you want to add a new article, you must first edit an existing page and create a link to the new one. The new page link will show up in red, signifying that it doesn't exist yet. Clicking on the link will allow you to edit it.
- The basic structure is as outlined in this older thread: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28212.0 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28212.0). If you wish to make major organizational changes, let's discuss it.
- It looks like Wikipedia. It acts like Wikipedia. It is NOT Wikipedia. It is software running on my personal webspace. The only connection is that it is the same concept (a wiki) and the "skin" I chose looks like Wikipedia. The Wikipedia article on the GS500 is meant to inform the general public of what the bike is, not provide articles pertinent to owners.
- Permission has been granted from some of the members who host their own GS500 articles to migrate these to the wiki. Kerry, Pantablo, and Starwalt, thank you. I have their permission to host text and pictures, meaning that the links won't be lost if their site changes. Other sites, such as MikeT's, will hopefully be moved over when their owners are contacted. Finally, if you've written up articles or plan to do so, please add them to the wiki. From the $1 tankbag to a turbo, all articles and information are welcome.
- If you'd like to help out, there is still lots to be done. Every red link is an article that's softly calling out your name and saying "write me". Please take an article, from the GSTwins FAQs, the forums, or one of the above sites, and migrate it to the wiki. This means moving pictures, copying text, formatting appropriately, and crediting the original author(s).
- The purpose is NOT to get rid of the forum. There is no substitute for the help of our members when it comes to troubleshooting, recommending products, and sharing their experiences. The site is purely meant to save time in searching for part numbers or asking about the purpose of a particular modification, questions which get asked and answered over and over.
Good work!!! Please make this a sticky. :thumb: :thumb:
Good job. That looks like it's going to be a fantastic easy-to-use resource once all the basics get filled in.

yay :) gj sanjay
Can we get a statement from some of the more prolific posters (Kerry, srinath, et al) that we can have permission to paste text from informative posts into the wiki, and copy images to the wiki server? I'd like to take some of the forum posts that have helped me a lot and paste and edit them into the wiki so there'd be a bit less "search n00b" and more "look at this wiki section"
As I understand it, forum posts are "owned" by the poster, so permission would technically be required to do this. Doesn't have to be formal, you could reply to this thread and say "I give permission for anyone to copy the text of my informative posts into the wiki, and edit them for accuracy and clarity." or something like that. I wouldn't want anything to happen (CYA) that would cause anyone to question the ownership of the content in the wiki.
I agree that forum posts are "owned" by the poster, and so any effort to move that text to a new place should credit them. But here's the problem. Some of them aren't on here anymore. Many who are won't see this thread or will forget. And there are lots of cases where information is repeated in several threads by different members.
I already got permission from a few people with independent sites to move their articles over, so I assume that includes their forum posts. I haven't gotten a reply yet from John about moving stuff from the GSTwins.com articles, or from other site owners, but at some point I'll copy some content, give due credit, and just assume that it's ok unless I hear otherwise.
It simply will take too much time to sort through posts, determine who wrote the stuff first, get their permission, and write it up. I'd much rather add the info to the wiki, credit them, and take it down if they object.
The wiki is looking great, Sanjay! The wealth of pictures is really starting to make it "feel" good.
I'd like to encourage some of the other members to get involved in filling it out. Many hands make light work, and if you look at it now, you will see what an incredible resource it could be with your help.
nick: Are you going to fill out the exhaust page? I think in your short time here, you might have learned more about exhausts than anyone. I didn't imagine there were 10 different exhaust systems to put on the GS.
Some of the folks who know more about jetting can fill out the rejet page (which right now is just the rejet matrix with not much explanation). That would help a ton of clueless people.
I want to make the wiki it look really nice and shame the FZR community into making something similar. :)
I think if everyone just adds detail to one page of the wiki, in two/three weeks time, we'll be able to say "Wiki, n00b!"
I've been adding a little bit here and there, going to try and chip away at it when I have free time.
Bravo!!! SanJAy
Thank you.
I've been adding some here and there, put something into a couple red sections, but my stuff still needs a lot of work, so get going!
The wiki is sticky! Thank you, anonymous purple mod.
I've been watching the statistics and things are going great. 331 hits on the home page and 1950 page loads (although the first 400 are mine). Looks like Upgrades is more popular than Maintenance (does that say anything about us?) We have hits from Canada, Lithuania, the UK, Switzerland, and Greece (I don't count, since the largest bike I've seen in India is 180cc, though one had a GSX-R sticker on it, which went really well with the 100/90 tire). No security breaches, no vandalism. I couldn't be happier so far.
And to all the members who have contributed so far, bravo! It looks amazing. Alpha deserves special mention for shamelessly photowhoring his bike in the case guards section (I guess the exhaust upgrades section looks ok, too :thumb:). But to all the contributors, from full articles to minor corrections, thanks and keep it coming! And to those who haven't yet..well, Chuck put it better than I could.

This part is actually inaccurate, but I'll let Alpha find the vandalism.
Unnamed: That first pic is not the drain bolt pic.
Thats really embarassing. I just got the pictures mixed up, I swear! I really do know where the drain bolt is!

Haha, yeah. I had some free time today and wrote the definative Exhaust post. There should be no more questions about any system offered for the GS (except for the old Hindle system... crap. I'll add it later). I got most of the information from my head and through this wonderful feature known as SEARCH!
As for the post whoring, I'm the only one with pictures so I might as well show people!!
I'll chip away at it some more tonight. I think I've got a good Handlebar thing going on in my head.
Sanjay do you have any plans for the General page? I was thinking of adding a bunch of basic GS500 info to the top but I don't know if you planned on creating a new page of that sorta stuff or if you had other intentions.

Go for it :thumb: Add anything you want and then as things grow we can decide changes in layout or how it's organized.
That's already a great site you've got started there, and I can only see it getting better over time.
Thanks to all who have a part in the making!

I'm on vacation and I don't have an internet connection most of the time, but I'll be back working on it this weekend.
i will be adding gsxr mirrors and custom tail lamp section in the next two weeks
Is the GS500 Factory Repair Manual free/legal to download? A link to a PDF file has been posted on the wiki...
I saw that. I don't think it is legal to distribute copyrighted material like that, so it would probably be a good idea to take down the link, or switch it with one leading to amazon.

+1. We try to remove postings of copyrighted materials on GSTwin as soon as we see them or they're reported to us.
Hey you know what would be cool? A bunch of those Under Construction GIFs with flashing lights and cones and stuff. neato! Also, we should embed some midi files in the most viewed pages!
sorry... I'm a bit loopy from too many hours staring at pictures of forks...

Sounds like my first webpage back in the mid 90s. *shudder*
I'll try and update this thing some more. I had a 53 hour work week last week so I never really had that much time to work on it. This week is only 34 hours so I should be able to at least add a little bit.
working on fork replacement section. check it

The site won't load! i was in the middle of it. i think i saved.
Yeah that was really weird. For the past 10 minutes, it's been giving me server errors. It might have something to do with upgrades to the CGI service (the programs that allow the wiki to work). I'll send some emails and figure out what happened. In the meantime, it looks like it's running now. Sorry if you lost any work - I'd recommend using the "Save and Edit" button as much as possible.
didn't lose any work.
it doesn't let me delete pictures i've uploaded. will you delete from the fork section:
CDocuments and SettingsBaldurs GateDesktopSuzuki GS500 front axle dimensions.gif

and please change it's name if you can to "Front fork replacement"

Keeping the URL short is important, and all the upgrades are replacements, really. I think keeping it as Upgrades/FrontForks will get the message across.
Nice work!
Also, to everyone:
If you post on something in the main forum that isn't in the wiki but should be, take a few extra minutes to add it. Just adding a link to a forum topic will make things a lot easier. Much of the work in writing up a page is sorting through all the forum posts, so even a little effort by posters will go a LONG way. Thanks!
Ok I've added another page called Quick Post. If you have something to add to the wiki, just add it here:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Main/QuickPost?action=edit
A link to a page, a link to a forum topic, a part number, a new retailer, anything.
If you see something that we should have on there, then put it here and that way you or someone else can expand it at your leisure. When things get expanded, those links can be removed from the Quick Post section.
I'm buying new tires soon. So I spent some time combing through the threads about tires. I tried to take what I learned and put it on this page:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Tires
But it needs some help. If everyone who knows just one thing about tires can add it to that page, it would rock.
Sorry I haven't been doing much recently, I've been pretty busy and I'm running out of things I actually know about. Hopefully I'll be able to get to work again in a week or two.
I want to upload this video http://www.fototime.com/EC389D73F8CBA95/orig.wmv, which demonstrates a Katana 600 front end with Race Tech springs and emulators on a track, to the Front Fork section. it's 12.9MB.
Right now I don't have enough hosting space or bandwidth to put videos on the site. We can either provide a link to it, or we could upload it to Google Video or YouTube if you think there's a chance the link will break. It's up to you.
What about a .txt file? I've uploaded and put a link to it. It displays an error when you follow the link... I'ts only a .txt file... Can you do something about it? It's here: http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/FrontForks#modifying
Fixed. I have a moody webserver.
Sanjay, your site used to be the #1 result on google for "gs500 wiki" but now it's not even on the list. Any idea what happened?
The 1 person who linked to it took down the link?
What probably happened was that Google's indexing program was in the middle of updating itself, and you caught it before the wiki was added. I just checked and it's on the list again.
Come on, folks, there are still lots of red links. If you're asking questions on the forum that could be answered or discussed on the wiki, then add what you learn!
I added a Carb Sync how to for a 2002+
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/CarbSync
I suggest adding some explicit copyright info, for example the Creative Commons "share-alike/wiki" license template (*):
(http://creativecommons.org/images/public/cc-wiki.png) (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/)
Also, since Sanjay will presumably leave Stanford at some point in the future, if the Wiki takes-off, there will come a time when there will be lots of dead links on the Internet and at Google. Some remedies include:
- help John host the Wiki on the existing GSTwins site
- help John make a "http://gstwins.com/wiki" with "url forwarding" (http code 302) to forward requests to the Wiki location (Stanford today, somewhere else tomorrow?)
- create a new domain and website and host the wiki there, away from Stanford
- create a new domain name, e.g. "gs500wiki.com" with CNAME to stanford.edu (needs help from Stanford admin)
- make a domain name now, using an empty website with URL forwarding to Stanford.edu, then later move the wiki from Stanford to its own dedicated website
Plan for success!
(*)Creative Commons is an effort to create copyright-like licenses for online content that are useful, reasonable and manageable.
There are two air filter pages:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Main/AirFilter
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/AirFilter
They are mostly the same, but slightly different. These should probably be merged into one.
Rema, thanks for bringing this up. I added the CC license, though I used the non-commercial version. I'm not sure about commercial vs. non... any opinions?
As far as hosting goes, I'll be here for quite some time (at least another 4 years), so there's no hurry to switch it. However, planning ahead is a good idea.
I'm open to URL forwarding from GSTwins or from another host name, or migration to a new host. Hosting on GSTwins completely would be ideal, but it'll take some setup work from John (though I'd be happy to help out).
EXCELLENT JOB!
I give my permission to use my articles and photos.
- Carb rebuild
- Valve job
- Fork spacers
If anybody feels like he will have enough time to make some useful articles in this wiki using my articles, please don't hesitate. :thumb:
Wiki is down. Not sure why... Trying to sort it out with our student IT services.
Ok back up. Looks like it was dearly missed.
Folks, please add to it. There have been only a few people adding in the last few months. If you spent a fraction of the time adding to the wiki that you do postwhoring...
:icon_lol:
I noticed a minor spelling mistake that might be easy to fix here:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Main/CarburatorPictures
Should be "carburetor" with an "e". I've noticed it spelled correctly in other places though. Keep up the good work refining the WIKI! :thumb:
I think we need Sanjay for renaming a topic, because all the links to it need to be renamed too. If I don't hear from him I'll give it a shot.
I'll be rejetting my '01, so I can put "real" pictures of my carb while I'm at it.
There are two ways, both of which require the same amount of work.
One way is to change the filename on the server, which only I can do. That will make all current links red and broken, and each will have to be fixed.
Alternatively, anyone can just create a new page with the corrected name and copy the text from the old "edit' page to the new one. Same process with the links. Then I'll have to go in and clean out the old page from the server, which I do periodically.
I'm really busy right now with school and finals, so if one of you guys wants to change it, go for it. Otherwise I'll take care of it in a week or so.
Wiki is down again. What's up with Stanford's IT? Should we get professional hosting? I'd put up a few bucks for that.
I need to look into this. Shouldn't be happening...
Anyone talked to John lately? I've been trying to get in touch with him about hosting the wiki on gstwins (perhaps wiki.gstwins.com or similar).
Otherwise we'll put it up on a professional site.
john's alive, but busy with school, finals, work, family, etc. He'll come around when he's able. :thumb:
Fixed!
Turns out there was a bug in one of the visitor statistics counters I use, and whenever the server time hit a certain point (like today and a few weeks ago), it got stuck in an infinite loop (for all you folks who know what that means). The IT guys here were awesome - responded to my email in about 5 minutes and helped me debug it really fast.
So that bug shouldn't be a problem anymore. And so far the server has had 100% uptime, so I don't forsee any problems in the near future. I'll wait until John has some spare time and then we can start moving this thing over to the gstwins site.
edit: typo
Made some page updates! Please check for accuracy! Add anything you feel is important! Make sure you use exclamation marks!
Case Guards! (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/CaseGuards)
Frame Sliders! (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/FrameSliders)
Windshields! (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Windshields)
Tank Protection! (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/TankProtection)
I edited a bunch of crap, some important, some not, and I hope I added some knowledge. I like where its going, but we still need more publicity.
PS. Why did my member information disappear? >:(
Nice work! We definitely need more people adding to it, and more publicity. It's averaging 30-60 visitors per day and 300-600 page views, but it hasn't grown in content as much as I'd hoped in the last few months. Any ideas on how to increase publicity and motivate people?
I'd like it to expand, but I'm not sure how. When I made those changes last night I was a bit drunk. I'll think about it, but it seems like we need more publicity. I'm thinking along the lines of more mentions in normal threads and trying to get our listing raised in the google rankings. Maybe we could troll other forums and link to the wiki whenever a GS500 thread comes up?
I'll tell ya what, you guys make a deal with me to NOT troll sportbikes.com, and I'll promote it. I am a moderator over there, and I am sure I can get some publicity for you :)
Haha, thanks. I was thinking troll more along the lines of just watching any other bike forums we frequent and tossing in a link here or there. I used to hang out at TMW and Superbikez but haven't been there in a while since the spelling and grammar make my head hurt.
Well from the site statistics, there are a lot of new people visiting every day. Many go back, and many do not. That probably comes from which content they're interested in - lots of info on exhausts, but not much on maintenance or troubleshooting.
Also, new forum members are also learning about the wiki before posting. There's been a welcome decrease in "what aftermarket exhaust can i put on" posts, which usually end up tarding. So that's a good thing.
I do see people on other forums ask questions about their GS500, where it's obvious they don't know about this forum. Usually, they get directed here in the first few replies, so that's good. I also see hits from unrelated forums, where our wiki is being used as an example.
But if you guys want to get the word out on other forums, more power to ya. That'll convince even more people that the GS has great support from its riders, and increase site traffic. In the meantime, I'll work more on getting the massive rejetting page done :thumb:
-Updated the handlebar section.
This wiki sure is becoming quite the eclectic collection of GS stuff.
If only we could get some pics from the UK GS site. They had some wild bikes 8)
I hadn't looked at the wiki in a while, and I did today... I'm blown away by all the info there now!    :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
I put in a bit more time tonight. What we need most (in my opinion) is a massive effort on the rejetting and other carb related pages. No one wants to get started because its so complicated, but we really need one. It would be really handy since everyone needs to fool around with their carbs at some point and we could direct a lot of noob inquiries there. Could someone who really knows a lot about carbs please step up and compile everything you can think of? I've done some work on mine before but I certainly am not good enough at it to write a detailed page.
I'm working on the rejetting stuff. Trying to compile info and especially pictures from different posts/pages. Also, now that I have both kinds of carbs, and neither are rejetted, I'm considering making a Kerry-style video. Probably wouldn't happen for several months, though...
Anyone who wants to start filling in pieces of the rejetting pages, please do!
What I'd like regarding rejetting is the troubleshooting. The factory pro rejetting page is nice, but it's not quite clear enough to me "if A happens then B, if C happens then D" For example...
If you blip the throttle at idle and it hangs .....
If it backfires when applying throttle with no load ....
If it backfires when applying throttle under load...
If it backfires releasing the throttle...
If it bogs when you do X ...
If the engine stalls when you turn on the choke...
I only ask because I'm going to be doing this stuff soon. My rebuilt GS doesn't run as well as my other GS which has never been apart. :)
I like the ideas for rejetting troubleshooting. For a lot of people unfamiliar with how carbs work, it will make tuning much less painful.
Also, we've had some bad vandalism. One time someone deleted the home page, and another time the same person deleted it and wrote some bad stuff. It was restored by others in a matter of hours, but still, not good. I checked the IP address and fortunately it's not a forum member. I could lock it, but I honestly think that if vandalism is quickly fixed, the person doing it will lose interest. So we'll just keep an eye out.
Also, Chuck pointed out that www.wiki.gs is available for sale. I'd rather tie it to gstwins (something like wiki.gstwins.com) but I like wiki.gs as well. Any thoughts, folks? Thanks Chuck. :thumb:
I think tying to gstwins would be best since the wiki info largely comes from the forums and since I like the idea of gstwins being the biggest gs500 site online. I don't know much about website design and maintenance so maybe it wouldn't work for John to have it incorporated into gstwins, but if possible, I'd like that a bit more.
Thanks for hosting it yourself for the time being. Sanjay is the man!
Does anyone have any information on headlight conversions?
I know the re-jetting page may take some time to iron out, but it'd be cool to have some insight on Buell headlight conversions, etc
I don't, but someone who has converted from an F to an E might. Alpha?

its a bit of a no brainer really, get your new headlight, remove your old one, put on the new one connect it and got.
you'll find most bikes have the same bulb connections so you won't even have to modify the wiring,
Awesome page!
Can you guys owners of gstwin.com add a subDomain 'wiki.gstwin.com' with forwarding to 'http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500' ? It's really easy to do via the hosting control panel (go to Admin/Domains/Add Subdomain/Forward to, or I can help.).
That will GREATLY reduce pains to type that long wiki URL. I am recently contributing a lot to Wiki (from different PCs) and have to go to this forum to fish out the Wiki URL all the time. Royal pain.

My Bikes On The Wiki!! Famous At Last . Its The Naked Nexxus lol , As It Goes For Headlight Conversions , I had a few teething Problems, eg the high and low beam was the wrogn way round , part from that , sound as a pound
Congrats! Although anybody can edit the wiki and put their bike on, at least yours has a legit reason. I had to put the 20 pictures of Alpha's bike from the Case Guards section on a separate page.
In Fairness , I Was Going To Do It , coz u had one pic of the nexxus , and i think its the older one , mines slightly different , its a 2007 Motad ,but i was very honored when it i saw it , wait until my other mods are done , and ill laughin :D
 I have an article in the Wiki that I didn't put there...
Me too.
It's a testament to your contributions! I'm still behind on putting all of MikeT's, Pablo's, Kerry's, etc. articles on there. But yeah, you "helpful" people are going to be on there one day, like it or not :)
But seriously, if anyone has objections to their stuff on the wiki, just let me know or you can even remove it yourself.
i found out about this on facebook, great work guys
How on earth did you find it through facebook?
one of the gs pages on it
sorry wrong place to post!!
So you bought a GS500E and want to turn it into a GS500F? There are a few threads about doing that, try using the search bar with words like 'conversion E to F' or 'front fairing addition' or similar. This thread isn't really for specific help, but to point people towards an information source for the GS500 which is similar to wikipedia.
has anyone else noticed it's getting hacked?
example:http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/TailLight
can we put a patcha on it or something to keep this from happening? it's definitely annoying.
Yeah reminor let me know about it yesterday (thanks!), and I hadn't seen it. I'm working on a fix. In the meantime, if you see random crap on there, just click on 'edit' at the top of the page and delete it.
Edit: I think I fixed it by fixing the "require an author name" portion (which was broken before). So if the spambots get smarter, I'll have to think of something else. In the meantime, I'd appreciate some help cleaning it up. Go to:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Site/AllRecentChanges (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Site/AllRecentChanges)
And everything modified since October without an author has been spammed. Click on a page, click on 'edit', and delete the spam. Any help by anyone would be appreciated.
I'm going through the pages now. Still a bunch of spam garbage in there.
WTG, keys2heaven....looks as though you took out the garbage in a major way!!! :thumb:
I did some editing myself
What's up with the wiki? It's not saving my posts.
Wanted to add this to the spark plug section
For cold climate (below 5 deg C) .... NGK DPR7EA-9
Standard ............................ NGK DPR8EA-9
For extended high speed riding ...... NGK DPR9EA-9
worked for me but it has been a few months since i added anything
Are you putting in your name or handle? I added that requirement to deal with spam, so if you don't fill it out, it won't save.
Added the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Adjustment procedure http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/ThrottlePositionSensorTPSAdjustment (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/ThrottlePositionSensorTPSAdjustment).
Is the wiki currently hosed? :dunno_white:
All I get now is a Stanford University error message "Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server." :2guns:
I'm getting the same error. Sanjay, did you quit school? :)
Same problem here.I posted this in the forum problem section.I hope our info isn't lost.
I can get to it now.
Same here. Seems like its all better. THANK GOD :icon_mrgreen:
i just want to say thanks a ton for putting together this resource, i learned soo much about my bike from it.
Sanjay -
I ran across your WIKI doing research into the GS. Really great info and I love it. Bravo.
:) :) :) :thumb:
Yeah I quit school for a day and then re-enrolled :) Actually they upgraded some firewall somewhere and didn't set CGI permissions correctly, so the whole thing went down for a bit.
Anyway, glad to see people are using it. It always needs more contributions, though, so when you learn something new, add to it!

It does lead to a valid question though... what happens after you graduate? Is the wiki info backed up somewhere?
So the data is backed up and easily transferable. All you have to do is install PmWiki on any computer anywhere and load the "database" into it, and it'll be fine.
The most obvious choice for a computer is wherever GSTwins is hosted, and just point wiki.gstwins.com to the wiki. This requires some help from John (or perhaps TheGoodGuy?) and access to the site admin. This will hopefully happen eventually, and we can move the whole thing from my school site.
In the meantime, I'm in this for the long haul (PhD in 2010?) so it's not going anywhere.
ahh gotto love the wiki :)
I went to attach some pictures to a new entry and got the error "cannot upload - disk quota reached". Can someone please look into this?
Fixed, I think.

all hail Doctor Sanjay!!! one of the good guys!
thanks for this work .. super helpful!
I have a good hosting site. http://dreamhosters.com I'd be willing to host the wiki after he leaves school.
In other news someone keeps vandalizing this page. I fixed it but can you ban the IP or something?
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Main/Fuel?action=diff
I just went in and edited the headlight aiming instructions. The previous instructions were pretty bad, and left a lot of room for error resulting in a headlight that is too high. I used portions of the text from Kerry's instructions here and from another site that I found a link to in here.
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/AimHeadlight (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/AimHeadlight)
I attached a few files that wound up not working correctly, but I can't remove them. If someone could remove them, that would be great. Right now, they're just taking up space. Here is a list of them:
rear bolt.jpg
rear bolt
horizontal
I also found a few other files that were attached by someone and they don't work as well. they are:
carbsync_side
carbsync_top
visegrips
It looks like they made the same mistake as me by not adding the file extension to the images they attached such as .jpg .
Thanks guys!
New to forum and found wiki while exploring. Its pretty awesome! Looking forward to learning more about my bike.
Did you know you can order the K&N lunchbox air filter from Amazon.com now? I ordered one today, it was $34.11, and they give free shipping. Can someone add that to the Wiki please?
I love the Wiki !
You add it! That's the whole point - anybody can add to it. Just click edit at the top of the air filter page.

Yup, that was addressed in my post a few days ago when I mentioned you can get it from AJUSA for $34.11 as well with free shipping. :thumb:
Got it 18 hours after I ordered it as well!!!
I was on the Wiki at lunch time to day and couldn't get the wiring diagrams to come up.Anybody know what's going on?My G/F claims she got a virus from the GS Wiki, but I ain't to sure I believe that.
All of them came up for me except the US EK model, where the imageshack hosting link has expired. I don't think you can get a virus from it, but more details would be helpful.

That was the one I was looking for US EK.The virus I'm pretty sure my G/F picked up some where else.It starts as soon as the operating system boots.Avast antivirus blocked it and notified it as being a worm.It flashes the notifier so fast I can't get any detail.I'm running scans now but not picking it up. :dunno_white:
If you don't have any luck with getting rid of your worm, download AVG antivirus. It's free and it works great. It has cought a bunch of bugs trying to penetrate my system. I've never had a problem. It updates it's virus definitions everyday. :)

Avast updates every few hours and has a pop up plus a voice command telling you that it has updated the definitions.Program updates are displayed in a pop up that's a different color and a voice command lets you know there's a program update.Avast caught the worm and notified by a pop up and a voice command.I really like the program. My G/F get's virus's because she frequently go's to crap sites to by cheap junk. There she usually picks up a virus or she opens an unknown email from an unknown sender. Then I have to clean up the mess.I've already had to replace hardware because of her. :icon_rolleyes:
The Wiki is timing out when I attempt to update it.
I would like to add the following three notes to the bottom of the oil change thread.
# Removal of old crush washer: Grab the old crush washer using a pair of channel lock pliers, and hold the bolt with a wrench. Twist the old crush washer off.
# Alternative removal of old crush washer. Use a cold chisel and gently tap it down using a hammer on the aluminum washer at the 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 position. Tap hard enough to go through the aluminum, but not hard enough to damage the bolt. Be careful of the threads on the bolt.
# If you have a fairing (GS500F), use a socket set with two extenders when removing oil filter bolts. It will make it easy to reach inside.
Thank you!
Hi,
I made contribution to Wiki by adding article of handguards.
You can find it under "Upgrades".
Looks like "Upgrades" pages "Paint" and "Powdercoating" dont have anything, not even in history. Should they be removed completely?
I will write new article about waterproof GPS mountcase, as soon as I get mine done 8)
Oh come on... Please try to get Wiki on better server
I was just trying to add article about my cool waterproof GPS mountcase and it died! And slow too often...
Ah! Got it done, finally...
Check it out:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/GPSMountcaseWaterproof
I just want to thank everyone that contributed to making that page possible. Its absolutely amazing. Hopefully this winter i'll be doing some of the mods shown on the page and I'll bring out the nikon d40 for some good quality pics to add!
Wiki giving error:
"Disk quota exceeded"
Fix please?
I've also been having issues editing the wiki.
Seems the Wicki has come under atytack by evil Spambots!!! :technical:
I have asked Sanjay to send me the wiki files to me (he hasnt done it yet) so i can host it part of GStwins.

The wiki has been under attack, and this is how to fix it if anyone wants to delete some spam.

1.
Go to the Wiki - "recent changes" page to see what has recently been spammed.
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Site/AllRecentChanges (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Site/AllRecentChanges)
2.
For example, one of the recent spam atrocities:
Troubleshooting.NeutralLight . . . January 11, 2009, at 03:32 PM by TestName: JzUIywTvQGf
click the text "Troubleshooting.NeutralLight" that is a link to that page.
3.
Then , on the top of the Troubleshooting.NeutralLight page, click the "History" tab.
4.
Then, scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the page. That is the last time there was any real content that was not spam. It reads:

Restore
Hit the next to last "Restore." This will take you to an Edit page, but it will have already filled in all the restored text.
If you hit the very last "Restore", you will restore it to the nothing that it was before Sanjay created it. If you hit the second to last restore, that restores it from the 2008 edit to the 2006 original.
5.
Now we are on this edit page. Immediately below the edit box, you type the "Summary:" of your edit, "stoopid spam" or something.
6.
below "Summary:" is "Author:". This is you. You type in your name or your ID or your CB handle or whatever, and then whenever anyone looks at these edits, they will see that it was YOU who saved the day.
7.
Click "Save"
8.
Collect the admiration of your peers, the lust of the women, the bacon off the top of the meat loaf. Huzzah! The day is yours!
the wiki is in the process of being transferred over. So all that spam will soon hopefully be history.
We need our own spammer/hacker type person to make them wish they'd never touched a keyboard  >:(
Hi, Sanjay:
Thanks for the good work. I just wanted to throw-in some info about mileage. My 1994 GS 500 E is averaging 60-62 mpg in suburban commuting and "blow the stink off" hour-long rides. (Cobra F-1r muffler on stock headers with K&N filter in stock airbox) I would consider my riding style as "riding normally". I don't always baby it but I don't beat it either. I do like being in one piece and want to stay that way. I took it on a camping trip last summer and tried to wring every ounce of mileage out of it and got 67. I would say folks who are getting 50 or less are revving the hell out of it, as I frequently take it up to 9,000 when no one's around, that pipe screams. I think you should throw-in a comment about the GS 500's reputation as having an almost bullet-proof engine and gearbox. That's half the reason I bought it! It is pretty flat in the 5000-6000 rpm range which sent me on a search for better exhaust systems.
Your exhaust page is excellent. I made a few edits there as I just went shopping for one. I found out that some things have changed as to price and availability since you wrote it so I made edits to reflect that. I promise you my changes are accurate as of last week.

However, if it is being hosted via PmWiki (http://www.pmwiki.org/) then we will have similar trouble keeping out the bad guys. I'd highly recommend that we migrate to MediaWiki (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki), although from my understanding the server does not have PHP 5 installed (yet?).
