>:(
I'd like to go, can't make the first or the last weekend of June, any of the middle three weekends and I'll go...
I soulh be able to go. but not the weekend of the 25th, it's my sons birthday
Hey guys, I will be at the Gap June 29-31. I already have a chalet with the family in Gatlinburg the prior Wednesday through Saturday, and I plan to stay until Sunday to have more time at the Gap. I'd love to get a group together for that weekend if anyone is interested!
I'll be drivin' over to the gap from G-burg, and I'll be bringin' my Harley-riding brother-in-law with. I'll be there with or without you all, but I'd love to see a collection of GS's on killboy again! :thumb:
I'm down RangerB. Any date is good for me, provided I have a few weeks notice.
looking go so far, were is every one else that was there...????
Man I would LOVE to but an $800 ticket back to the states is just a bit much.
Take pics
Nick
man were you at... well theres one guess be safe man
I'm definitly taking 1 or more trips down this summer. Right now I can in no way say when exactly, but probably mid-late summer & fall.
FYI: harborfreight.com sells 4' x 8' open trailers for around $280 shipped. Throw down some plywood, eyebolts, straps & you got a great bike hauler.
As long as I don't have Summer Classes I'm in. :thumb: Oh and I have a bike.

im in if its primarily over a weekend. i cant do anything during the week. seems anywhere along 95 in NC would be the best rally point. i cant w8 :thumb:
I am definitely interested. I've never riden the Dragon but have been wanting to for quite some time.
Hey all, I was glancing at Rich's picture at the top of the page, and I realized that the Sunday of that weekend will be the aniversary of Rich "Phaedrus"s passing. I hate to sound cliche', but we should dedicate that day's ride to Rich. Not just at the Gap, but for everyone that day. I don't know. What do you guys think? Where ever you are, go out and ride that day for Rich.
I'm in if I can get it off work. I only work on fri.-sat.-and sunday nights.

and I'll propably bring friends.
Keep it up!!! The more the merrier!! C'mon people, there's plenty of time to save money, arrange vacation time, buy a motorcycle if needed. Be there!
Hell, if you start now, you could probably walk there with plenty of time! :icon_lol:
yea what he said.
i will also be bringing a few buddys as well
OK, I went to tailofthedragon.com and e-mailed info on our "rally" to them to add to their calendar. I made the invite for any Suzuki GS model, but specifically the GS500, GS500E, and GS500F models. I also provided links to gstwin.com, the board, and specifically this thread so that other non-members that happen across that info will be directed to our fabulous site.
Now...you guys have to go!! According to my "Roll Call 2007" thread, there are at least 57 active members / lurkers on this board. We should be able to muster more than the five we had last year. C'mon everyone! Lets get to the Dragon!
I dont know if I'll be able to make it, I think I'll have class.
-Ash
You know I would totally love to make it out there, and especially tard up The Dragon, but I have summer school :(
I'll be making an apperance to the 'gap' this season and i'll try and make it during those dates!
Hey guys I live in Pigeon Forge and manage a music theater here. If anyone wants to come to the show while they are here let me know. I can also get discounts on accomodations and attraction tickets. The theater's website is www.smithfamilytheater.com. Let me know if I can help. Hopefully I will have a bike by then and can participate in the ride.
i will be up there this coming weekend, may 19- 21th
latter
bump
BTW, our "rally" is now on the tailofthedragon.com (http://tailofthedragon.com) website at

Check it out!!
I'm out. for now. I am working on Alabama's title laws.
Well, with enough advance notice, I can take a few days off.. but please, please, please.. pick a date, and stick with it. Cuz if I use vacation days for it, and it falls through, I'm gonna be pissed out of my gourd. Also.. where we staying at? I have no luggage for the GS.. so I'll probably throw 2 pairs of jeans, some boxers, socks, and 3 tshirts into a backpack and throw it on the tail.
Well, for Wednesday through Saturday, my in-laws already have a chalet paid for ...I'm definitely going. My wife and I are planning to either get a room in G'burg on Saturday night, or we're going to stay local around the gap somewhere. I told her I'll sleep in our van if I have to, but I'm going!! :thumb:
I will see if I can make it. As long as I can get off from work. Not sure how they are viewing it being near July 4th.
Not sure which bike I will bring. Hopefully I will have the 92 completed. I probably will trailer so I might even bring both.

It's looking doubtful. Not that I can't make it (probably unless they send me somewhere for work), but I don't know if I'll survive it. My skillz are pretty rusty with the carb problems and moving. I haven't been able to ride much. I don't think the dragon takes kindly to teh noob skillz.
c'mon man, we're better guys than that. The Gap is a road, not a track. People that have problems on the gap are due to driving beyond their capabilities. No one will make you go too fast, and we spend more time on area roads than on the gap anyway. There are tons of wonderful roads in that area besides the gap, and most are less busy!! :thumb:
yea us-28 is even better and almost zero traffic,
Unless you go during the week, Deal's on the weekend is too crowded to go too fast. Heck, last time I was there, some squid was try to drag a knee in every corner where he was slowing down to 20mph for the turns. I rode mostly with one hand folllowing the jerk. The Cherohala (sp?) was more fun but the surface was not that good. There are better less known twisties than Deal's if you want to push it.

I took the tail to go to tenn.in my mini van last weekend. I can say that it scared me, I saw five crashes in the one hour i was on the road mostly coused by goldwings I'm not sure why those guys would go to the tail.
Ok think of it they have 750-900lb. bikes they are trying to wip in and out for 11 miles that has to be hard. They don't want to slow down and let the sport biike pass, it makes them feel old or something.
I'll be out there but everyone be carefull. Stay in your lane

So, does that mean you'll be at the rally?
dgyver
it really depends on the week end, last weekend wasn't all that bad.
I might try to make it, depending on how my schedule looks. It's a considerable drive for me, so I don't know yet.
Count me in for sure :thumb:
If its a sunday, im in. Anyone coming in thru Asheville, let me know, we can meet up at my place, its right off 40. Bathroom break, lol.
i really want to head that way......my room mate and i may just do that
Alright! Now we're gettin' somewhere. We only need 20 or 30 more people to go!! :thumb:
I can probablly get a few of my non-GS friends to come too.
I checked at my PT job and 2 people are going to be on vacation that Sunday. I am still going to see if I can get off that whole weekend. My g/f may join me on the 97, if I get the 92 finished enough to ride.
Right now, it's going to be me on my GS, my brother-in-law on his Sportster, my cousin on his Nighttrain, and his buddy on his soft tail. I'm coming over from Gatlinburg Saturday AM and staying in Fontana until Sunday.
I'm officially out. I'm going to LA for at least 2 weeks, and perhaps 3.5 months. It's overlapping the Gap trip.

I am out. Not a good time being the weekend before the 4th, others had vacations already planned.
Bump, c'mon...time's running out.
what state is it in?
NC and TN I think it's easier to get to from the nc side, just depends on how your coming.
Bunch of stupid questions:
1) Where are we meeting?
2) What time are we meeting?
3) Whole weekend thing or one day? If so, what are we going to do other than ride the dragon?
4) Hotels suggestions or group camp-out?
Those are good questions.
I do not care where we meet.
I would like to ride 28, the parkway is also nice. There are many good roads around here we could 28 and the Dragon are good to ride back and forth, we could also do the parkway from cherokee to bervard then take 64 into cashiers and Highlands, back down to franklin and hit 28 again which would take us back out to the dragon. I'll get on Mapquest and get some more Ideas.
Group camping would be fun and we could all get to know eachother but might take up a lot of time and space but I'm cool with whatever. there are hotels close to the dragon but they might be booked already, Bryson 30min, Cherokee 45min, and Sylva hour are all on the NC side and nice rides. On the TN. side its about the same distance I think.
I live in Sylva and have a garage if it's needed. The girl and kids will be gone so my house is open.
I'm good doing what ever!! I just want to RIDE!!!

1. deals gap resort
2. when you get there on friday/sat
3. the whole week end
4 camp right at the deals gap resort, at the back near the showers (as is is more open and pleany of room)
www.dealsgap.com for the resort that i'm talking about, now this is were i have always stayed and have never had a problem, but if some else has a idea please say so so we can get this final
alright, so I tried to get Mapquest directions and couldn't get the Parkway. I did find a road that I had not herd of before 215, it runs between the parkway in Haywood county and 64 in Transylania county. This ride would be about 4.5 - 5 hours, passes the highest point of the Blue Ridge parkway, tight twisties most of the ride, minimal highway travel, Extremly low traffic, great views, mostly perfect roads, and plenty of good stopping points.
On my drive today I took note of the roads,
1-10 1 being striaght 10 being the Dragon
The Blue Ridge Parkway: 7 the whole time
215: 8 at the begining, 3 for a few miles, 9 at the end
64: 7 mostly, 8 at times
28: 5 at the begining, strong 9 at the end
129: 6 at the begining, and then you hit the Dragon!
1-10 1 being bad "pot holes ect." 10 being perfect
The Blue Ridge Parkway: 10 mostly several dark tunnels, no gravel spoted , more bikes then cars, light traffic
215: 7 rougher textured pavenemt but in good shape, one turn with gravel 3 cars on 17 miles
64: 6-8 few bad spots-constuction spots not worked on weekends, little grave at spots, med-light traffic
28: not recently traveled 7-8 most of the times I've been out light traffic
129: 10 most of the time, very little traffic until the Dragon heavy traffic on the good part "sucked"
Sence the R6 club and other did their Television show there it has been pack every weekend, early moring is the best time to ride "as far as I know."
I thought I would post this as an option and awnser to GeeP, I will not in any way be upset if noone wants to do it. But I think it would be a fun ride.
Heavy traffic sucks, we can ride the Dragon until it gets packed and then go out on our own, if you guys would like.
Hope this was helpful!
i would use google maps as they have the resort on there maps were as the others don't.
search
deals gap resort
and it will be the top one, then get directions and then the from address and boom
what time is every one showing up? i'm shooting for friday mid day.
should be in my new ride tuging the bike.

hell that reminds me i got to put that damn rear brake arm on. ha ha ha life on the edge is great. who needs a rear brake
I might be able to meet up friday night around dinner time. get off at 5 and will take about two hours to get there from work.
Is anyone coming up from the Southeast? I'll be on I-59 the majority of the way.
-Ash
For those that can get there early Friday, my cousin will be here Friday only, and we're planning a ride out of Gatlinburg. Details to follow. My brother-in-law and I will meet with you all at the gap on Sat. AM.
i just got Friday off so I'm shooting for a pre noon arrival

o yea the only thing left to do now is heat and bend that damn brake tourqe arm. rode last week with out it :o to test but had to be sure i didn't use it. the tires are scrubed in now so yep get that done tomarrow and ye haw O0
I need to get my bike registered and get some new rubber front and rear. Other then that, I need to talk to my teachers and boss and hope I can go.

parkway near the Dragon

215 I really want to ride this road!
I went to Skyuka Mountain today. The roads turn back over theirselfs.I think I made it to 30mph before I had to brake hard for a turn. Most of the grade is 9-12%.Coming down you feel like you're going to flip over.Once you're at the top,you can see the truck stop near my home,20 miles away. Lovely 2 hour round trip.I went the long way. ;)
i've never been on 215 or to the highest elavation on the park way, ummm i wonder
well hey that brings a thought.... what should the ride plan be or worry about that latter.
I've got one trip map that would go in a big circle and hit these roads. We can decide to go or not when we see what the Dragon Traffic looks like mid day. either way I can't what!
HEY! I just got myself set up on the forum. I'm in Asheville, NC, and will be headed up to the dragon on Saturday morning for a day of hanign out and riding. Anyone in the area or who will be passing thru that day? We could meet up and head up there from AVL.
I gave the ride route some thought. Last year we did the Cherohala...see what you think of this idea...
http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/upload/trails2005.pdf
If you check this map, you can see all the roads I'm talking about.
I'll be comin' from Gatlinburg across Little River Road, North on 73, then west on 321 to Foothills Parkway, and across to 129. I'm riding down the Dragon to meet with you all at the resort. Last year we met up there at 10:00 AM. That would be a great time again. If you're interested, we could take 28 east to 19 north all the way in to Cherokee(a good place to lunch and fuel up), and finally back up Newfound Gap Road over the mountains through the park to complete the loop. It takes about an hour to get from G'burg to the Crossroads of Time, so I anticipate the whole loop to take about four hours, not including stops. All those roads are good afaik (the only road I haven't ridden is 19). They won't be as busy as the dragon, and by the time the group got back to 129 it would be in the afternoon and maybe a little less traffic...but probably not.
What do you all think? Anyone else have any ideas? I just know that we've been throwing around random ideas, so this is a little more concrete.
I'm counting down...
feedback...
the main thing i want to do is get on to 28 and go to franklin (i think it is) that was the best road and it was raining. silly me i was trying to drag a nee, :cookoo: that changed soo after i slid the rear for about 10 feet.
dude i'm good for any thing, the only thing i need to stop for is bathroom and water... and maybe gas i should avg 200 miles per tank... no what i got the 14T sprocket on so make that 170.
as for the dragon it self early moring and late afternoon are the best day time riding there... but the real fun is at night
and i hope that the blind test for the rear brake tq arm is right as i bent the shaZam! out of it easly with the 80 ton press as work. i guess a hammer will fine tune it.
I don't think you'll get even 170 If you go to 28, I'm there.
Newfound gap road is pretty but extremly packed. I was on it to go to Cades Cove two weeks ago never got over 30mph
We have two good rides set out that both pass the Dragon, very cool. One is very twisty and very little traffic the other is twisty at parts (I've never been to the Foothills Parkway but It looks like a calm ride.)
I personaly like twisty roads and very little traffic, Lets find more low traffic curvy roads. Thats why most of you guys are coming.
I've been talking to locals tring to find the best roads in the area. so far I have posted the best ones I know of.

Love Cades Cove.Hiked the mountain one summer in the middle of july.Learned that bears like to play after dark. They got on of our packs that was hung up between 2 trees to keep them out.We lost some of our food before we scared them off. What fun.
Crucialval i was talking about mpg not mph :thumb: thats what i avg at the gap (better than my hwy mpg odd)
I only get 150 to a tank around here and when I'm on it hard it get worse. I knew what you were saying, maybe my bike is not getting good mileage.
yea, i kid not about that i use to get 300 per tank before i rejeted then it droped to about 250 but any way back on topic,

If you have time ride about 3-4 hours and want good twisties follow this route. 441-New found gap road toward Cherrokee This road is not one of my favorite, Fill gas in cherokee, turn around a go back down 411 about 2 miles look for the Blue Bidge Parkway on your right. Perfect road very twisty, Ride, Ride, Ride turn around and go back when your ready.

Blue Ridge Parkway is fairly smooth from the arboretum to Cherokee, but arboretum to Mt.Mitchell,is rough as hell.Spend most of the time dodging pot holes.

hell yea dude, is that the pcv one that i saw a thread on? i plan to try to make one as well, but i will have it all like last time... also i will have tools and what not let me know what i need to bring and i most likely got it.
if any one has any incite on how to replace gauge lights i will be ever so grateful. my last trip there i have to double back to get my wallet. and in the process lets say there was some maneuvers on the interstate that were not so legal and the bike took the toll for that with lots of vibration
Yeah, I read that thread and made one up. I've used it a couple of times with different cameras. With a digital camera it's very shaky in the upper rpms, but with an actual video camera with image stabilization, it works well enough. I used it with my Sony Cybershot on a bike ride recently on a blast down a runway, and when I got up in my RPMs you could make out other bikes and the runway, but it the vibrations were crazy.

They won't be as busy as the dragon, and by the time the group got back to 129 it would be in the afternoon and maybe a little less traffic...but probably not."
What do you all think? Anyone else have any ideas? I just know that we've been throwing around random ideas, so this is a little more concrete.
as for camping i highly suggest deals gap resort, (dealsgap.com) as thats what i have done every time, but hell any thing is good thats jsut my sugestion and its right there at the gap.
count down is t-minus 4 days
How much is camping at the resort?
10:am is good as any time would be.
I would rather not ride New Found Gap it sucks I just did it a couple weeks ago the road sucks, the traffic sucks and did I say the traffic sucks. I like more twisties, and there a lot better roads IMO.
If the majority goes that way than I'll follow.
I'll most likely be out Fri. evening If anyone wants to hook up then.
i should be there by friday... at i guessing 12pm
camping is like 12$ for the week end, but last time i forgot to pay and went into pay and the girl said how long have you been here? i said 3 nights she said well dont worry about it have a good trip home. and off i went.
yea i'm also more into twistys my self as well
Hey guys, I just suggested that route because it's a great road (even if there's traffic), and it's a loop, so we never have to re-ride a road. But, as always, I'm open to suggestions. I just didn't want to waste prime riding time discussing what roads we should take :cookoo:. If anyone has a plan, I'm for it.
I'm leaving tomorrow morning for G'burg. I don't know If I'll be able to check the board again before Sat. so if you don't hear from me...see you at 10:00 AM at the resort!!
I will be there saturday around 11 or 12, If I make it.
I was thinking you guys from out of town would like to see the best these mountains had to offer. This route is also a round trip and about the same amount of time. I really would like to ride these roads, I've only hit hwy215 in a car, but I posted pics of the road earlier in this thread. Also I thought it would be cool to get a group pic at the highest point on the parkway. I know Rangerbrown wanted to hit Hwy28 and this trip will pass through there at the end. " If you haven't Been to 28, you realy need to. There are more good road out there but the local riders have all told me to ride these.
Hell If you guys would like we could ride both! I just want to meet and ride with these crazy GS people. :thumb:
Even though I live in the area I think I'm going to camp just to be with the croud.

alright, so I tried to get Mapquest directions and couldn't get the Parkway.
Oramac I live about 45 min from G'burg and have a shop full of tools, If you need anything let me know. That goes for anyone else also.

If camping and rooms are full let me know I have a big yard 45mins from the dragon. The whole family will be gone for the week end.
Hey, looks like I'm a no go. The tires I ordered and payed extra for shipping are not set to arrive until NEXT week. I am SO FREAKING MAD!!! The company www.tiresunlimited.com sent me an e-mail saying they were shipped last Saturday and yesterday I called and they told me they should arrive today. I get home after work and find no tires waiting for me. Today UPS sends me an e-mail saying my tires have just been shipped and are set to arrive 7-2-07. Tomorrow morning I'm calling and raising hell, I could of ordered my tires else where and had them on by now!!!!
Their is a slim chance I still might make it but I dunno how, maybe on my bald rear and semi dry rotted front. I doubt it tho.
-Ash
can you cancel the order and go to a local shop? I oredered jetts, K&N, and barends and they aren't going to be here untill next week
More bad news, I just got a voice mail from Oramac. He had a death in the family and is headed back home. He asked that I pass along this information.
-Ash

Hey all,
I'm back home now (10:45 PM, Friday). I got to Gatlinburg on Tuesday with my wife and daughter. We got to hang out, shop, swim, and stayed in a hotel on the main drag. Wednesday, however, was not as nice. We checked out of the hotel, and had to kill six hours before the rest of the family could make it and we could check in to our cabin. It was about six o'clock on Wednesday before I even unloaded my bike, then we cooked out, played some pool, and spent some family time figuring that I'd have plenty of time to ride in the coming days. Then the phone call. About 11:00 PM, my mother calls me from Indianapolis to let me know that my grandmother passed away. I can't express what that woman has meant to me, or the way she's influenced my life. Before my vacation really began, it was over.
We stayed through Thursday, packed up that night, and we hit the road before seven o'clock Friday morning. I got to ride my bike about two hours total.
Now I'm back home just as you all are getting ready to ride. I hope you all stay safe, keep the rubber side down, and give those roads hell for me this weekend! :thumb:
Again, sorry I couldn't be there with you all, but this couldn't be avoided.
Rodney / oramac
I wish i didnt live in the Uk ! , one of those pics just looked like knee down :(
Have fun!
Well My mom flipped her Rodeo, she not hurt to bad but wont be able to baby sit for me. I so close but may still not be able to go. I might just have to take the car up just to meet everyone. this sucks >:(
Left an hour late tryin to get kids to my mother's.I ran into a wreck on I-26 in The edge of Asheville.I sat in tragic for an hour.It was looking like it would be 2pm or later before I'd make it to Deals Gap,so I just hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and rode around with the park rangers. It was slow and sprinkled rained off and on.Nice sites and beautiful women.
Sorry I couldnt make it, just now really riding again after the almost heart attack. Gonna need a "Jet Kit" put in soon, lol
I just got back home from the ride, it was great! I got a late start, dut hit the dragon about noon, wow it was My first time on the bike. Hit my shoe a few times I've got no more chicken stripe. We rode the parkway and 215, It was really injoyable hope some of you guys get to come out again!! Anytime anyone wants to hit the Dragon let me know I'll be there.
The end of the day sucked though I snapped my clutch cable. The gs will pop a wheelie.
good to be home, but my knee is killing me. not sure what i did but its really blue and tender. may have drug it too much or i could just be geting old :icon_rolleyes:
So how was the trip?!? Any rain? Any pics?
-Ash
Trip was great, I don't think anyone took pics though. no rain, on us anyway
I was leaving Mount Mitchell and picked up some light rain for a few miles. No biggee, just slowed down. :thumb:
yea i forgot the cam, so i guess we need to figure another date for a meet. i'm thinking next month?????
We are planning a meet in Asheville sometime in aug. but I'm going go be back on the dragon soon. you guys let me know
Yeah the meet is planned for Aug 18th, Brevard RD exit off I-26, near the 40 interchange and near the parkway. We could do it as a Dragon day if yall want, Ive been trying to get us some shirts made for the new GSRCD(GS Riders Carolina Division) Ben2Go and I are working on. If yall want to do the meet, find my thread in the meet/greet section and let me know so I can get a head count. If we do the Dragon Im gonna change the location of the meet up to somewhere closer to it like between Maggie Valley or Waynesville or Sylva and let Crucival be our lead bike to the Dragon. If I can get the shirts together for the ride, Id like to have the shirts read Charter Member on the back for those at the fist GSRCD meetiing. Let me know soon!!!!!
I'm hoping to have my bike fixed from my wreck in the next week.I'll be ready to ride again.
Need a hand let me know, im off till Monday, though my wife thinks im off everyday :icon_rolleyes:
I just got my forks sorted out.The front brake is scrubbing a little.I have a 95 Katana front end that was going on my custom.I may put seals in it and install it on my daily rider.Gives me an excuse to buy a GSXR front end for my custom.I just need to locate a strieght front wheel.Mine is useable, but if it was put on a stand and checked,it'd be out of tolerance.
Hey guys, I talked to the guy from KillBoy he said he should have pics of us in about one more week. He said they try to get every rider.
I may be riding this weekend at the Dragon, Parkway and 28 If the weather looks good. you are all wellcome, let me know if you guys want to met up. One of my friends is coming from in town, he's a better rider then me so I'm going to try to pick up a few pionters.

I found a new clutch cable out in Raleigh so when my friend comes out fri. he'll bring it out. so I'll be riding. :thumb:
ye haw :icon_twisted:
I found a great road near my house I call the Demons Tounge. Its shorter than the Dragon, but a good trainer fo it. No guard rails, drop offs everywhere, tight turns with a nice rest straight in th middle. Not a lot of traffic, rode it 4 times today, saw 2 cars and 3 bikes. Its highway 191 (Pisgah Hwy) out of the West Asheville/Candler area and meets the Parkway near Mt. Pisgah. Fu to ride :icon_twisted:

we try to wait up for every one, but ride at your own pace no need to go faster if you dont feel like it or what not you know.
My main reason for wanting to make the deals gap meet was to meet some of the other riders and ride out. :thumb: Always up for making new friends.
Yeah me to, unforunitly I will not be riding the weekend. still no clutch cable I tried calling every dealership from Hendersonville to Senica SC and no luck. I guesss I'll just order one and wait till next weekend to ride.
