Hi, I'm Steve, newly registered although I've been reading posts here since around the beginning of the year. Newbie rider, took MSF beginner last fall with fiance. Been living in sin for 9 years, probably going to break down and get married next year. I'm a Structural Engineer (design bridges so be careful), former USMC, 39 with the mentality of a 15 year old. 97 GS500 is my first bike (fiance has 2001 Nighthawk 250), but had enough sense to take MSF and buy protective gear (crazy not stupid). Currently reside near Columbia, SC and have previously lived all over the SE and a year in El Paso, TX. VT grad--Go Hokies!

Almost forgot, we have an 11 year old green iguana who sort of owns the house (or at least thinks she's in charge).

Hi all, I'm Doug.  I'm 22 years old, and I live in Louisville, Ky.  To fill my days I'm an electrical engineering student...volunteer firefighter/EMT...independent software developer...and I work in an Emergency Room.  Since I'm headed off to medical school in two years I figured I'd get a bike and enjoy the time until then.

I have a 2000 GS500EY that appears to be all stock and I know nothing about maintenance so feel pity for it.  If you're in the area, I'm easy to spot.  Just find the newbie going 10 under the speed limit "lookin' all wobbly" as my fire chief puts it.  Adios...

Ciao, Paisano!

No, I'm not Italian.  I lived in Roma / La Spezia / Firenze for 16 months - but that was 21 years ago.

Don't worry - your English is a lot better than you seem to think it is!  :thumb:

Dario, welcome!

I wish I could speak Italian the way you do English..., as a matter of fact, I do only know 2 sentences in Italian:

1st one is: Una bottiglia di vino rosso, per favore!
and the 2nd one: Una grande bottiglia di vino rosso, per favore!

... but it's enough to survive, I think :nana:

Hey everyone, my name is Jim, I'm from Grimsby (near Hamilton), Ontario  I'm 20 and in 2nd year mechanical engineering at Queen's University. So if you're ever in the Kingston area or Hamilton area give me a shout and as soon as I get new break rotors on my bike we can go out riding.

"made redundant" ... is that a British way of saying "layed off"?

Yes, layed-off / put on the scrap heap / finished / kaputt

And what with most of British industry being closed down and sent off to Malaysia/China/India/Indonesia/Taiwan/Thailand (delete a applicable), there's little chance off getting a secure job in manufacturing in the UK - hence my study of law. Hell - we're almost up to US levels of "injured in an accident? Not your fault? Call us for the compensation you deserve!"

All that only started over here in the last few years.

Another US - UK difference was the other day on a UK Honda Firestorm web-board when I mentioned road islands then realised I don't think the US has road islands (I may be wrong though)

Well I guess i'll go ahead and actually post up now that I have a GS. As you can see from my join date i've been lurking around absorbing everything I can about the GS for a while. I got back down to college this semester and was getting really fed up w/ parking and gas prices so I decided I HAD to get a motorcycle...

Started looking online and in the paper, but i'm on a reaaalllly tight budget since I'm a student only working part time. I had a couple leads on bikes and then some guy randomly calls me and said he heard I was looking for a cheap bike. Said he had a small street bike that needed some work.. a '94 Suzuki 500. So right away I knew it was a GS.. best of all he only wanted $400 for it.

I go to check it out and he thinks the starter is busted, the bars are bent from kids knocking it over in his apt. complex parking lot and it has a few scratches and bumps from being ridden pretty hard for it's 25k miles. He includes a nice helmet and the rest is history.

Ever since i've been bugging all you guys for help!  :thumb:   Srinath's bars should be here soon along w/ my tuned up carbs so it should be running like a top. The starter is fine, I'm not sure why he thought it was busted... A few cosmetic fixer uppers here and there and it should look pretty sharp! I'll be sure to post up some pics here before too long to share.. I think one of the best selling points for the GS is this message board, I don't know what i'd do without all you guys' help!

Hi all. I'm Bev from Australia.
I passed my test about 3 months ago but haven't ridden since.
My husband John has a new Honda vfr800 and we go for rides most weekends with freinds. The vfr is too big and heavy for me to ride, so yesterday, I took delivery of my gs500f. It's blue and I love it.

I'll have to ride around our local streets for a while till I get used to it.
Can't wait to ride to the mountains and enjoy riding by myself.

Are there many woman riding this bike?. I'd love to hear. :)
