GS500F To SV1000S... What Have I Done?!

Well... as of yesterday afternoon I am now the proud but financially drained owner of a new 2003 SV1000S Copper. The bike was provided by Suzuki to the dealer for display during the 2003 Athens Twilite Criterium. The bike was never titled, and had only 1 mile on it (gained during setup and such for the display). It has sat on the dealer floor since then, and Suzuki ended up including a four year full-coverage extended warranty to help hook potential buyers.

I bit.

Man... any other SV1000S owners out there on these forums that has a minute. I feel like I just rode a freakin' rocket home from the dealer and I need suggestions on how to slow down the heart rate before I have a heart attack. This bike is unbelieveable.

I still have the GS500F, and my girlfriend is going to buy it so it will be around when I want to ride it. I still love that bike (especially since it was my first).

Sorry... just wanted to share my proud moment!

congratulations! You must have gotten a screaming deal since the new ones (04) are being cleared out  with full fairings for a song... ;)

they're great bikes. Cycle World did a story on it a few months back called "the best bike you've never heard of" or something like that. Throw some yoshi pipes to unleash the vtwin sound and you'll never look back.

Congrats on your new ride.

It's not the bike that determines the speed, it's your right wrist and it is directly related to your heart rate.  It is possible for any bike to be driven at the speed limit (although I must admit that I've never been able to master that skill)

Hey Pantablo,

What are some other good deals on new sportbikes?  How is the GS500F selling in the States?
1966 160cc     Ducati Jr.
1970 CB160    Honda
1971 650        BSA Lighning Bolt
1980 650SC    Honda Nighthawk
1982 900F       Honda SuperSport
1986 FJ1200    Yamaha
2004 GS500F   Suzuki
2003 ZRX 1200R (Green, of course) kept the GS

In the states? You being in FL? You must be in Iraq, no?

The F has boosted the desirability of the gs500 and given it a much needed shot in the arm. Selling better than ever from my perceptions of seeing them on the street and reading about them here.

Other deals? The sv1000 is the only factory sponsored deal I know of (they're selling them under $6k from what I read) because they didnt sell well. The sv650 sold well but the sv1000 has much competition in the liter vtwin arena. Generally, less desirable bikes that dont sell will be sold at a discount at dealers, particularly if they're 1 or 2 years old new stock.

-Suzuki Bandit 1200's are a super deal and can be bought new for under $6k as well.
-Triumph Speed Four (naked TT600) is a good bike at a sweet price. I was going to buy one for $5600!
-Used Honda SuperHawks are a great bargain too. Same bike 98-04, no changes.

Cant think of any deals on new bikes besides the couple above. Used sportbikes can be had pretty inexpensively (relative), for a low mile slightly damaged bike...

HMMM... I take it they are not advertising these prices.  You just have to go in and bargain with the dealer?

Man, I love that copper color as well. I currently have it as my wallpaper :thumb:

I've thought about moving up to a SV650s, but some people have speculated it is not as big of an upgrade and will leave you wanting for more. I just shutter the thought of going straight to a 1-liter bike like the SV1000s.

BTW, what is the difference in your motorcycle insurance between the two bikes (details please)?

hehe... i just checked with my insurance company.  i pay about $125 for liability only on the gs.  liability only on an sv1000 would be about $215.  full coverage on the same bike is over $1300.

How much did you pay for the SV1000?

I bought my first bike (blue/white GS500F) about 4 months ago and I've been thinking of upgrading to the SV1000.

I originally wanted to get the SV650 but was afraid of if it so I went with the Ninja 250.  The dealer talked me out of then 250 though and that's how I got the GS500F but man am I aching for a bigger bike!  I rode my friends SV650 and it was better but not powerful enough.

Don't get me wrong, I love the GS but since I can't get it over 120 I can't do more than keep up with the traffic on I-95 when there's no jam.
If it ain't yours it's mine...actually, it's all mine!

Hi-T

Good luck bro...  You just about trippled your horspower and only gained 30 pounds of total weight.  Throw in some fuel injection and you are riding a rocket- compared to the GS500.

I recently picked up a SV650s and remember thinking the same thing - "Wow this thing is fast."  That feeling will eventually subside when you learn to ride the bike- but spend some time learning.  I'm sure you can already feel the difference in how it handles, brakes, accelerates...  I have a feeling you don't have all that many miles under your belt- so from rider to rider- just take it easy for a while.

I just checked out your profile.... No speeding  ;)   .  Are you allowed to take personal vehicles on the driving ranges?  If you are, Check out Total Control by Lee Park- it should help you get familiar with all your extra horsies.

Make sure you check out  //svrider.com

Hey dollar95

I lived in So Fla for 25 years.  Traffic rarely goes over 90 on I-95, when it moves at all, and with all the tourists and old farts going 50 in the left lane, even 90 is very risky.  I'm not even factoring in the troopers.

Lucky bugger!  Great choice.  I was looking at an SV about 2 weeks ago.  I'd love for it to be my next bike but I don't know if I can afford the insurance.  Check out http://www.sv1000.zyns.com/ also.  Seems like a good bunch.

Hey all...

I just got back from Cycle World with a buddy who ended up trading in a V-Strom for a great looking Honda Shadow 1100. He got a good deal on trade and the bike fits him better. We parted ways as I headed home. So, there I was, riding down the road at about 75 mph, and I noticed that there was a lot of room for throttle left (and I was in 5th gear). I checked the speedo, noted my speed, and blipped the throttle. Not much, just a little blip. Man... no joke- I was at 85 in the blink of an eye. Unbelieveable!  :thumb:

I haven't gotten final price from my insurance company yet, just a binder, but I'm sure it isn't going to be pretty. I will be shopping around for a better insurance company. Too bad seeing as I have been with them for 18 years, but at least they were honest with me when I got insurance on the GS. They warned me that they don't do motorcycles very well. I'll get a final price from them once underwriting finishes the paperwork. I'll let everyone know.

I'll get those pics up soon. My digital camera is currently with my roommate somewhere in the county while he is working traffic. I'll snag the camera from him before he heads in tomorrow.

Oh... and I made my first add-on purchase. Yep... for a whopping $20.00 I purchased a set of blue aluminum swingarm spools. Phew... it was tough letting go of that $20.00, but it had to be done. Actually, that was step one. I'll be looking at the following, in no particular order, and over a fairly long time frame:

1. Rear seat cowling
2. Rear wheel hugger
3. Fender kit
4. Tank bag
5. Double-bubble screen
6. Helmet (possibly with a custom copper paint scheme)
7. Pipes
8. K&N Filters

I love this bike. I still need to get used to the forward seating position (my hands are sore), but I know that it will come with time. Oh, and Hi-T, unfortunately I couldn't take the bike on the track, but that would be great. There is a race track in Forsyth for law enforcement traning (pursuit and PIT training), but they would drop dead before they would allow a bike on the track. Ah well...

The Buddha

No Idea what he paid... but my local dude has 2 one S and one naked for 5699 and 5999. 2003's in silver. Somehow they didn't sell... probably beginers dont want 1000 cc ... and the advanced ones want the higher HP higher tech I-4's...
Cool.

Hey bikenut!

Yeah, traffic does jam alot but by 7-7:30 PM I feel like I'm the slowest thing out there.

Then you've got the Friday night bike traffic leaving Fudruckers...luckily a couple of the guys have Ninja 250's so I don't feel so bad.

Still love the GS though!

There is a seller on ebay, zgoutlet, that sells blemished Zero Gravity wind screens at a really good deal, usually about half price. I have not seen one yet but everyone that I know that has bought one for their TL has said that it is very hard to find anything wrong with them, unless you really look hard. Usually it is like a few very tiny air bubbles.

If you do decide on going to the track, there are 6 tracks within 4-6 hour drive from you: Road Atlanta, Barber, Lil' Tally, Jennings GP, CMP, Roebling.
