hey guys,

I am interested in getting some ohlins fork spring. I have ohlins on my racing sleds and love them. Ohlins offers fork springs for the GS500E model year 1978-1983. That alone is even before my time. Its old, but i am just wondering if that year would fit My 2004 F model. If not, I need to know any general specifications of front springs i need. They could match something up for. Please let me know.

Thanks.

Stefan.

The 78 - 83 GS500 was a four cylinder bike - I remember because I bought a GS450 (our bikes ancestor) in 1980 in part because the 500 was a lot more expensive - the 450 was (from memory) around 1600 list and I got it with a substantial discount.

I bought a set of Pro-Rate springs cheap-cheap from Lockhart Phillips last year.  They were advertised as being for a Yamaha Radian.  I went to the Progressive Spring website http://www.chaparral-racing.com/ and looked up all the springs needed for my GS and the list also included the Yamaha Radian...same springs both bikes.

I bet you could do the same thing and find that list of bikes on the progressive site that use the same springs as our GSsss....then cross reference with the Ohlin to find any makes that matchup.

My Pro-Rates fit just fine and are working great.

Good Luck

Okay... I did some digging.

The Progressive Suspension part number for the GS500 springs is 11-1128

Free Length: 502mm (19.75")
Outside Diameter: 29mm (1.14")
Spring Rate: .54/.80 (30/45)

Other bikes that use the same part number:

Honda VT500 Ascot  (83-84)
Honda VT500 Shadow (83-84)
Kawasaki Ninja EX500 (94-96)
Kawasaki GPZ500 (94-96)
Kawasaki Ninja 250 (88-97)
Suzuki VS700 Intruder (85-87)
Suzuki GS550E/ES (83-86)
Suzuki GSX550E (83-88)
Yamaha 1100 Virago (86-99)
Yamaha 1000 Virago (84-88)
Yamaha 750 Virago (88-97)
Yamaha 700 Virago (84-87)
Yamaha XJ700X Maxim (85-86)
Yamaha FJ600 (84-85)
Yamaha FZ600 (86-88)
Yamaha SRX600 (86)
Yamaha YX600 Radian (86-90)
Yamaha RZ500 (85)

Progressive lists only one other spring with an outside diameter of 29mm, and it is part number 11-1136, but it is 572mm long and the spring rate is 16/29.  There is on 28mm OD spring, 11-1100 which is 533mm and  the spring rate is 45/70.  There are several 27mm OD springs listed as well, several that are only slightly longer than the 502mm of the correct spring, and may be a possibility, you would just have to cut your spacer more.  I'm not sure if using anything other than a 29mm spring is a good idea though.

Proly.  Ask them if they will accept a return if they don't fit your F...and if they do fit tell them so they can edit their website to include the F model.  It only takes a few minutes to test them so it seems like a win-win situation for everyone.
