Do i need to adjust my idle?

Hey all!

I was wondering if I need to adjust my idle on my GS.  I just got my permit yesterday and have been cruising around in the parking lot and around my neighborhood a bit and when i was riding this morning, after i let it warm up for about 1 minute (was kind of cold, but not bad at all) i took off around my neighborhood. Well i stopped at a light and the darn thing died on me when i was just sitting there! Do i need to let it warm up a bit more?

When i was riding it last night for about 30-45 minutes it still seemed like it had some problems idling. I checked the gas and it had plenty, so me and my friend wil think that the idle is the problem, but i wanted you guys opinion (and instruction on how to fix it?).

A little info about the bike:

Its a 2002, only has 170 miles on it, was left in a garage for a year or two and started every month (or so the previous owner said), and it hasn't been ridden much by me except for yesterday because i just got my permit and gear. So what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance for the replies!

:o I'd get rid of that gas thats been sitting in your tank!

Also run some carb cleaner thru too.

Agree, get rid if the gas.  It might be idle as well, so you can try changing that first, but I'd still get rid of the gas. Oye

I just got a 94.  And I've been experiencing the same problem.
How are you choking your bike?

I usually apply choke progressively until engine fires.  Then keep it on until the engine starts to rev.  After that decrease choke to get rpm at around 2grand and ride off.  When you get to the next light if you notice the rpm's are a little high turn off the choke.

now......once your engine is nice and warm, and it's gonna take a while, put on some leather gloves and adjust the idlle exactly where you want it.

That technique seemed to have fixed most of my "engine dying at a light" problems.

What does everybody else think about this technique?

If your bike has stock jets, it is going to take several minutes before it idles well without the choke so that may be one problem.

Like others say, get rid of that gas if has been in there all those months.
Peek in the tank opening to check for rust in the tank (don't use a match for light! :o) and run some carb cleaner.

In my experience, I frequently play with the idle on a carb'ed bike. If I'm riding in town vs. road, summer vs. winter, etc will affect the idle slightly.

Try adjusting the idle screw (scroll down for picture):

If you still need help I'll see if I have some time tomorrow afternoon. I have all the correct information to get there this time.

I got a GS off a guy who left it in his garage for a couple years. It rode fine for about 170 miles until acting up. That's just enough miles for the rust to start clogging things up.

How do i get that old gas out of there? Just run it until i'm out of gas?

Yeah my bike has stock jets, i'm going to have it rejetted eventually, but i figured i should wait until the first scheduled maintenence before i start doing anything like that. Plus i have no idea how to do it (or if its even possible for one to do it themselves).

Scratch - Hey scratch! Feel free to e-mail me man, maybe we can hook up sometime this weekend. :) shaykai@gmail.com

Hey, I hate creating new threads, so I just continue this one.
I have the same problem with my idle too low. I always set my idle all over at red light, when I set it higher it's too high at next light, if I set it lower it wants to stall.
Carb is good, rebuilt and said to be set. I have no high idle only if I set it high. Otherwise it always wants to die on me.
I never use choke when starting in warm mornings. I just press the starter and idle is right at 1500.
Today it bogged down once at acclerating, I set it to reserve, engine runs well after that, but for the next 10 minutes at the city, my idle died many times. I had to compensate with throttle twists not to let it die. After like 5 miles my idle came back to normal.

I suspect my low rpm fuel is too rich, maybe if I lean it a bit, idle may get higher not to die at red light. My fuel consumption is also higher than I expected. 120 miles and I needed to set it on res. Is it normal?
But how do I set the carb? I have absolutely no info on how the carb in the GS looks like or how to set it. My settings might be off, but I won't pay for a mechanic to set it for me. I want to understand the GS myself.

Hey ubul,
I know on  my bike i go till 200 miles till i hit reserve. I'm not sure other than that:)
Peace

Is it possible the choke is always half way on? How do I check if it's good or not.
