:guns: $95 and a tow later

so yeah, I was coming to a stop already (thankfully) and I feel the back end sorta tug and come out sideways a bit.  Next thing I know I am holding the clutch and have a stalled bike that isn't moving.  I look down to see my chain off the rear sprocket.  Thinking quickly I wave the cars behind me around and dismount.  I dislodge the chain and walk the bike into the nearest driveway.  I couldn't think of anyone that had ramps (I have a truck) so I was stuck calling the tow.

What really sucks is I bought my new chain a couple weeks ago and it's sitting in my room.  I thought it would hold out until I was finished with finals but I guess not.  It wasn't even loose and knocking the swingarm.  I guess it did its final stretch and that was it

It must have surprised the people behind me too because there was a sizeable black stripe on the road

Damn that sucks. Looks like your chain needed some lube too.

How can you live in Cali and have a dirty ass bike?

ramps?  you don't need no stinking ramps.  just get a buddy and lift it!  that's how i got mine home.  get your bike up on the sidewalk or something, then back the truck up to the curb so you don't have to lift it as high.

Andy!! All those neat toys you've got and you neglected the Baby!! For shame, for shame. Now get that new chain on and clean up that Baby...change it's diaper for cryin' out loud. Damn, glad you weren't thrown over the high-side...you got eight left now. Love the Baby G, Canada (Oh Canada!), and this forum.

That's how my project started out.  My chain slipped on my last ride of the season last year.  Kind of messed up the rear sprocket.  So I replaced both sprockets, the chain, rejetted, reringed the pistons, honed the cylinders, replaced gaskets, checked valve clearances and other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Beware, the simplest repair can lead to a garage full of GS parts!

Translation:

Chain skipped. but before threding a new one on, makesure the chain didnt temp bind up in casings and bust sumthing.   it did on mine and i nearly lost my engine cases do to it. as well as cracked 2 gears in tranny, bent shifter shaft and sheared off the clutch pushrod that goes from sprocket cover to the inside of engine.

check your output shaft area closely, look to see if the seal was disturbed, look for fresh seepage at all the seals in that area. you cant replace one half of a case as they are machined together as a unit.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.

As you can see by the wheel, that is where all the lube typically ends up.  It's dirty because it's still rainy here and I don't want to clean it before the rain stops.  I actually commute to school rain or shine.  Unfortuneately, downtown San Jose is not the easiest place to back a truck up to the sidewalk, especially at rush hour ;)

I am hoping nothing happened to the output shaft and sprocket but it jumped off the front sprocket too so I'm just going to have to cross my fingers.  Thanks for the tips on what to check for

This semester has kicked my ass so I have barely had time to do anything.  When I have a moment free, I'm so beat I just want to sit on my ass and either watch tv, cruise the net, or play my guitar

How often do you lube?  I live in Seattle, and my chains don't look like that. ;)  I try to lube every week, but usually do it once every two weeks or so.  No rust on the chains.

It actually came looking like that :nono:

I've just been adjusting as needed and lubing when I can because it has been raining a fair amount.  The other week the weather guy said we're on 160% of average here in SJ.  The lube just flies off and that is why I have the new chain.  I thought I would be fine until the end of finals (next week   ), but I guess I wasn't  :(

I think you got lucky with that one; Nothing was really BADLY broken.... just scratches.

Once, long, long time ago, my dad told me a story about his '72 (I think...) CB350, and a broken chain-link in a far-away galaxy.

The analysis afterwards was, that once the chain link had broken while going backwards, the loose end was whiplashed right through the engine case... good thing that they used more iron to those things back then, they could weld it back together.

I think that he managed to keep the bike up, although he was -as usual- street-racing with his buddies at the time.

He did mention that I should keep an eye on my chains & sprockets more closely than he did... :)

If your having problems with your chain lube flying off, might I recomend maxima's chain wax, it's "fling resistant, special parafifin based, and o-ring chain safe" I use this stuff and it's great, no issues with lube flying off and getting my bike and rims all dirty.

I can squeeze you in between 2 and 6 on Saturday, and after the Doc Wong ride Sunday, after 3.
