We wern't talking performance. We're talking looks.

I'm looking at Yamaha's Euro line, and I'm so jealous! They get all the badass bikes :(

Why is it called the GSR?

The X in GSX-R is supposed to indicate the valve layout on the heads. The R is for race. So basically, this is a 2-valve per cylinder race bike?  :dunno:

Alphamazing

Quote from: AlphaFire X5I like it... but it doesn't have the X in it. No 4 valves per cylinder?

Quote from: AlphaFire X5Holy crap, you're right. The 599 uses the same engine as the F4i.

Since when?  The 599 has always had the engine out of the F3, hence the carbs.  That's why most magazine articles and riders pegged it as overpriced.  It had parts bin suspension along with an aging motor.  Add to that the fact that the SV, FZ6, and Speed 4 were all cheaper and you have one hell of a flop on your hands.  Honda botched it big time

I'm also pretty sure that I read the new forks are only adjustable for preload :(

If you were in the market buying a middleweight naked bike, would you consider a FZ6 naked model if they had it?

Just to add to the sad 599 saga...
The price for 2006 in Canada is $1,200 more than this year!!!!!!  :x All that seems to have been changed are the inverted forks and the gauge cluster is gone electronic - no nice analogue dials. I hope there is more than this to justify the price hike 'cause it just don't make sense. The bike was a tough sell I gather to begin with so do they think that a frikkin' huge price hike is going to start a door crasher sale or something?!?!
What the heck is Honda thinking? :?

who ever buys 599 is buying for the brand name...it's outdated and overpriced by everybody's standards.

What about the 919?  Don't know much about it.

That GSR IS cool.  Did anyone answer the valves per cylinder question?

Anyone have any thoughts on the Kawi 650 twin?  Supposed to come in cheaper than the SV650S.   A naked version would be cool but they already have the Z750 and Z1000.

The Z750 isn't sold here, but the Z750S is. The naked 750 looks WAY better than the faired version, much like the FZ6. If Honda could drop the price on their 599 people would probably buy a lot more of them. It's an awesome looking bike with decent power, but it's just too damn expensive. I mean, hell, a Ducati Monster is cheaper!

What is the deal with moving away from a dial speedo with practially all modern bikes?  It's been pretty well established that digital readouts are much harder to read than traditional needle-and-dial gauges.  Many cars have moved to digital numeric readouts, only to move back to traditional guages, or at least visual indicators rather than numbers.  Aircraft gauges have been innovating in this area for a long time (with digial "tape" displays and marker bugs instead of numbers).

Perhaps the feeling is that your speed is generally irrelevant, and not something you need to know on a regular basis. :dunno:  Personally, I'd rather be able to determine at a glance whether I'm going "slow", "fast", "way too fast", or "holy crap" just by looking at the angle of a needle.  Not to mention that digital guages don't give a good feeling for rate of change...

Quote from: 500riderJust found this link ... comparison SV650, FZ6, Hornet 599.

http://motorcyclistonline.com/roadtests/7k/

Good link! I agree the Honda 599 is overpriced, but if you will notice, it was right on par or above Suzuki's in most of the categories. And if it weren't for the price - like the article said - it would have won the comparo. Not that THAT really means anything, but it goes to show you it is a solid bike  :thumb:

EDIT: fixed like 100 typos  :o

You can probably get a really nice 599 used for a pretty decent price now. Maybe I'll look in to that.

There's already a GSX600 in the Suzuki lineup:  The Katuna.

The same prefix designation crisis arose back in '83 when   S unveiled the Tempter (4-stroke parallel twin).  An I-4 was already designated the GS650 so the Tempter became the GR650.

can you say ... end of season sale!

I think the end of season sales at the dealer are the way to go.  they seem start at the beginning of September around here.  That still leaves about 2 months of good riding before the real end of the season.

I've seen deals at the local dealer much better than the Autotrader.

For example, I saw several listings for 2003 & 04 Katana's for $7500 in the Autotrader.  The dealer is selling a 2004 for $6000 and a 2005 for $7000.  That's CDN $ mind you!

Maybe they could call it a G600 or GSX600S or something so they don't confuse our simple minds.

BTW the Kan-o-tuna is actually the GSX600F, so GSX600 would be a viable name.
