hi everybody! well i just got my ignition rotor back from bob b, but something strange is happening and i'm hoping u all might be able to help me out.  i've already emailed bob, but i am getting a bit antsy and wanna ride already! i put the rotor back on and put the pin of the advancer into the hole of the rotor.  while wrenching i found that it it difficult to trun at some points, and then turns very easily at others, i don't think that happened before.  so when i started it up, the same thing kinda happened but with the rpms.  they were going up and down and the right side was kinda making some small knocking noises.  i don't know what the problem could be.  in my haynes manual it says to align the timing mark contact on the pulse generator coil.  did i not do this maybe? i don't exactly know where the contact point is ... anyway, i'm sure bob did a great job but being the noob that i am, i just can't get his mod to work yet.  thanks for the help guys!

There is only 1 way to fit that advancer ... you get the locator pin on right If you didn't that's the biggest problem, now you have the thing bolted in well, and OK if you're tuning the screw in the middle of it and the whole motor is turning that will be tight and hard in some spots and just run over at others. RPM's fluctuating ... you need to likely reset the idle ... modding the spark timing does alter idle ...

This sorta bugs me. Did you have any type of threadlocking material on the rotor bolt? If not, it should have gone in easy (like finger turn) and only need some torque at the very end. Did you hold the larger portion of the rotor (shaped like a six-sided nut) with a wrench while applying torque to the smaller hold-in bolt?

It sounds like you only have one rotor. If you had an unmodified one, you could install it to compare.

Still, the installation should have been smooth unless there was thread locking compound on it.  :dunno:

well its just as i expected, my error! i guess i didn't have the hole exactly on the pin, i tried to realign and finally got it.  another thing that scared the crap out of me was that the tire was spinning when i started her up ... it was then i realized i also changed the gearshift lever and was in fact in third gear.  the bike was on centerstand so safety switch was off.  anyway, i just got back from riding and WOW! what a difference! i honestly didn't think it would make so much of a difference but it really does, especially down low.  first gear can now do more than roll you from a stop, she was happily in first at about 30 mph and just under 8000 rpms, whereas before she would be whining to switch gears.  i hope bob doesn't get inundated with too many requests to do this mod, but i for one am stoked! thanks again bob!

8K rpm ... the advancer would have no effect ... under 4K is really what it does ... after that its controlled by the blck box, dwell is what it calculates from the width of the nose ... whihc if trimmed making the bike run full advance at 3500 or so as opposed to 4500 ... after that its no effect ...
