And I bet you've never had biscuts and gravey?

Poor child.

I lived in Rochester, NY for a few years, and the bizarre colloquailism that bothered me was the "Mysterious Omission of the Verb To Be" phenomenon.

Instead of saying: "This fence needs to be painted", people would say: "This fence needs painted."

Sure, you might think we Bostonians talk funny, but at least we have a Guide.

Onlypastrana199

Nope I've had it...corn soup, fried bologna, corn pudding, and biscuits and gravy for some reason it became a huge staple of Mohawk diet..although its more like fry bread and gravy

and Badger..that must be a Western NY thing..don't think I've ever heard anyone do that here...in the *true* upstate

But, the real question is...

Who pronounces the T in often?

lol...I was thinking how wierd that is every time annguyen1981 refers to where he is as "Western MA".  I lived in the Berkshires for a while, which is further west than "Western MA" but is never referred to that way...it's always "The Berkshires" (or "the forgotten lands"), the same way people in Rochester/Buffalo don't refer where they are as "upstate NY".

Onlypastrana199

Its weird how regional names work...like up here we would consider where Rich lives, western ny...and while we are upstate...around where I am is the capital district. When you drive outta the Berkshires u see "welcome to the capital district"

We do.
It is widely regarded that Missourians have the most neutral accent of all the states.  That is why Mizzou has the number one journalism school in the country and high percentage of new anchors come from here.  People from here talk just like the news anchors.

On a side note, my ex-girlfriend is a news anchor.  The other day I saw her show and she mentioned her new boyfriend.  That was nut kick number one.  Nut kick number two was when that same week, the sports talk guy I listen to named her a "home town hottie."

I will now peel the skin from my body!

I always thought that was Michigan. *ducks*

That's funny...  I've always heard it was Washington...  I thought people from Missouri sounded like kicks. :flipoff:

In WA, people pronounce the T in often...  And they call Soda "pop." :dunno_white:

When I first moved here from CA people would ask where I was from and tell me I had an accent...

You've never heard, "Warshington"?
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

In Boston, they are pronounced "of'n" and "tonic".

At one point my accent was so bad that people in other parts of Massachusetts made fun of me.  Since then I've had it beaten out of me...now people don't believe that I am originally from Boston.

It is a frame of reference.  For example, we all know you sound like Will Hunting, but without all the big words.

Around here, we consider ourselves "Central New Yorkers". Downstate is NYC, Long Island, Rockland County, etc. Western NY is Buffalo, Rochester, etc. Upstate is boridering Canada, the Capital District, etc.

When I lived in Ohio (for a year), it would drive me crazy when people would say they are going to "warsh" their clothes. Hah.
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

Oh, you bet I have...  But, that's actually rather rare.  People that saw Warsh the clothes...  Or... "Will you hand me my MAYsuring tape."

It's the old people who's parents came to WA from the mid-west...  I think that's where the POP thing comes from.

Well, I've only heard of those three...  And...  John Goodman totally sounds like a hick...

And...  Who knows how many years of dialect training it took to get rid of that hick accent they all had. :flipoff:

Don't get mad at me 'cause it's true...  Get mad at your hick state.   "Mmmmm You can find may in Saint LouAY."

Don't get me wrong... WA is 80% hick...  Seattle is the exception...  Nearly the entire population of this state live in 3 counties.

But, what can I say?  I'm still a Northern Californian deep down.  I still think Seattle is a quaint little town.
