Ultimate Track Set up?

ok I'm sure opinions will vary greatly on this, but what would the ultimate track set up be for a GS500? Off the top of my head, I am thinking about either Ohlin or Showa suspension (if available), Clip on's, aftermarket pipe, rejetting the carbs, modding the airbox, polish and port the intake, oil cooler and rearsets. Have I missed anything?

......Have I missed anything?

Cams
Oversized pistons (5mm max with stock sleeves)
Flat slide carbs
GSXR forks (at least Katana)
Fox/Ohlins/Penske rear shock
Dual front calipers
EBC HH brake pads
Braided brake lines
Ignition advancer
Lunchbox or pod air filter (if any at all)
Race rubber
Upper fairing
Manual CCT
Non-Oring chain
4-4.5" rear wheel (better choices of sticky tires)
Shim under bucket

Those are just the beginning....

If you want to dig into the motor.....

remove the counter balancer (and rebalance the crank)
total loss ignition
4-valve head

There is plenty more.
Common sense in not very common.

Alright, I've got a few questions. I came across this thread while searching for info on porting and polishing. Basically I wanna know what it is? Is it worth doing on a GS if I'm building a 555cc motor with high lift cams? And has anyone else done it with positive results?
Also, what is a "total loss ignition"? Thanks for the info.

I always thought total loss refered to how 2 cycle (2 stroke) engines burn oil instead of preserving it, how would one go about converting a GS motor to total loss?  :dunno_white:

From http://www.mpsracing.com/products/MSD/ig02n.htm#total%20loss:

QuoteWhat does "Total Loss" mean? The flywheel no longer charges the battery. Usually the flywheel on a total loss system has been replaced with a light weight aluminum flywheel, without the charging magnets. Quicker acceleration is the main advantage of a total loss system since you have lightened the moving mass on the end of the crankshaft. The drawback is that you have to keep an eye on the charge level of the battery - and how often depends on how many times you use the starter (a big drain on the battery) plus how long you are out on the water. Figure about 4 to 6 hours of ride time starting off with a fully charged battery that has a 17 amp-hour rating - depending on how many times you use the starter.

porting and polishing means you increase the size of your intake/exhaust ports and then polish them to a smooth surface.  Better breathing.

Important to know that "poishing" in that term is not buffing fown to a mirror finnish.  It's still a rather rough, matte finnish.  Vapor has a tendency to condense and cling to polished materials.

when porting do you change the size of the valves?

usually...a really mild port job you could probably get away with the same size, but they'd still need to be machined to match the setup.

Similar to polishing, have you ever heard of Extrude Hone?  Interesting process where they run various liquids through various parts of the engine to remove metal burrs and smooth out corners.  Supposedly Extrude honing a whole engine (an expensive endeavour), will add between 5-15% more HP depending on how well the engine was made in the first place.

There is a post in here somewhere to do with high velocity porting which is basically the opposite of porting your head, it makes for some intersting reading.

I ported the head on my car and it made a difference, a bad one, the engine bogged down easier, loss of low end power, haven't actually tried high velocity porting yet but to me it makes more sence than porting.

I can't remember the name of the post, do a search on something along the lines of: "fast intake port anyone?" or something simlar.

Hope this helps.

makenzie71

Porting requires extensive retuning of the rest of your system.  If your car is EFI, it's in need remapping...an S-AFC type device should likely be looked into.  If it's a carb'ed car then retuning and jetting will be in order.  In other words if it worked ok before porting, everything will need to be changed after.

Without trying to high-jacki this thread.....

The car is EFI and is due to be re-mapped and chipped, along with a few other bits and bobs, you are absolutely right makenzie71  :thumb: , the only problem is once re-mapped and chipped i won't be able to tell how much of the performance is down to the porting and how much is down to the mapping/chipping.

The only thing i really wanted to point out with my reply was the high velocity porting.
