My bike turned 11 months old yesterday - manual questions!

And I put my 9,000 th mile on her... Gave her a bath, a wax, re-read my manual and now I have a question or two!

1. Has anyone messed with the suspension - changed it from the preset 4? Any real difference? I feel every little bump sometimes...

2. How the heck do you get the manual to stay under the seat - do you put it under the tool kit or on top? I can't get the dang thing to fit!

3. In the maintenance schedule section it says you have to do all sorts of tightening and changing of various parts, etc. and check things over. How much checking do you think my dealer does when I take it in for an oil change? Would they look at anything like the air filters, or do I have to specifically ask?

Tks guys!

I folded my manual and it put it in a plastic bag and it fits under the tail, near the tool kit.

I don't carry the manual with me anymore. I leave it at home. The manual is so small, i would rather use that space to carry something under the seat.

1: I have changed my suspention settings.  Are you saying that you think 4 is to hard a setting for you?  I wieght between 185 and 195 and I have mine set to 7, I like a firm ride but even at this setting is still feels a little mushy.  It is easy to adjust the rear suspention so tinker and test to get it to where you want.

2: I don't carry the manual with me, i frequent the rain and i am afraid that it would get wet.

3: a good dealer will chenge the filter with the oil change.  if you took it in for an oil change then i doubt that they would check much else besides changing the oil.  If you told them to check things or it was a routine  service check then they should check all things that needed to be according to the manual but i wouldn't hold my breath for a ver thorough check.  Mechanics are lazy and want to make a buck so they might look it over and touch a few things but i wouldn't trust that they checked everything.  Its good practice to check things over yourself and get familiar with you bike.  I mean i don't want anything falling off when i am riding down the road cause whatever may fall off might be something you need.  I like the scense of security I get from knowing that everything is alright myself rather then taking someone elses word on it.

Thanks for the info guys!

Nate, I actually think that 4 is too hard! (Which is wierd) but only occasionally... depends how I'm sitting.

Oh yes!  Quite a bit!  Search suspension with AphaFireX5's username and/or mine.

Some things are not meant to be.

They should check the airfilter, along with changing the oilfilter, checking the cables, tire pressures, but sometimes we (formerly) only do what the customer tells us to do.

I noticed a pretty significant change when I bumped my shock from 4 to 6. Experiment with it though. Go down a notch or two and if it makes it worse or you don't like it, bring it up to 5 or 6. It's pretty easy to change the shock preload, so why not play around with it to find the best setting?

For example, my shock feels way too soft right now since I changed the front suspension. I'm going to bump it up to 7 to see if my issues go away. If not, I'll back down and hope THAT works .
