Well after been on the forum for a few days and reading peoples posts about all your bike trips (which i would love to join in on sadly im on this side of the pond but hey) But im getting the impression that for general riding your going 60-65 in some cases and thats fast. I mean my bike only been 50cc tops out at 60mph but il go flat out anywhere, corners streights anything and here i could do with more speed to get out of sticky situations, unrestricted roads here speed limit is 60 and motorways (highways) are 70. Just seems like your cruise quite slow there in America, things get abit fast here (slow is not neccessarily bad of course, if you go for a ride you wana look around) i was just wondering because from you guys im hearin around 60-80 max and over here you hear more of 60-110 much faster, and cruising on some of the main roads at like 90-100 as an average. Maybe your just all great cruises or you really do take it nice and easy over there.

Speed limits in the US are typically 55 MPH for 2-lane rural roads, 65 MPH for 4+ lane rural highway, and 70 MPH for limited-access rural highway. They vary by state, but not more than 5 MPH in most cases. 

So they're going about 10 over, which is usually not going to get you a ticket.  It's not fast, it's just as fast as you want to go without risking your license.

it really depends where in the US you're talking about... in NJ for example the speed limit on most highways is 65 mph, but noone actually does 65.  I'd say the average cuising speed is more like 80-85.  I've passed state troopers and been radared at over 80 and they don't care, because everyone is going that fast.  During rush hour, when traffic breaks up on smaller 50 mph roads people will do 75.  When I first got my car licence I seriously thought it was normal to do 90-95, as I would do it all the time in a line of other cars. 

In upstate NY on the otherhand, everyone drives sooo slow.  I'll only do 75 on the highway so I don't get a speeding ticket and will pass 95% of the people on the road.

You have to ride slower when you're on the right side of the road... 

Or maybe those English miles are different.

Hehe well on back roads - great twisties speed limit is 60mph because its an unrestricted zone. 60mph on b roads unless otherwise stated, sometimes can be 40 or 50 etc... 30mph through the majority of villages. 20mph in rural streets usually. 70mph on motorways. A roads can be up to 70 also if they are two lane dual carrigeways. Most cars only do 60-65 on the unrestricted roads, usually 40 or 50 on the tight country roads. Bike around here cruise about 80-100 on the wider B roads and A roads, and 60-80 on the tight twisties, LOTS of overtaking of cars goes on.

When I do 75-85 (indicated speed, following traffic) on my local highway, I still get passed frequently.    I'm happiest when I can cruise at about 65-70 in light traffic, but that is rare, since it is so crowded down here!

Traffic here generally moves at 5 - 10 MPH over posted speed limit.

When the Eisenhower expressway was constructed in Illinois it was banked so that at 80 mph you wouldn't have to turn the wheel to turn the corners (according to my HS physics teacher, who was a pretty smart guy) because they thought that the speed limits would be increasing shortly. The limits didn't change, but from what I hear, if you take the road at 80 you barely need to touch the wheel.
