SV650 Swap Questions, plus maybe a few others...

I'm lookin to swap out my rear end, for either the 650, or with the Katana.

From what I hear, the Katana is a straight swap, and the SV650 is nearly a straight swap, but some hole-drilling is involved.

Now, labor aside, which would be the better choice?  Neither has a resevoir, both run the same price, both seem to have the same adjustablity....  I'm at a loss as to which to choose....

Now, I don't think I'm going to get too many real life experiences, because who does both mods?... anyways, anyone with insight?

Thanks,
Nick.

Go with the Katana shock. The SV650 shock is much longer and will raise the tail a lot, changing the rake and trail dramatically. If you drill holes it can change what's known as leverage ratios.

Search using "leverage ratio" and look for a topic I started. There will be a LOT of stuff in there for you to read.

You mean the shock right?  Because, I get the impression you're asking about swingarms.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

oh, I know leverage ratios for sure.... its a pretty easy concept to grasp....

And yes, I am talking about Shocks.

As a side note, I ran across a post mentioning an R6 rear shock?  Is this even feasible?

there is one on EBay that is priced the same as a Katana shock.

Really nice looking one:  Kat Shock

Dammit. Why do I see things like that now? When I have no money? I want I want I want. Unfortunately.. I have to get new forks, bars, and grab rail first. Then new tires to put on my new widened rim! Then I need to learn to not hit stuff.. :laugh?

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

  Oops...

I guess I wasn't thinking that was the one you were looking at...

SRSLY...  Wait until the last 10-5 seconds to bid on it...  And bid HIGH.

I've already lost 2 shocks 'cause I bid at the 30 second mark...  I won the shock I just got for cheap 'cause I bid high with 7 seconds remaining.

It's cold, but it's the only way to win shaZam! on ebay......  Otherwise the multi-bidders will just keep driving the price up and up.  You know the ones...  They bid $2, $4, $4.50, $8, $10, $10.74, $11.92, and on and on until they finally figure out your bid and beat it by 20 cents.

Yea you can swap it with an SV650 ... but its such a flimsily made bike ... you might be disappointed ...
Cool.

I'd say go with Kat shock.  Bolts right in no extra work required.

Damn NGFL how much damage did you do?  Do you only have liability insurance?

Yeah, liability only. $200 a year. Versus $2200 a year for full coverage. I paid $2200 for the bike. Hell, I could buy a new GS every year!

It's not THAT much damage. I still need to take/post pics. But basically, the front forks are trash. The bars are trash. All the controls are still good. The left handle turn signal/headlight assembly is scratched, and the switch is cracked, but everything still works, and is good enough for me for now. The rear grab handle is trash. The rear plastics can probably be fixed with some bondo, zip ties, and spray paint. (Hooray all black tail!) The grab handle is trash though. It bent in, and I'm afraid to take the seat off, I'm fairly certain it bent the subframe where it attaches. Which sucks. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about that. Maybe just not put one back on? I've sent a PM to Jared, waiting for him to get back to me with a price for forks. I've been wanting SM2 bars, so I'm thinking of spending the extra cash for em. I would get Srinath bars, but I can't wait that long to have a rideable bike.

*EDIT*: I also need a new front fender, since I rode the bike home from the wreck, and the bent forks allowed the front fender to rub on the headers. Which means my front fender is about 2 inches shorter than it used to be.

All in all, I got off lightly. It still sucks though. Not sure when I'll actually be able to afford to fix the bike. Tuition was $900 more than I'd budgeted for, then my laptop died, so I had to spend $800 on a laptop, and I hadn't budgeted for that either. So basically, I've paid my tuition, but I have no money to pay for books, fraternity dues, or mealplan. I don't know how I'm going to go to school next semester. I have zero credit, so student loans are more or less out. I don't want to stoop to asking my parents to co-sign. I'm DEFINITELY not going to ask them for a loan. So I'm not sure when I'll be able to actually get the GS going again. Which is depressing, cuz lately I've been under a lot of stress, and a good ride is a GREAT stress reliever.
