I own a 1996 gs500 with 8400 miles on it. I bought it two weeks ago from a private seller. He just had the carbs jetted,timing adjusted. Last night while driving home the engine had major hesitation and died. I went to restart and it was idling very rough. Bike drove for a mile and then hesitation occured and bike died again. At that point it took a while to start again. This problem continued until i finally got it home.

In the morning it started with the choke on and the fuel in the ON position. It warmed up and then died. I switched the fuel position to Prime and it seemed to run fine. What gives. I dont know much about mechanics. Please advise.. Thanks for any help..

By the way the tank is 1/3 to 1/4 full.

How many miles on the tripmeter?

It appears to have that much fuel, but that can be deceiving; it's actually on reserve.  Fill it up.

90 miles on the trip meter. Too little for that much gas to be left in the tank..

But, we don't know if he filled up the tank completely.

Timing is not adjustable on this bike, BTW.

Also, how does the in-tank fuel filter look?  You can see it from the open filler cap, to the left, on the bottom of the tank, it's white.

I meant to say valves adjusted.. Opps.. The filter screen looks white. No obvious junk in it..

i dont no that much but maybe check your spark plugs and see wat color they are

My '92 commuter was happiest when I filled him up every 100 miles. He always looked as if he had plenty of gas, but he didn't act like it!

I have found that hesitation will cause dying, especially on railway crossings. He (or She) who hesitates is lost!

yeah im thinking this may be your problem. I just started getting this problem yesterday, i've had the bike for almost a week now and have ridden 2 days. I also happen to have just about the same amount of gas. My tank has some rust in it that ill be cleaning out soon. So im thinking my prob is the plugs, tank rust or possibly a clogged fuel line.

aye to the above. first top off the tank and change the plugs then see what she runs like. go from there

Thanks for all your help. FYI. I topped the tank off and all is well. Such an easy fix. The bike is happy as a pig in shaZam!..
