just finished por-15'ing my tank

picked up a 91 that had been stored for a few years before this season, had a lot of gunk and varnish in the tank so I decided to clean it.  poured some yamaha carb cleaner, a bit of gas, and some drywall screws in to help scour the tank, and when I emptied everything out (fishing those screws back out was a nightmare) I noticed a fair amount of rust flakes floating around.

I ordered the por-15 cycle tank kit from Vintage Again off of eBay and it showed up yesterday, so I set the evening aside for cleaning/prepping/coating the tank.  I started at 8pm and just now got finished, mostly due to it taking forever for the tank to dry out after the acid etch step, even with hot air blowing through the tank.  If I had it to do over again, I would've just waited until the winter, when I plan on having the tank and plastics painted, and had the tank reconditioned at the same time -- the rust really wasn't that bad.

Biggest pains: fishing drywall screws out of the tank with a magnet (this was my own fault, I'd read about it in one of the "clean your tank" threads a search pulled up and decided it was a good idea ),  spending 10-15 minutes at the end of each step sloshing the last bit of fluid out of the tank and wiping it off of the paint, and waiting 4+ hours for the tank to finish drying out.  Suffice it to say that with that amount of prep and waiting time, plus 4 days for the coating to cure, if this stuff doesn't work as advertised I'll be pretty pissed off.

I have the same kit and will be doing my 90 project soon enough. My leak is at a spot weld on the left side crap pocket. I was tempted to order enough liner to fill the crap pocket level with the tank bottom.

I plan to start one good Saturday morning and devote the entire day to it. Thanks for your input. Take some pics if you can. I plan to document the entire process with photos. Who knows, it may make a good FAQ post?

i por 15'd mine a few months ago.  Damn crap pockets :guns:
I did one step each day till it was done, i believe it was 4 days.  And after the acid etch, if the holes are good sized i would jb weld on the outside as well.  So far have had no problems with tank leaking anymore.

I brought my tank to a local radiator company and they did a professional polymer sealing for 70 dollars.

If you do the job as they instruct you'll be happy with the results.

Yeah  it takes awhile (I always extend the clean/etch times for good measure...) to do all the steps and it can get tedious- but the end result is worth the work....

i paid close to 40 shipped off ebay, so an extra $30 to get it done sounds very cheap to me, id have took it to a shop if that was thir rate.  i was quoted 150 by my local mc mechanic.  an he was gonna do the exact same thing i did.

I tried this ... maybe They may coat it, but I had to remove kreem from the Vulcan tank ... and no one had a Tank dipping trough. That thing they used to boiil out tanks and radiators, evidently its not around anymore. EPA made them get rid of it.

POR instructions .... OK I didn't read it, but I'd never use POR full strength. Etch, clean and dry is ofcourse important. However the etching acid thing cannot quite be re used like they claim ... Or like it etches very very poorly.

I just order a new kit  for every tank... I've never bothered trying to save/re-use the etch etc...

Funny how stuff sometimes actually does what it's supposed to do when you follow the directions....

I wish my local dealer stocked it (POR-15) .

Etch part is fine, I can pre etch with Muriatic acid and follow with this too if I had to. The coating came off in a lump from the patched parts of the tank and hardened into a rock on the bottom ... precisely where it wasn't needed. That is what needed to be thinned I thought. Etching is OK. BTW this coating comming off disaster was on the first run of the etching compound. The second run of the etch made no impression on the metal, so I gave up trying to coat it with POR. Anyway powdercoating is in its near future.
