lol...mostly showing off the new tail cowl and paint.  The new tank is ready...just waiting for the seat.

High enough that it's much higher than stock...waayyyy more ground clearance. But not so high that it'll interfere with my pillion or pegs.

I set it up very tight...very close to the bike.  There's about 1" of clearance between the can and the tire's path of travel...about .5~.75 between the can and the swingarm.

This is my first carbon can...actually it's carbon and kevlar.  I'm not happy with it at all...but for my first casting I think it's suitable.  There's way too many surface irregularities.  I've just got to find a better way to cast tubes.  It's held together with clamps instead of the traditional band and rivet...I hate the band and rivet gettup.  Impossible to get a perfect seal and tear down is always damaging to the bands, the clamps, and the caps.

All I have left to do is build a clamp to hang the can from the pillion peg, and a hanger for when I'm going pegless, and pack the muffler...as it is she's a hollow can.  This is what really causes problems...the can flexes without the packing and it will blow apart if I run it too long.  Gotta get her packed up.

There's also a movie clip here:

I'm having trouble getting sound on it, though...

It's UGLY!!

Sorry, kneejerk reaction. Neat stuff Mak..

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

makenzie71

that's the best kneejerk reaction you can pull?

Kudos to you Mak, but it's something I don't think I'll be buying from you. Keep up the good work  :thumb:

Cool! How did you cast it?  How long did it take you to make it?

Can you tell me why carbon fiber exhausts are so popular?  They do look nice, but what performance advantage to they give?

Thanks,

lol ... i dont think it gets you any where ... its just carbon ..... fiber....... it looks cool .. it cools down faster ...... thats about all i know  about it ....

makenzie71

Carbon fiber has a higher tensile strength than most steels, it's lighter than titanium, it's cheaper to produce than steels, and it's easier to work with in many cases.  The drawbacks to composites are that tehy have no impact resistance and there are very few manufacturers so demand keeps the costs pretty high.

Casting was pretty easy.  I rolled a laminated poster into the propper diamter tube, painted it with resin and rolled my kevlar around it.  I then laminated the entir outside surface to seal it.  The inside surface is absolutely bueatuful...outside surface had nothing to make the surface uniform.

Why not try laying the fiber from the inside

I wanted to...that's how it's done in most cases to get the perfect finnish, but I did have anything to hold the shape.

I used pvc to hold the shape of the tube I made so it would be structurally supportive as I rolled the fiber around it.

Chilly Willy

Would another laminated poster on the outside help smooth out the finish or would the poster stick to the outside of the muffler?

Nah the posters peel off...they're non-porous so the resin doesn't stick...same thing with skrink-wrap.  I used to shrink wrap stuff like this to get the surface I want but I dont have any.

I was thinking about experimenting with it again tonight (don't have much else to do at the office) abd I brought two of those big "employee rights" posters they have posted up in every office in the US.

I also need to build my clamp tonight...I'd like to ride the bike a little...

Chilly Willy

I'd like to ride too, but we're darn near under water up here!

Sigh:  The GS is garaged for the winter--Stabil in the tank, carbs drained, battery pulled and on a trickle charger.  The yellow hornet and I are dreaming of Spring, sunshine, and smooth roads.

I'll never understand you people who "put the bikes up"...I ruin at least one battery and sets of plugs every year trying to start the bike in sub-zero temps so I can ride to work.

+1 theres lots of nice days to ride. why put it away and day dream all day :dunno_white:
we had a high of 70 today  :thumb:

Naaaa high of 64 tomorrow then 50 the next two day's. Nothing a sweater and hot cup of coco wont fix  :thumb:
The question is how will i look riding to my grandmothers with a turkey strapped to my back?

keep working on the exhaust  :thumb: your a lucky bastard... having the time and tools to do your own projects.

rofl...time and tools...I actually have neither.  I'm behind on 3 other projects and I can't get them done because I'm tool-locked.  Thanks to it being a holiday week the 40 grit belts, 5lbs of carbon fiber, and TIG machine I need now won't be here until next week.

tehy have no impact resistance

uhm, from my experiences, which are probably more than yours in regards to composite fabrication (but not sure)

that claim is BS.

Composites can withstand fairly large impacts when the layers are properly engineered/oriented and your resin to fiber ratio is optimal (pre-preg)

and for trying to get a better "OUTSIDE" appearance, try using PVC pipe and vacuum bagging it to the inside diameter... after your model is cured, cut off the PVC pipe.... works fairly well depending on how good you are at vacuum bagging.

In comparison with metals, the impact resistance is nonexistant.  I can hit my 1/8" sidewalled stainless mufflers with a hammer all day long and only bend the metal.  One hit to the carbon (or any composite) and it's toast.  Carbon composites are brittle by nature...there's no way around it.

I was going to get a pump for vac-bagging but I've decided to jump on another TIG machine instead.  I just had a large buy elsewhere and will be working with titanium.
