what should idle speed be set at and how do I do it?

Whats up guys....I am a very new rider and I got my gs a few weeks ago. Ive only posted here a couple times so I am not sure if I started this thread in the right place...but anyways I am having some trouble with my idle speed and low gear and speed with the bike.

When my gs is fully warmed 30min+ it idles at around 900rpms...I know this is low and would like to increase it to around 1200rpm. How do I do this?

Also the reason I want to up my rpm's is because when I am in first and moving through a parking lot at very slow speed the bike is lurchy...doesnt respond well to throttle and jerks alot. When I took my MSF course the bikes they had were no trouble in low speed and low gear manuevres. I just feel like the gs is always stuggling at low speed...Hell I could even have the MSF bike in second going five mph and still have no chugging or jerking. But the gs i have hates it. Is this normal for a gs...are they real finicky in low gear and low speed...or is this just part of the low idle?

Thanks for any suggestions and help in advance.

It is supposed to be set at 1200 RPM.  The idle adjust screw sticks straight down towards the crankcase in between the two carbs.  It has a knurled plastic head about 1/2" n diameter and is easy to see.  Easily accessible, even when sitting on the bike if you know where it is.

I've noticed that too with the low gears on my bike, I have to do a lot of clutch control to stay smooth in the lower gears.

You can adjust your idle by twisting the screw just down under your seat - counter clockwise - higher rpms - clockwise - lower.

So even if I adjust my idle speed its still going to be sluggish and jerky?....Thats not fun...What can I do to get rid of that. I want to be able to do a tight u-turn in first gear with minimal throttle and not have it lurch or sputter.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

This may seem to sound stupid....but how and why whould I do that? What does it do?

I believe you've found the idle screw, but in case you haven't there's a nice picture here courtesy of Kerry. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=11658.0

At low speeds, you will need to feather the clutch. As is true with most bikes, the throttle will be much more sensitive. It is a lot smoother to keep the revs up with the throttle and control your speed by feathering the clutch than to let the clutch all the way out and try to control it with just the throttle. It takes a little practice, but it will soon become second nature.
