Hi, this is my first post so hello to all.

I have recently purchased a '96 GS500E and the urge to modify has become too hard to resist.  I have searched this forum and spent many hours reading the various posts  :thumb:

I don't have much information on the bike and would really appreciate some help and pointers on the following:

1. Rejetting the carbs.  Does anybody know what the Aussie bikes have as standard for jets etc?  Any suggestions on what to do here to improve matters (I already plan to install a k&N filter - very small performance gain plus big positive of no need to replace, just clean)

2. Timing advance - do the Aussie bikes gain from this modification as well - need to make sure I won't break the engine by advancing it too much if our models have different timing.

I also plan on progressive front forks, better rubber most prob BT45, and a flycreen or bikini fairing.

Thanks in advance,
Conrad

Welcome Conrad!

Well, the manual says Aussie bikes have 40 pilots and 120 mains standard, compared to US 37.5 and 122.5 jets.  And timing isn't too bad like it is in California.

So, why not swap the air box for some pod filters and read (search through rejetting topics) what others have done?  The main reason US riders whine about rejetting (other than more power) is that the bikes are set too lean and get cranky.  The advancer works too, just might have to wait a while on Bob's advancer list.

Hehe, I could be wrong after reading way too many posts!  :)

Congrats on the bike!  :thumb:   And, welcome to the board.

I'm not sure on the stock jets for a Aussi bike.

Regarding the timing:  The 17 degree advancer is a big plus for the low end.

Others will jump in here with some more answers I'm sure.

I don't know 'bout jetting your bike, but welcome to the board!
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Thanks for the info Turkina.  So from the posts I have read - am I correct in assuming that I should do the following for a Stage 1 upgrade:
1. Fit V&H airfilter in stock box
2. Replace 120 jets with 125 jets
3. Install 1 #4 washer for the needle

I have contacted Bob and he is very kindly offered to help me out - luckily I have a mate with the right tools to machine the original rotor.

Cheers

As for my bike, I'm pretty sure it's jetted (it even smells rich sometimes!) but I bought it that way without knowing and don't want to poke around with the jets just yet.

Anyways, I think if you are going to jet, get the uni or K&N pod filters, and swap out the airbox.  More power that way!  But... you will need to mess around with jets, maybe move to 140? mains with a stock exhaust.  Just changing your airbox filter to a better one will put you in the 125-127.5 range.

Jets aren't terribly expensive, I gather... might want to get few sets... a size above and below what you think you may need (ask Srinath)  Make sure pilot jets are non-bleeder types... bleeders are too rich.  Then need to set washer right and mixture screw (remove brass plug, all in, then 3 turns out, adjust)

Like i know what I'm talking about! (see above)
