Airbox: A Funny Tale

Just read on, and have a laugh...

I picked up my new-to-me '01 GS 500 1 1/2 month ago, nice, well-kept, and after a few first days of cautious use (it's my first bike, after all) I decide it's time to try and rev it up; to my dismay, it won't rev past 8k-9k, while running/idling fine below that limit.
I think "Ok, no panic, it's under 1-year warranty anyway, I'll have a go to the dealer's" and so I do, I explain my issue to the mechanic service guy, very friendly indeed, he goes off for a test ride, comes back and emits his verdict, "Airbox is too open, probably the previous owner messed it up for an aftermarket exhaust he had or so; I'll fix it up in no time".
And he fixes it; he put a plastic piece that partially closes the air intake, he tries it, I go for a ride, and say "Hey, NOW it's ok!! :)" Lil' blue GS goes very fine indeed, good acceleration, unfortunately I haven't thoroughly tested top speed so far. But that's not so important. Now.

And here comes the funny part of the tale.

I obtain a copy of the Haynes manual, I join this forum, and have a deeper look at the instruction manual.(Ok, I know, no flaming me please, should've done that before)

I come across the pages describing the airbox/air filtering element, see the pics, and think "Well, seems a little different from what I have actually. I'll go and have a look under the seat."

I reach my bike, flash a light on the airbox.
"Why can I actually SEE the carbs intake???? And what's more, where's the air fil........"
:o :o :o :o :o

Long story short, my bike was delivered to me WITHOUT ANY AIR FILTERING ELEMENT.

:o :o :o :o :o

Luckily I'd been riding along in no dusty roads/environment at all...
I promptly went back to the dealer and told them it all, the guys (apparently) admitted their lack of attention, the sales assistant told me "I'm ordering the filter and cover now, come back next Wednesday, probably they'll be here by then and we'll mount'em on your bike :thumb:"

When you're done laughing (at me p00r n00b, too),do you think I did damage the engine (roughly 1800 kms/1100 miles since it all began) in any way? Should I NOT ride it AT ALL until it has been fixed?

Homer J Simpson's light is shining on me...D'OH!!!

I'm sure the moral of this story is....

the bike wanted an K&N lunchbox  :thumb:

at least she could've explained it to me better...
Apart from kidding,I'm starting to think that the PO had an aftermarket filter indeed, but took it away upon trading the bike in.And left that huge black hole in the 'box. :nono: :nono: :nono:

Luckily the weather here is very bad these days and I'm working all weekend, so I have few riding opportunities...

Oh well, I've always thought that the GS was a funny ride from the very first km, even with messed up air intake; anyway I'd had that feeling of "hmm...I'm not pretty convinced about something"...and so it all began. :icon_mrgreen:

See ya soon!

Whenever I hear someone say their GS is not a lot of fun to ride, I tend to guess that something's wrong with it...

Missing air filter?  Who'd a thunk it?
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?
