What to do about a cracked fairing?????

Well, I took the bike in to get a valve adjustment and a few things were wrong with it.  I'm no mechanic when it comes to carbs so usually unless it involves taking the entire assembly off and putting it back on I'll have someone do it for me.  This time I had someone adjust the valves and supposedly clean the carbs.  The guys at the bike shop ended up taking two weeks and a pissed off employee that was getting fired ended up throwing something and it cracked part of my fairing on a 91 gs500e seat plastics.  Where would I begin to find the left hand side fairing only???  I need red preferably and it should be totally straight.  Should I be looking at anything aftermarket that would give it a custom look, or should I just buy a stock piece and paint the whole bike???  Any info would be great.

It'd probably be cheaper to just replace (via ebay or our own for sale forum)  and repaint that one side to match your bike.  This place carries factory matched paint: http://www.colorrite.com/

You can find out exactly what color your bike is here: http://www.gstwin.com/gs_colors.htm

I sure hope the place you got you work done at is paying for the fairing.    LIke said above, I would imagine getting another  set of plastics and painting them would be the fastest way to go.

I plastic welded and repainted my fender after I laid the bike down.  I  can't remember the name of the product I used (I'm at work right now) but I will post the name of it once I get home.

I bought it at my local motorcycle shop for $20, and its amazing.  Its some sort of powder and acetone that when combined via a pipet make an awesome bond with the ABS plastic.  The only tip I can provide is to be careful when taping the front side of the fairing as the acetone will eat the plastic if your not careful.

But if your tail plastics got cracked while the bike was being worked on at the dealer ship, that sounds to me like something they should fix, as it was their employee that threw the wrench.

Hope this helps, Rylon

I join others and say that once the shop takes on a job on your bike , it's under their care and responsibility , in many shops mechanic would go over the whole
bike in your presence  to record damage to fairings\paint before work has begun ,so that you can't latter blame them for it.

Yep every dealer I have ever been to for work ( two different ones ) walked the bike with me writing down any type of dmg they could see.

Is the shop paying for this?  or reimbursing you somehow?

Ebay is probally your best bet.

Is this the part your looking for? http://www.crotchrocket.com/fiche_section_detail.asp

thanks for all the suggestions and man you guys get up early or stay up late.  What we worked out was he did $377 worth of work and only charged me 177 for everything.  It needed a bit of custom work to the stupid california carb and so he basically gave me 200 for the screw up of the employee.  He offered to take care of it all or I could just take it as is and we'd talk about price, so thats what we worked out.  I figured I actually came out ahead of the deal a little bit.  Now to find a tail piece.....

Since you already received $200 in the form of a discount, I would try an internet search on plastic repair products. there are plenty of things out there. Either plastic welding or something epoxy based will probably be your best bet. Other than that, eBay is probably your best bet, whether it's a direct replacement or an aftermarket part. Also call around to area boneyards, you may find a part there off a totaled bike.

Sorry for the long wait, but I've been busy getting the house ready for the GF's parents.

The stuff I used it called Plastex (www.plastex.net)  I bought the $20 kit from my local shop.

The write up and instructions aren't the greatest, but I would be willing to try and iron out any of the details you find a lil' fuzzy.

Oh, and I can't remember what year they changed the plastics, but I have two of the old style sets sitting out in the garage, let me know if I can help.

As for the plastics that you have, are you willing to part with any of them and are they red by chance???  I have a 1991 and it would be sweet to have an extra set if I could fix these and buy another???  PM me if you are interested or just email me @ caseyallen1@gmail.com
