some of you know, i was involved in an accident last week. I'm wondering if there's any engine damage. the bike went down on the right side, but continued running. handlebar damage caused the throttle to stick open, and the bike revved up spewing black smoke (right cylinder way rich?). my question is: where is the oil pickup, and can such a situation cause any engine damage?

Black smoke would mean to me too much fuel.  IIRC, the oil pickup is to the right side of the engine.  About how long did it run til it died?  My guess is that you're engine is fine though.  Unless someone else knows something I don't, I'd try to start it up

well, things were in kind of slo-mo. I'd guess 5-10 seconds.

If it's toast, it doesn't matter, go on and crank it.

If it isn't toast, it doesn't matter either, so crank it.

you probably were just floating valves really bad if it pegged the throttle wide open.  I doubt that its toast, but if it happens to be get a lot of beer and some butter

Isn't there a rev limiter in the ignition controller?  As far as the smoke, it was either from running rich due to the float bowls flooding out or oil got into the cylinder (probably a combo of both).  I wouldn't worry about this.  BTW, running w/o oil for 5-10 sec is unlikely to cause damage anyway due to residual oil in the system.
