Hey everybody, Just picked up a 2000 GS500E.. for the wife to learn on...I'm looking to do a few things to it...first were can i find frame sliders or maybe crash bars just in case she drops it..then exhaust, jetkit, air filter,... would be next....thanx, glen

e-bay or www.alpha-sports.com  sliders are over rated.  case guard/engine guards are good.  since it is an e model you don't have much plastic to protect.  how about some pics of the new bike?  oh and welcome to the board

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new bike! 

I have installed the case guards mentioned in this thread: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=32714.0

I had a minor problem with hole alignment, but nobody else seemed to have this issue. Anyways, I sorted it out and the guards seem to work really well ("seem" because fortunately I haven't crash tested them yet). Their customer service was pretty good too; they provided me with torque settings for the nylon nuts they use (it is much less than the stock torque setting, but I can't remember it off the top of my head).

Welcome The bike looks great, there are many sources available here and through online vendors. I have order a bunch of stuff from Bike Bandit mainly because they are in CA, close to where I live. Once again welcome to the forum.

If you have fairings then you dont have much choice but to go with sliders, there not really over rated their jsut there. but since the OP has a naked bike then yes case guard is the way to go

I believe it's a 1998 model in immaculate condition.

Was curious are there any sliders available for the "F"?  After the inconvnient knock over by my neighbor I'm looking for a litle extra fairing protection without too much drilling and such.

Nope, it looks just like [the 2000 model that I flew to Arizona for].  The first big set of changes happened in 2001.

NO it's a 2000 model...bought from the original owner..title says 2000......the model says GS500EY on the paperwork...does this mean anything? whats with the .."Y"...in the model number? glen

The "suffix letter" distinguishes between the different production years for a given model.  See the first column on my [Parts Fiches] page for the letters that go with a given model.

Also, a GStwin search for "suffix letter" will cough up a few more details.  In particular, the fact that the same suffix used across the Suzuki line for a given year.

Oh, and here's [one more tidbit] from an older Haynes manual.

Don't get stock (black) mirrors! Yours are from a 2nd gen SV650, which are bigger and convex; this makes the viewing angle much-improved! 

Although if you really want the stockers, I'm sure someone will trade. Post it in the "For Sale" section.

Nice mirrors, and very nice ride overall. Seems in mint condition.
BTW, mirrors' thread is 10 mm, both right-handed. Any 10 mm RH will do the job, just today I ditched my old ones (chromed round, came stock with '01+ bikes) for a pair of street legal Kawasakis. Sleeker, better vision field and no more vibrations.

Berto, I think those mirrors are stock...    I have the same on my particualr 2001, the SVs I've seen all have a short straight base that the stalk then angles sharply right up out of. These on the bike look just like mine which just have a curve from the base up. Black rubber sleeves are in the same place too. I'm pretty sure mine aren't SV mirrors, and they definitely fog up. They have excellent rear coverage however, I put some black Napoleons on that were shorter and looked GREAT, but no matter what I did all I could see was my elbows. Having to pull my elbows in tight inside my big armored jacket was a fussy habit I didn't want to have to learn, so I put the stock mirrors back on. So that's something to consider. I personally really prefer black mirrors though as they seem to make a bike look cleaner to me, since they sort of disappear visually.
They sure look nicer than the round mirrors though!

PS: Look at Domindart's bike in the gallery, it's the same as mine, pre fenderectomy and I (ahem) seem to have lost all my reflectors...
